HOW TO: BUILD A ROTJ LIGHTSABER TUTORIAL DIY from hardware store parts and minimal tools!!

  • My first DIY Tutorial. This DIY is not perfect by any means. There is lost sections of footage, so the ending may be slightly disjointed. Also, the reason why the footage had a mixture of full screen and mobile, is because my camera man was a 9 year old boy LOL. My son did a great job, he just held the camera the wrong way at times. I just wanted to get this uploaded and out to you all as quick as I could.
    I'm sorry I didn't have a better parts list in this description. I had every intention too but I lost my list in the end, rushed to finish the video and...there you have it. But, I can tell you that the main pipe is 1 1/4". They typically sell 1 1/4 or 1 1/2". I think the 1 1/2 is too thick. If you have big hands you could try that but that will change everything else. The wooden dowel in the middle, I believe is 3/4". The PVC you can just take your 1 1/4" sink pipe and see which size it slides over the best. The washers in the "grenade" section are M18. The grommets are 3/4. I hope that helps a little. On my next video, I will make a better effort to have all of the parts and measurements. Thank you.

    So this is the deleted scene of Luke making his lightsaber that everyone's talking about?

    I’d really love having a project list, I am wanting to build this I just need a list of materials, and a little clarification on how to do the emitter...

    This is honestly the best tutorial for a Luke ROTJ lightsaber that I’ve seen! Nice job man! I’ve been waiting for this tutorial and I’m so glad you posted it. I need to make myself one of these now haha

      Cameron W Vlogs Thank you very much. I'm glad you like it. I'm very critical on myself. I actually had more planned but people had waited awhile for this. I knew I would run out of free time after Monday so I threw together all the footage I had left.

      Samurai Saberz I think it looks great! I understand being critical on yourself though. I do it all the time on things I work on but I wouldn’t worry about it. This is exactly what I’ve been looking for and you are the only person who has done a great version of this. Keep up the nice work! And thanks again :)

      That is my actual goal of these videos. I plan on doing Home DIYs that real people can do with minimal tools. I'm thinking of doing the Praetor hilt next from Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy.

      P.S. if you like this video, please share this out into the social media world. I like trying to help people do these type of things without having to build them out of paper and foam.

    A nice little cheap tool that would help you no end, is a set of vernea callipers.. Great for super accurate measuring and marking out. In Australia (where I am) you can pick up an okay calliper for $20. Which are fine for the home diy'er like yourself........ I'm really enjoying these builds. Can't thank you enough for going to the effort of filming your projects like this.

    For the emitter I used(Arranged from smallest piece to largest) 3/4 inch copper coupler, 1 inch pvc, a 1 inch PVC coupler, and a steel washer that's 2 inches in diameter. It was very simple to put together. 1) I cut a 1 1/4 inch piece of the 1 inch PVC pipe
    2) then cut a 1/2 inch piece of the 1 inch coupler then slid it over the piece cut in the previous step and glued them together
    3) I then glued the 2 inch steel washer to the top
    4) put the 3/4 inch copper coupler in the bottom of the emitter.
    All of it fit together pretty easily and turned out looking pretty good

      Oh for sure. I realized I made the clamp a little too long when i got towards the end. If I was to remake this, which I probably will, I will change up a few dimensions. Thank you.

    I love the way the grommets and washers look in the grip. Seeing all the parts, I didn't expect that to be how they'd be used (although looking back, how else _could_ they have been used?). All in all, it looks fantastic and seems real easy and cheap to do.

    Great video and great job on the saber.Finally someone shows how to make a cool ROTJ saber without having a full,expensive machine shop.I gotta thank you for this video with all my heart .There are other saber making videos but they all have full machine shops and expensive equipment,etc.You just showed how with a few hand tools,spray paint and things you have around the house.Your a great dad as well,could hear your son laughing in the background.I make props my self without the machine shops and i use spray paint.im doin pretty good so far.No replicas,but i have made some weird blasters and steampunk sabers,etc.I feel vindicated now knowing im not the only one who has to make stuff using what i can get with not big bucks and equipment".May the Force Be With You" Samurai Saberz.

    The "movie prop" / "movie version" hilt you're referring to is called the "V2". That's the one that has the cone knob and a square metal chunk near the bottom just above the pommel. There is no copper on the V2 hilt. The middle section is just a regular Graflex clamp from the Skywalker Graflex flash-gun hilts. They replaced the graflex clamp lever on the V2 with a much longer chrome lever, and the super thin part of the neck just below the emitter is wrapped in some black Mylar tape to keep it from spinning, so that section is black, as is the section between the pommel and Graflex clamp. Though a lot of the black paint scraped off over time so when you see it in R.O.T.J. (specifically the moment Luke catches it after R2 launches it to him on Jabba's barge) You can see it clear as day. Has a VERY different circuit card as opposed to the straight black and copper lines. On the side of the V2's pommel there's a hole through one of the six pueces metal bits that stick out which has a D-Ring attached to it so Luke can hang it from his belt (just like Luke's various Graflex hilts from 4 & 5) the D-Ring is off-center to the left of the Graflex clamp's circuit card. (which would be considered the center of the hilt if it was symmetrical) The V2 is extremely asymmetrical. What you're attempting to replicate here is the "Hero" version, only seen in ROTJ once? Maybe twice. There's a nice close-up of the "Hero" hilt while Luke is in restraints and Vader is holding it. He checks it out and says "I see you've constructed a new Lightsaber." Aside from that, whenever you actually see Luke holding or using his Lightsaber in ROTJ it's the V2. As well as in the throne room when Palpatine has it sitting on the arm of his throne, whenever it pans over to it that's also the V2. There is a "V3" used in the film that's extremely similar to the V2 but it's barely used/noticeable in the film. The V2 is my favourite saber hilt in all of Star Wars. I spent several years building a 100% film accurate version of it and it's absolutely perfect. Well done with this DIY "ROTJ Hero" hilt. Not bad at all. If I were you I'd keep it all symmetrical and clean. Just chrome black and copper. If you're gonna start adding aspects from the V2 then then just DIY you another hilt and Google "ROTJ V2 Hilt Schematics". There you'll find every tiny detail of the original V2 used in the film. -

    I’d really like to make this with my father, as your son did with you, but I’m confused by the emitter when it jumped and it was already done, any tips for it?
    Also, I’m trying to think of a way to attach a blade with lights. I’m not worried for sound as my phone can be in my pocket.
    Any ideas?

    • @eplision_7709
      @eplision_7709 6 років тому +3

      Hmm, that complicates things. If you really wanted to add lights, you would need to add button on the outside of the hilt that completes the circuit of a battery pack thats connected to a LED on the top. That would be harder for DIYers because the Archon (ROTJ Luke’s lightsaber) has a small emitter and a very thin frame near the top, which might snap because normal saber blades are pretty heavy. If you do find a way to add the LED, you could go buy a blade from www.ultrasabers.com for 10 bucks or so. Although, in total, with the lightsaber hilt costing about $40, blade being $10, and electronics being $25-40, I’d rather just get a Mystery box saber (also from ultrasabers.com) for $75. They come with a random style hilt, and could come with sound or not, and the saber you receive is guaranteed to be worth over $75. Anyways, merry Christmas, and may the force be with you.

    Samurai sabers , what I think you should do to make the blade for this Lightsaber is get a longer dowel and rap green reflective tape around above the hilt and if you ture the flash on you're camera you'll get the Lightsaber effect.

  • @GarrettFinnell
    @GarrettFinnell 6 років тому +6

    Great design. This is way better than many DIY designs I've seen.
    How much would you say all of the parts cost you total? I'm weighing making one VS. buying a cheap 3D printed prop replica.

    • @SamuraiSaberz
      @SamuraiSaberz  6 років тому +4

      First of all, thank you for kind words. Second, the cost can vary depending if you have to buy tools. Sometimes, if you have the tools already, the cost may be higher initially, because some materials you buy will last for multiple builds. Most sabers cost about 20 to 30 to build on average. I will say that, in my opinion, crafting one from scratch is very satisfying versus just buying one. It's a test of your Jedi skill lol

    I really like Luke's saber but I hate how the choke is so fat in most of the "replicas". Like the TLJ saber has a really thick neck to fit the blade in it, I think it ruins the look of the saber.
