Killing Joke - (1985) - Love Like Blood

- Artist: Killing Joke
Album: Night Time
Release Date: 1985
Label: EG Records
Marking the full return from the band's out-of-nowhere hiatus in 1982, Night Time, following after a couple of test-the-waters EPs, finds the reconstituted Killing Joke, with Paul Raven in on bass but otherwise unchanged, caught between their earlier aggression and a calmer, more immediately accessible approach. This turned out to be the band's Achilles heel in the end, with later albums in the '80s evidence that the group had turned into an unbelievably boring, generic modern rock band. At this point, however, the tension between the two sides had a perfect balance, and as a result Night Time is arguably the quartet's freshest album since its debut, with a warm, anthemic quality now supplementing the blasting, driving approach that made the band's name, as songs like "Kings and Queens" demonstrate. Geordie Walker pulls off some jaw-dropping solos amid his fierce riffs -- check out his turns on the title track -- while Paul Ferguson mixes and matches electronic beats with his own very well (perhaps a little less intensely than before, but not by much). Jaz Coleman's experimentation with keyboards -- chopped-up vocal samples, calmer and sweet lead melodies -- is paralleled by his own singing, now mostly free of the treatments and echoes familiar from earlier days. He's got a great singing voice as it stands, and it's a treat to hear him let it flow forth without forcing it. "Eighties" turned out to be the retrospectively most well-known song, due to a surprising and not always remembered example of Killing Joke's influence -- Nirvana, of all groups, thoroughly cloned the watery guitar line at the heart of the track for "Come as You Are." "Love Like Blood" was the breakthrough single in the U.K., although -- and for good reason -- it managed the bizarre trick of slotting alongside Duran Duran for mainstream radio airplay while still sounding like nobody other than Killing Joke. A pity the group then spent some years doing pallid clones of the song.
geordie's guitar tone is to die for, cold, massive, clear, and sharp
Cold? But it's massive and resonant as hell
RIP, Geordie 😞
Killing Joke, one of the greatest rock bands in history, yet unfairly unrated.
They pissed off the militarist overlords in America, and paid the price for it. They had some some graphics with pictures of priests and nazis hanging out together, meant as an anti-fascism graphic, but easily could be turned against the band by people who wanted to. The American media is garbage in what it annoints as important music history.
Absolutely- so talented, maybe just that they came along in such a musically commercial decade?
Hello Anathemaniel from a decade beyond. I agree w/ R. Mclochness...always wondered if their band name was a Monty Python thing.
"THE" greatest rock band in history. (fixed).
So amazing how these guys enter the song, one by one - a guitar sharp as a razorblade, a drum like a machine gun, a bass like a tennis ball and a voice like an angelic herald of the end times.
G. Keddatz. Them brits sure can make great music.
You forgot the synths like a wet dream
@@TheAnalPunisher gross analogy
Yes amazing,
magic
@@Robobotic the haunting sound of the synths makes this song legendary
Still a as haunting as it was 30 some years ago. R. I. P. Paul Raven, fine bass player.
Respect
One of the greatest guitar riffs ever... Like a cross between Tony Iommi and the Edge. Sends a shiver down my spine in the best way possible.
Bass
35 years later & still give a me goosebumps.
DAT BASS... holy fuck I love discovering older shit that sounds so good
I just discovered this song not that long ago....LOVE IT!!!!!
All, drums, guitar, voice, synths, all sound timeless ..
just found it yesterday, can’t stop playing it
Motel Crue must have loved this song too.
@@kimchi2780 He he he .... yeah, now that you mention it. I know what you did there... 😆
Omg i never heard of this band before and i absolutely love them! How did i miss them i grew up in the 80s! Its never too late❤
Yeah same here, my cousin put me on. I grew up in 80s and loved the music, but never heard of them.
Word I just found out about them through the Metallica cover from Gargage days revisited! This band goes hard. A gnarly blend of pop rock/thrash. Ethereal in sound.
No radio play ...🖤🖤🖤
My friend, Martin played drums with them during this time. He also played with P.i.L., Ministry, NIN, and Pigface. He's a damn cool cat!
You Know Martin Atkins?!
My_Name_Is_Darc yes. I gladly call him a friend for about 5 or 6 years now.
Hi fried;)
Be sure to give Martin a huge thank-you from Canada. Killing Joke was a huge part of Vancouver's alternative army in the 80's and, for kids like myself, it meant everything.
This is still one of the very best tracks ever recorded in the genre.
Thank you, thank you.
Give him my regards.
I saw Martin Atkins play drums with Flipper on songs like Sacrifice and Sex Bomb. That show was a ton of fun.
One of the best songs ever !
The arrangement of the song musically is perfect , the way the drums hook in with the bass line is pure genius!
I remember recording this from the radio in the 80s + playing + rewinding the first 30 seconds until the tape snapped !
Absolutely blinding timeless piece of music.
I was an 80s child....I had this on vinyl.
Me too!
Me too Claudia. I know a Carlos Bermudez in Michigan. Any relation?
I still have this on 12" ;)
wow...evan befor cd.....you looky girl

What a gem. I was doing my military service in that year. What memories. Right now I want to cry 😢 and go back to the 80's
Fucking hell this song is good
+djs909 too fucking right
God I loved the 80s! So many brilliant bands!
One of the best songs I've ever heard. How has this work of genius been hidden from me for all these years?
Try .oo,ing fool .
because commercial music radio sux
Near the end at 6:11 when all the instruments drop except for the drums and keyboards, absolute genius musical perfection few have ever been so fortunate to accomplish. Swirling, wonderful, and breathtaking.
It is, the dark atmosphere is beautiful. And you can hear the bass drum add to the punchiness of that bass line
so powerful...., one of the most underrated bands in the 80s.
that bass coming in… my god.
1 of the most beautiful songs ive ever heard
One of the best bass riffs ever !!
One of my favourite songs ever! 🚀
Memories of blasting this out of my halls of residence 1985! there was still hope then.
"Strength and beauty destined to decay so cut the rose in full bloom", Very trippy lyrics.
Bass, beat, synths, voice, guitar tone...everything perfect
wow im blown away. one of the best songs ive ever heard.

Recently discovered this song and now I'm obsessed!
I swear dude it was only a year and a half ago that this song video only had like 300,000 views. I bet a lot of young people discovered this song.
the album that followed this is also very good (brighter than a thousand suns)
Youngsters realized their generation music sucks
Fuckin' great song ! Real people, real instruments.
This song epitomizes everything great about 80s music. The first time I ever listened to these guys, my first thought was, "I bet Trent Reznor loves this band." because I can hear their influence heavily, especially in his early music. I didn't get into them until my mid 20s, and I'm so glad I've found them. Killing Joke has become one of my favorite bands.
Glitch Xero I didn’t discover them until my 40s. Wish I had discovered them when I was younger. They are now my favorite band.
fair play about the killing joke song, one of the best of all time, erm unbeatable, even. The 80s music, though I gotta say musically, was quite miserable, generally, like punk was a fading memory (NOT! most great punk bands were still on it, too many to mention one). One thing I will say about Joke was they were a huge 'part of it' and individually, and collectively, were responsible for taking it (punk) to another level. Therefore, among quite old punks we love our KJ, this is one of their all-time best, almost as good as Pssyche(1980 b-side) Mwuahh love all you Jokers...
I know this song before i heard Nine inch nails. And i wonder where you hear this in his early music. Pretty hate machine? Broken? I like both btw, NIN and KJ.
Weird Science the movie got me into them "Eighties"
loved em ......still do on every lets party occation.
We must play our lives like soldiers in the field
But life is short i'm running faster all the time
Strength and beauty destined to decay
So cut the rose in full bloom
'til the fearless come and the act is done
A love like blood, a love like blood
Everyday through all frustration and despair
Love and hate fight with burning hearts
'til legends live and man is god again
(and self-preservation rules the day no more)
We must dream of promised lands and fields
That never fade in season
As we move towards no end we learn to die
Red tears are shed on grey
I just love this song... I love a lot of music! Echo & The Bunnymen kicked ass too... love so much of their music!!
I always heard it as "a love like flowers, a love like blood." Wow was I wrong.
@@kevlonk You're not alone. I used to think that the chorus was, "Till the big man turned, and he had to turn. A love like blood......! Hahaha!
Quality
Shades of Mishima and Nietzsche... .
All time classic.
Blew me away when I first heard this over 30 years ago. Quality muso's, tight knit sound & still as good from those years ago.
Great band Killing Joke.
This actually made it into grocery stores and airports in Europe. In the USA, it was stuck permanently underground minus some alternative radio stations. Of course, college radio played it. I played this for people endlessly at the time. Many people dug it, mostly dudes. Chicks not as much, it depended. I'm not sure if the Love Like Blood video even aired much. The flag waving was seen as vaguely communist and MTV was NOT a progressive network in any way shape or form. They had a Sunday night program called 120 minutes which ran 'underground' music and this would have been shown there. The video for Eighties got the biggest rotation, but still not that much. Remember, Metallica, of all bands, got hardly any MTV rotation until Enter Sandman. College radio played this, not much else. There were ZERO alternative FM stations until grunge hit, and this predated grunge by 5 years.
Drumming like a machine, but NOT a machine. Quite the difference. Jaz wrote some damn adult lyrics, he is undercredited on the lyrical side of the equation.
1985 man i was just born of the month of June. Still a great song 💆💆💆💆💆💆😷😷😷😷😵😵😵😮😮😕😕😕😧😧😐😐😬😬😬🙈🙈😶😶😑😑😑😑
amazing bassline by paul raven!!!!! RIP
perfect bass line , piece of art
The genius that was Raven!
It comes from the basemeeeents of: heeeelllll
Yes ever piece of art
mauro lopesmarziano i love this bass sound so much!! i feel so good ever!!!
Is it just me or does it seem like Paul got the least attention. In reviews nobody really mentions him and even music videos they only show him for a couple seconds. That sucks because he played a major part in the band. His bass lines are fucking bad ass. Maybe I'm just crazy, but its bullshit to go unnoticed. RIP Paul
Bought this when it came out. The huge reverbed guitar sound is so totally epic, the low grand piano and guitar in the breakdown mix awesomely, the chunky rhythm and thudding bass tone is perfect, the gated snare sound is definitive and the altered harmonies in the synth pads are mind-blowing. Killing Joke were the total dogs bollox at this time... Love it !
80s we’re living in there 80s … unbelievable tune … memories of this as a kid . The tube channel 4 live
Great rock song. Brilliant singing, lyrics, bass, keyboards, guitars and drums. Perfect.
i love this bassline
This song is AWESOME! I haven't heard it in 20 years and it still blows me away!
ending of this song is a pure masterpiece ...one by one lights are goin' down...
+John Stromboly THIS.

***** tnx I did'nt know that
Omg this brilliant song is almost 34 years!! I was young, 22 yrs. Love From Paris France 🗼 💕
It has aged very well.
Heard this band for the first time a week ago and can’t get enough. I’m a classic rock fan so why haven’t I ever heard of them before?!
Maybe because they're from the UK and the British post-punk and goth scenes weren't very popular in America. Strangely this band went into a more heavy metal direction in the 90's and fell off the map somehow. Very strange band... I like them.
They play this record very often on Dutch radio
Ik me too! Just hearing for the first time now!! Love it!
I just recently learned about them too as having grown up in the southeast USA I never once heard them on the radio. Thank God for apps like iheart and Jango or I would have never discovered them. Great music!
Los Angeles, 80"s, music, beach. WISH I WERE 19 AGAIN!!!
I love his voice. So unusual and emotional. Truly addicted to this song!
His voice is dark and youthful all at once. A Paradox like the man himself.
Seedy club nights of my youth brought back to life, floor full of dancing weirdo's.
+Mick Hurst Hey I resemble that remark.
I was probably one of those weirdos
Yeah I was shambling through the haze of cigarettes clutching my bourbon & coke amongst the swirling nightclub lights.🧟♂️
TAKE ME BACK
I fucking miss the bat cave, lemme tell ya.
Bonne époque Bell chanson o moin des musiciens des vrais bravo
Les années 80 ,,, c'était quand même les meilleurs années pour la musique au point de vue de la variété, et ce morceau ...que du plaisir. Merci à tous ces groupes de légende.
Wow...... I miss the 80s music
I'm livin in the 80's...still in 2019
Yep as I say u got a good song in the 80s it was great u got a bad 1 & it was truly awful
I was in the Navy over in the far east in the 80's This is the kind of music that kept me grounded to America
All in all, and in my humble opinion, and having lived in Kreuzberg in the early 1980's nothing but nothing evokes memories and feelings quite like this, perhaps the greatest song ever written. Love Q.
Great music, great times, great artists
John Green yes great time never back into the modern world;(((((((
Brilliant ! Captures the mood of the eighties!
Thank you for taking me back to my youth...i still love this track just as much now..brilliant!
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Memories!!!!!!!!Love it
Boys take a bow.....class tune from a class album.....you can die happy.

Real Band Music, Brilliant...
Bought the 12" as soon as I heard this one FANTASTIC TRACK still is!!!
This was the song to get me into killing joke. So good
I heard this on a radio in the local handy home shop and couldn't get it out of my head. Even when I went to sleep, just before I fell asleep it crept into my head again. So I had to look up the playlists of three radio stations online. (knew about what time it was played). That voice + melody...
Glad I found it.
Damn, I wish I had a local radio station that played things like this!
I heard this epic song on Planet Rock the other day . Great Radio Station 😊
This was the killing joke most famous song in italy, in the 80 years, for the italians follower of altrnative or indie music like punk rock, punk hardcore, new wave, gotic, heavy metal, a lot good songs in that years
One of the darkest most beautiful tracks ever....but only ever the long version not the short. Becomes a monster after the lyrics finish luckily this is the long version and it still rocks 35 years later .
master piece
Yes yes yes!
One of the best punk bands of the 80's along with dead Kennedys, very underrated!
No and no. They are not punk or even underrated
Absolutely gorgeous song
Dieser Song ist meiner Meinung nach seiner Zeit um Jahrzehnte voraus, denn er könnte durchaus auch ein aktueller sein.
Absolut gei... Sound!
Danke auf alle Fälle, für das hochladen dieses Titels!
rock this at least once a week.
Still love it so much, keeps me young
Geiles Lied, zwar schon ewig alt aber immer noch super, früher in den 80ern überall zu hören👍
Just magic!!!!
this song kicks ass so much :O
First time i've checked out this band. Very impressed.
keep in mind this is very different from their first four records ( those sounds sort of Ministry but before them)
Don't miss "The Great Cull" or "European Superstate" or my favortie "Fresh Fever From The Skies"
They're honestly one of the best bands ever. I can pretty much put their entire back catalogue on and not get bored, and their new stuff is actually very good! Their best single's either "The Wait" or the original single version of "Wardance". This single's a bit of an oddity though.
Robert Memory, I wish you were in the record shops then rather than now praising the band on youtube. Its too late now, they never became the new Pink Floyd as one of the UK music newspapers called them when reviewing the 1985 LP. Absolutely related to poor sales.
👍👍👍
love it. driven by its bassline and intrigueing lyrics, this piece inspired me throughout all my rockband years
Love the 80's❤👍😎
This song is just one of many that prove the Singles collection is one of the best collections ever put out.
True that.

This song is insanely good. Not sure how it did in 86', I was 7 years old. Nonetheless a fantastic song.

El sonido y la atmósfera hipnótica que tiene este tema es tremendo... Escucha Prong disco (cleasing) donde tocó el bajista fallecido paul raven.
still alive. still listening to '80s music
Inmortal.....
I love this fucking song!!! RIP Raven!!!
Simply wonderful..
Le générique de l’émission Pop-Rock Station avec Francis Zegut, l'animateur de radio qui revient souvent sur les groupes qui mon marqué.
Their 80's stuff is so evocative of a distinct 6th sense without a name I'm aware of. It's strongest in dreams, but certain locations and times have it. Something magnetic, channeled with their music. They are truly magical. Geordie Walker is the probably the most underrated guitarist of all time.
Great guitarist. Same set up as Queen!
80’s or not this is timeless ❤️
They are opening for Tool in November. I've loved these guys since I was little. Fan since 1985.
Same year I got into them after hearing Night Time album in a party.
Make sure noones messin around and noones throwin mud
Whhhaaaaaaat??? Would never have guessed. Did you see?

One of the most beautiful and rousing songs ever.
Bela música, apesar de muito antiga ...e tão apaixonante !
Guitar sails and bursts through the ensuing decades of World decay and the drums are the march of time.
Keyboards are the haunted spirits of silence. Vocals push forward with passion and prophetic pose.
LOVE LIKE BLOOD is as relevant today as it was so many Sunrises and Sunsets ago.
First time hearing this song, and I'm in love.
Check out their first album, a masterpiece. ua-cam.com/video/U7WPI4TJImo/v-deo.html
Great memories. My Love (1928) and I (1965) have both fallen victim to dementia. :-). Thanks for this song. For me (1965). She's in to other music.

SPIRITUAL CRAMP r/woosh
nordisch byNature and are you not, Sir, one very clever British that was a fan of Phil Collins? You, the British, buried bands like this one, making them starve with record sales in the vicinity of top 80.
Killing Joke are not Goth.
What a great song. I'm an 80's kid but this seems to have passed me by somehow.
Finally I found the band and song name!
Muy buena canción. Voy a decir algo que suena a gente mayor, pero la musica de los 70' 80' 90' era realmente buena. Ahora es una decadencia salvo alguna excepción. Se estudiaba musica de verdad.
Much better than the commercial version.
Pat Moon comercial version?
RIP Geordie, you will be greatly missed. 😢💜
wow, first heard this wonderful Song in 1987, thank you so much dear Killing Joke, now i am 50, so many greetings from Brunswick in Germany:)
