    Came to look at the comments to see people informing him of the purposely designed 1mm end clip movement. Good to see plenty of teachers saving the day lol.

    Hi James, got this from us tape.com but it explains the deliberate loose hook at the beginning of the tape measure.
    “The metal tip at the end of your tape measure is a little bit loose for a reason. ... This isn't an error: it's meant to provide you with accurate readings whether you're measuring the inside or outside edge of a surface. This feature is known as “true zero”.

      Ahhhhh good shout. That makes sense!

    • @WalterFieldingJr
      @WalterFieldingJr 3 роки тому

      Before I knew this I hammered the rivets at the end so that it wouldn’t move…..then realised shortly after I had ruined it and had to add 3mm every time I measured anything from the outside 🤣🤣

    FYI The end of tape measures are meant to move. The movement should be the width of the metal end piece/hook. Pushed up against a wall the end piece should fit snug against the end of the tape (which actually ends fractionally before '0'mm). If it is 'hooked' onto something it 'loosens' leaving a gap (the same size as the width of the metal end piece) so that the measurement inside the hook is acrually zero.
    Edit - Then I read the million other comments saying the same thing. Ha

    I think the slack on the tip of the tape is to provide accuracy by sliding the 1mm that the hook takes up.

  • @hippychip1159
    @hippychip1159 3 роки тому +2

    Nice one, a good tape is worth its weight, just as an FYI, the movement on the hook is to compensate for its thickness when taking and internal measurement.
    A sign of a good tape is when the movement on the hook is exactly the same as it's thickness.
    I have one of these, and it's a blinded!!
    Keep up the good work fella.
    Qi.The part of the tape with the measurement on it I believe is called "the blade"

    Pretty sure the movement on the end is to accommodate internal and external measurements,the thickness of the tab should be the same as the movement distance.i have that tape and yes it spot on

    I've never had an OX tape measure (or any OX tools) so I wouldn't be able to judge. For me, I use Stanley tape measures, they come in all sizes and last for ages. Just yesterday I was thinking about tools I couldn't do without and a couple of my 12v Bosch tools came to mind. The small angle grinder and the sabre saw, which I bought on a whim, I use them all the time now and would definitely recommend them to any plumber. Keep the videos coming ;)

      I use stanley fatmax, and the belt clips suck! So i spent $6-7 on a pouch at home depot and the clip was longer so it clipped over the belt and not just on the face of the belt.. ive had it for years and its never come off my belt

  • @samjarman3136

    Isn't the end bit supposed to move, to allow for the thickness of the end when you're measuring inside or outside of something?

    Hi, enjoy your content.. note that but is designed to measure up against something or from the end of a bit of wood, it accounts for the 1 mm differential:-) it may go out after some years granted.

    Not sure it's so good for plumbing but I am loving the Hultafors TALM3 metric-only tape measure. Brilliant for internal measurements which other tape measures don't have. Love the metric only on it as well (Who actually uses imperial :-) ).
    Also super accurate for cabinet construction when marking out plywood can get it within a mm with the track saw.
    I would buy one as a second tape as it compliments a standard tape / complete owns it :-)

    The reason for the ability to slip on the end of the tape a good tape will slip exactly the amount of the thickness of that piece of metal at the end of the tape so that whether you are pushing or pulling the fraction is actually exact so when you're pushing against the end of the tip you lose that 30 second opinion but if you're pulling from me and of that metal tip you would get that Thirty second of an inch back or whatever gauge the thickness of that metal tab is...
    Only good tape measures are able to have that slip forwards and backwards it's the exact amount of the thickness of the end

    The ox hook is designed to adjust slightly. If you measure up to something it goes flush against what your measuring and if it hooked on something then it pulls away slightly to take the hook out of the measurement equation to get an accurate measure
    Look at number 5 here for better explanation www.ustape.com/hidden-features-of-measuring-tape/

    do you like that tape measure because its fat then and can squat, actually i was going to order one until you convinced me you didn't know how to use it, all that gripfill on the end will make it more inaccurate than the so called loose end. how often do you measure open spaces above ground, no one needs a floating arched tape.It should be straight. Donut. love the videos anyway, keep it up.

      @@alextomlinson Definitely not. They're most robust built tape measures I've ever used. I've seen and used fairly many of them and never seen one that would've had ie. bad brake. Plus it's the only tape measure I've ever seen that you can actually buy spare parts. Never bought ones, but I was really surprised when I heard about it. Looks can be deceiving, you should try one before judging. It's just so convenient to scribe with metering device.
