- In this video, I will show step by step the restoration of an old rusty knife. This is an unusual rusty knife, and this is a bayonet knife of the Word War 1939-1945. This knife is for the Mauser K98 rifle.
Mauser 98 is a German rifle created in 1898 by Mauser. It was in service with the German army until the end of World War II and gained a reputation for high-precision and reliable weapons. Various variants of the Mauser rifle are still popular today as hunting and sporting weapons.
First, I'll take it apart for parts. Over time, and this is more than 80 years, rust has strongly penetrated into it. So that the screws cannot be unscrewed, it was necessary to completely destroy the wooden handle in order to unscrew the screws with clamps. WD-40 comes to the rescue. To remove rust, I immerse all parts of the knife in vinegar and leave it for a whole day.Then I clean off the rust with a metal brush.
When making a wooden handle, I use oak. With a wood cutter, I will remove excess material to create a ledge that will firmly hold the handle in the correct position. I will cover the handle of the knife with oil-wax.

Re-construction would have been right word.
Restoration doesn't mean destroying grips and re-sharpening the blade.
But nothing was lost with this very common, rusty bayonet. End product was good.
why didn't you replace the mussel blast guard plate?
Работу по очистке грязи проделали удачно, но вот реставрацию вообще не увидел, накладки ориг нальные угробили, клин на штыке не точился вообще по уставу, огниупорную проставку выкинули. Ну просто штык превратили в мусор.
Смотри на свой мусор. И не беспокойся чужим.

Не ображайтесь, але це не реставрація. Реставрація - це відновлення до початкового стану. Лезо у оригінальних багнетів к98 не точились. Гострим мав бути лише кінчик для колючих ударів. Пластина, яку ви зняли, має теж бути - вона захищає накладки руків'я від розпеченого ствола. З повагою.

Зря заточил.
Не пойму зачем выборку на внутренней стороне накладки было делать ? Это место под накладками должно быть свободным , оно предназначено под шомпол при пристёгивании штыка к винтовке. Зачем точить штык ? Да ещё и до остроты бритвы . Штык для К98 с завода идет не точеным . Потому как оружие это колющее . Ну и наконец третий момент. Почему после стольких трудов вы не исправили закругленную геометрию кончика лезвия ? В общем трудов много а толку . Накладки кстати как и радиатор (который вы так и не поставили на место) под них в наше время можно спокойно купить . В общем моё личное мнение - лучше было бы и не начинать эту реставрацию , потому что как был похож на кухонный нож так и остался им только стал острее и чуть красивее.
