This was not John Marshall's first time filling in for James. When I saw Metallica on the Master of Puppets tour in Nashville, James had broken his wrist skateboarding and came out in a cast and did the vocals wwith John on guitar.
John Marshall (born January 04, 1962) is an American musician, best known as a former guitarist for the heavy metal band Metal Church (1986-1996, 1998-2001). He was the guitar tech for Metallica's lead guitarist Kirk Hammett.[1] Marshall also became the fill-in rhythm guitarist for Metallica's James Hetfield on two occasions when Hetfield was injured. First in 1986 (while still performing his duties as guitar tech) while Hetfield's wrist was broken, and again in 1992 when Hetfield was recovering from burn injuries. Marshall joined the band onstage for a performance of "Sad but True" during Metallica's four-day 30th anniversary concert in December 2011 at the Fillmore in San Francisco. He also briefly played in progressive thrash metal band Blind Illusion (which also featured Les Claypool and Larry LaLonde of Primus). 62 AÑOS.
I was 4 on this day. about 3 or 4 years later i heard about metallica for the first time, and since then, i'm a hugh fan. holding my esp right now, playing their songs, having a good time
It's annoying when you're trying to show a bandmate how to play a certain part. And some other bandmate is dicking around on his instrument instead of keeping quiet for a little while.
@@tsav8449 Exactly. This scene gave me flashbacks, of certain people. There was a drummer I had the misfortune of playing with. I swear, if there was music being played, he had to play along. Otherwise, I don't know, the world would come to an end... At one point I just wanted to hear if this "singer", could actually sing. It wasn't even my band. "Here, do it acoustically. You take my acoustic guitar and play the song, and you sing. And let's see where we stand." He couldn't give the drumsticks a break, not even in that situation...
Nah dude he was in the wrong here. There’s a time to practice and a time to chill. When someone is teaching a part you don’t play your instrument in the background
Saw this 'incarnation' of Metallica at Day on the Green in 1992 (w/ GnR) where James sang, and John Marshall played guitar: he did an excellent job, great show.
There was a point in the early stages of Metallica where Hetfield was the lead singer and didn't play guitar. They even had press photos made of the band with him holding just a mic stand while everyone else was holding their instruments, lol.
Actually this was years after Cliff died, when James suffered a pyro accident and was unable to play guitar, and John Marshall filled in on guitar once again.
it is interesting that every living room guitarist thinks they know how to play metallica songs , until they actually have to play them note for note perfect.
Totally. When watching this, I thought to myself, 'If I was given the opportunity to fill in for James on guitar..how long would I need to get ready...and properly learn a set of their biggest songs'. Their shows are long. I figure that I could learn 1 song a day...and I have been playing for 30 years. Marshall did not have a month to get ready. Sure, he knew the songs and had filled in before..but playing songs and playing songs properly, in front of 20 thousand people, who know the songs and expect to hear all of the parts, are 2 very different things.
Imagine just chilling outside that room listening to Metallica rehearse
Newsted always went a million miles an hour. Miss that dude.

Practice how you play
It's pretty normal for band practices.
1:03 me and my best friend when we play
John was in Metal Church back in the 80 He was the tallest rhythm guitarist in metal....
James looks short in comparison...
And John was part of the best years of Metallica. He even was in the bus where Cliff Burton died.
Quorthon was very tall too...
@@togoveroI thought the same thing, he must be 6’7 or more

They say in the video that he had subbed for him before.
I saw them on that tour at the Manchester Apollo in England. Great night.
James broke his arms so many times Skateboarding that they put it in his contract that he couldn’t skateboard on tour anymore😂😂😂
I miss the 80's and early 90's really bad. This tour was beyond magical. My friends and went to the Rose Bowl Pasadena show on October 3, 1992.
I really do agree.
I agree
It was such a blast
I just watch this footage and realise how much I miss Jason in that band!
James had never opened himself this way.
Imagine the pressure that guy was under, and he went out there and kicked ass.

This thing Jason does,is the most annoying thing during a rehearsal. If you want to fool around between songs, just turn volume down.

James actually had amazing stage presence without the guitar. A metal God.
I remember some of this on an MTV behind the music or something back in the day
