When Alfa Romeo Collaborated With... Nissan?

- Going into the 1980's, Alfa Romeo was struggling. What they needed was a brand new, modern, world-beating hatchback to put them back on the world stage. However, with finances doing so poorly, they weren't going to be able to do it alone. They therefore enlisted the help of Japanese brand Nissan to get this project going- surely this collaboration was going to bear fruit? Right?
(Episode 2)
Motoring Monstrosities is the series where we dissect some of the communities least favourite cars that history gave us, from the Austin Allegro to the and the Delorean DMC-12, and from the Ford Pinto to the Alfa Romeo Arna!

What are your opinions on this quirky Italian hatchback?
Just never expected, out of all the brands, Alfa and Nissan in a collaboration (and also the fact that it was a really bad rebadge)
I thought it was ugly when it first came out ,as an "alfista", but today I look at it differently, maybe because today a lot of cars looks all the same, and are ugly as hell
I owned a 1.5 Nissan Cherry Europa so the rebadged Arna in UK (Purchased used not from new in the early 90's) for about a year (I changed cars a lot back then).
Whilst the engine consistently leaked water into the engine where oil should be :) I always thought of it as a brilliant car due to prior cars being less sporty, I do remember the rare light cluster being a problem, and rust was an issue (though Id had two hand me down Japanese cars so was aware of that problem, and had worse rust on a later Japanese cars. Worst thing it let me down on was whilst driving in the pouring rain one day the drivers side wiper arm fell off (not the blade, the actual arm) which was interesting at the time.
I think saying its looks were an issue is a bit unfair, as it was from the outside simply a Cherry and there were many Cherrys around at the time, many people didn't even know it was different.
It was fast, and importantly for me was cheap as it had already flopped so was being heavily discounted, I used to consider it a cheaper and more subtle cherry turbo (bar the lime green seats).
if I remember rightly and it was a while ago - Car cost me £1500 back then and £1500 to insure (TPFT) I replaced it with the Sylvia S12 as a part chop (still with water leak), later still I had a Alfa 147 and it let me down more than the Cherry but that's another story.
Bottom line its a Alfa (kinda) you always seem to let them off, and I still have fond memories of the car so it wasn't all that bad.
I love these videos, they give a nice, breif insight into cars that I've never even heard of!!! Keep them coming!
I would love an episode on the Australian Ford AU Model falcon, both got beaten by Holden and the Commodore on the road and race track
I think the Arna supposed to fuse Japanese hi tech & reliability & Italian artistic fanservice, but it isn't!
TBH,
The Nissan body style was the best part of the car.
Having owned full-on Nissan versions of this car, I can say they were just fine.
I'd love an Arna, even it was just a non-runner.
The body style is the worst . The Japanese can’t design anything
Shame, this could've been a genuinely good little car.
More of this please!!!
Another episode is currently in early production!

YAAAAYYYYY!!!
Always thought this thing looked like a Nissan but I never knew that it actually was lol!
I agree with many things u say but I disagree about the comment about the boxer engines these were very reliable and in the sud was quick in those days the average 2.0 litre engine only produced about a 100bhp so 95bhp out of a 1.5 was good
As an italian i will give you a 3/10 in the pronunciation
Very kind
hey, since you hated the pontiac aztek, what do you think about the aztek concept that it's made 23 years ago?
I have the model down for an episode in the future so I will likely cover it then
@@JackohMotors ok
Just curious... Why do you say that the Almera is "horrible"?
Used to ride in one as a kid. The inside was very cramped and depressing and the outside wasn't much better.
So it’s Ugliest alfa Romeo with Japanese crap. It’s a disgrace to the alfa Romeo badge
