Zelda 1 - Hot Take: This Game is Good

  • Yup. I'm turning "Was Always Good" into my thing when I do a big video series covering a single franchise. I know it makes no sense for Zelda, or anything else outside the context of Sonic. This is no longer me trying to make an argument against a popular notion. But that's why I like it. It's going to confuse people. And I find that funny. And long after I stop doing Sonic videos, the og Pariah fans will be the only ones who understand why my videos are called that.
    btw, I have no idea how this game is supposed to be displayed. Most old games did not render at a 4:3 aspect ratio. They actually were narrower, then stretched to 4:3. And many games accounted for this stretch in the art, to look correct. Zelda 1 however, is inconsistent with its art. Some things are perfect squares or circles before being stretched. Others only after. So it seems they didn't yet fully grasp the 4:3 stretch concept at this time, resulting in some things always looking wrong one way or the other.
    I'm sure anyone familiar with this game noticed the many changes Zelda Redux makes to the original game. Fast item switching, arrows, no rupee cap, etc. Lots of nice changes and improvements all over. I believe the original game didn't even have cracks showing where to bomb or which trees could be burned. How were you supposed to find most of those things? Just bomb everything? Seems like you could easily run into problems of running out of bombs like that. Just another issue with grinding for resources.
