@@InMyHead he couldnt find and replace the chip that was bad lol 😆 need QC for the QC jk of course cause not everyone has a stockpile of boards like lyons arcade to diagnose things like this
pretty sure this is my buddy Frank's machine..I fixed it once..it worked for a few days..then the speech died..good to know an expert got a hold of it instead of my amateur ass! I had to pin the top of the PCB 40 pin connector..I did the rectifier board and installed all that stuff for him. game didn't work until I pinned the 40 pin and used the ribbon cable too..good to see it working again!
Oh man, Gorgar, I played it a lot back in the 80's.Funny thing is that I had a friend that got baptised the nickname Gorgar (real name 'Georg') because he played it religiously at every chance he got. He was pretty darn good at it too. Oh, back in the day......memories.
GORGAR SPEAKS! Taito brought Gorgar to Brazil by the name of Drakor... If i recall correctly our version had the heartbeat only, no speech, but Gorgar's eyes on the playfield glowed green! Fantastic game!
I'd never heard about the Brazilian version, that's interesting... the Heartbeat is just a sound effect so I guess the version over there just had the regular sound board without the add on speech board, it makes sense because it would have been in English if he spoke, and it was very complicated for them back then to make any sounds at all, probably would have cost a fortune to re-record it in Portuguese....
Indeed, and sadly it wouldn't have sounded good... Taito did manage to add speech in Portuguese to their version of Black Knight (Cavaleiro Negro), but it sounded really bad compared to the original - Taito probably adapted a way older speech system to the machine. But even so I still love Cavaleiro Negro, it's my favorite machine to this day!
"Gorgar speaks! How cool is that?" Took the words out of my mouth. I spy a Flight 2000 in there. I hope that is coming up soon. Love those old Sterns. Fixing up a Trident myself at the moment.
Flight 2000 is definitely coming up, we need to repaint the center of the playfield, it's gonna take all kinds of work! Trident is a really cool game too, love those old Sterns!
I've had my Gorgar for 25 years... you're gonna have to bury me in it. (chuckle) I was hoping this one had his original boards as I had sound issues the last time I had him plugged in. Mine were completely different symptoms though and it started creeping me out so I unplugged him and put him to sleep for a while. He's been sleeping far to long, I will be getting to him soon and start addressing his issues. Pssssst, btw, it's beat me... not feed me. :c) He only has seven words in his vocabulary (kinda like the kids these days) ;c) Gorgar, speaks, beat, got, you, me and hurt.
Oh man I remember playing Gorgar as a kid. It was both awesome and kinda freaked me out at the same time, particularly the speech. It really was something else and did set itself apart from other games.
i have repaired an arcade machine before but never a pinball machine, though if i had to choose i would choose this one to repair cause the voices and everything is just extremely cool and awesome
This brings back memories. In 1979 I was a freshman in high school we used to play this in the bowling alley down the street from the school. So much fun.
Liked the game at university in the 80s, was a tad bit easy. Most days you would come in there and there would be credits left on the machine. Lots of fun.
If you think about it that would probably be the hardest part about the design, trying to make sure it's just hard enough to make money but not too hard to chase people off.... thanks for watching Retiree chemistry!!!
One of the great classic games. I remember the local arcade by my house used to have this game in there used to play it all the time. Also the artwork on three Bally games lost world, paragon and centaur both had cool artwork.
Great job on finding the sound board problem. He has commented below (CaptNRetro) Did a great job on putting the mpu and driver board together to get the game that far. You guys are the Road Warriors of the pinball world for me. I am going to paint the backglass and see how that comes out. What is name of the tool that you mention when the machine gun effect happened? Thanks for the free oil. Frank( Gorgar still speaks) Thanks Ronnie
It's just called a Leaf Switch Adjustment tool, here's a link to one : www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/77-SWK-A Thanks Frank, it was a pleasure working on your machine!
I had a strange no speech problem with a firepower I had purchased. Turned out after burning multiple chips and still no change I noticed it had the wrong sound rom version installed. Replaced it with the right version and that’s all it needed.
I had a problem with a Firepower one time where the thing would reset when you hit certain switches, I couldn't figure it out to save my life but finally figured out it was the game rom. It tested as fine but a new rom fixed the problem. One of the goofiest issues I've ever seen on a game! The wrong rom on the sound board thing I've seen before, you were lucky it was strapped the same, sometimes the jumpers have to be changed to change the rom! Thanks for watching as always Dennis!
WOW...I don't think I've seen a Gogar in 35 years...Walker's Pinball Palace in Madison Heights, MI. Many a quarter dropped in that place. We have a couple places left that are doing Pinball machines (including a Pinball Museum near me), but that's been closed since C19.
Definitely when you move a machine good idea to check like you said don't wanna blow up nothing. Great video as always. Good condition machine your starting with.Have a great week
Loved playing Gorgar 👍 From the era of Fire Power, before the YM-2151 changed the sound of WMS pinballs forever. That uses the 55536 CVSDM for telephony speech. You can check the clock and the single up/down data line to the chip to see if it’s missing. If it’s there, then your audio output is messed up
Very nice. I am a sucker for early speech synthesis, vocoders, etc. Speaking games were a big deal back in the day. Just fascinating. Ron, when will we get a Bally Night Rider video? You've been teasing us for a loooong time, LOL.
i can remember playing GorGar when it first came to the UK in Kent. What a colourfull machine hadn't seen anything like it before. Wasn't it Williams first machine with Speech? Bally's was Centaur? Well worked out Ron.
Nice work. Thanks for showing this one off, especially the replacement boards. I was thinking about getting replacement boards for my Williams World Cup. It has a ROM issue on the diagnostics. I was trying to figure out the best way to replace to fix this issue. Maybe it's just the ROM chips. I'll keep working through it. Thanks again for the videos!
I always liked Gorgar. Dropped a lot of quarters in that one. Black Knight came out the next year, which kind of took the speech to the next level. Wasn't the designer of Gorgar also his voice?
I never looked it up but maybe, it kind of sounds like one of the designers :) By the way, we will have some Black Knight videos coming up really soon, the Black Knight is in the building!
I know why the incandescent bulbs were kept for the lights which turn off and on. LEDs tend to turn off and on quite fast versus incandescent bulbs. This is due to the filaments on the incandescent glowing after the power is turned off. This makes for a softer on/off cycle versus the sharp on/off cycle of the LEDs.
I had a Gorgar a few weeks ago. Bought it to fix and sell. Couldn't get rid of the pinball that eats souls fast enough. Great game, but not a theme for me.
Wow! What a great machine and a very good repair video! I always wondered about restoring the artwork (my Joker Poker artwork was in terrible shape with flaking). Do you guys ever do touchup to the artwork?
Yes we do depending on what's going on, it's hard to get it really nice though, since we always brush it on, on a backglass you can see the brush strokes since it's translucent. It would be better to spray the colors but much harder and takes a lot more time... thank you for watching Matt!
@@LyonsArcade Have you ever tried adding a thinner to the paint? I recently learned about and used one in painting wood trim and it worked great in "removing" the brush strokes. I guess it just lets the paint settle in before it sets up.
Just curious. If you had that Gorgar for sale, in it’s current fully working condition, how much would you ask for it? I’m trying to get a ballpark figure as to what I would expect to pay for a hood machine.
1979, great year and great game. If the owner was to touch up the back glass is there a certain brand of paint they would have to use and would it effect the back lighting?
Wait a minute.. There was a bug in the voice programming.. During the attract mode when gorgar starts saying something if you insert a quarter at the same time. It would do something to the voice chip and it would stop working.. I can't remember if it was on a podcast or I read it somewhere. But I think that maybe that's the problem.
Never saw that triple thick trick with the windows. I've usually sprayed my finger tip with WD-40 and wipe the window with my finger. Wipes right off when done. I'll try this next time. I still suck at gorgar. I want that night rider
