Exactly!! What made Ripley so good as a strong female character is the fact she was human.. she was smart but didn’t know exactly what to do , she was scared but had to be brave to survive, she didn’t need big bulky muscles or just be able to do everything perfectly. She grew and evolved into a survivor. And her biggest strength was being a mother .. she was not gonna give up on Newt she was gonna find her or die trying to. That is a mother !!

Sigourney should be very proud of her character. Most actors never, ever achieve such a performance where people relate to the character so personally. She deserved the Oscar. The final scene where Ripley goes into nest and brings out Newt is one of the great scenes in sci-fi history.

Ripley is the perfect heroine. She's just the usual working girl under "normal" conditions who also happens to have a great deal of moral integrity.
But turns out to also be a survivor under impossible odds. She's a heroine we the audience loves rooting for.
P.S. Ripley didn't go back to "keep busy". She went back to see it through that all the creatures, these "monsters", were destroyed, so she could sleep without horrible nightmares. Great stuff.

In the movie, she had been drifting in space for over 50 years. Her daughter had passed away only two years before she was found so she never got to keep the promise to her daughter that she would be back. When she met Newt her maternal instincts kicked in and she longed for the little girl that she lost, which is why Rippley refused to leave without Newt at the end of the movie.
And the story of her motherhood goes on when she can only give birth to a xenomorph at the end of “3”, only to kill her offspring (again) at the end of “Resurrection.” Ripley’s story is so sad!
The 2nd movie is what made her a super star. It was incredible and no one other than her could have played that character.
Beautiful, intelligent, well poised. My type of woman.

This movie is a decade older then me and it still captured my heart instantly. Alien and Aliens were so great because they were so different in their vision yet shared a complex understanding of ripleys character.
She was so good at playing this part that she embodied the whole franchise!
These two movies man... They can go into an entirely different direction genre-wise, but are so well tied into the same universe, and Ripley holding it all together. That being said I like other characters in these movies a lot too. There is a lot behind them that is left unsaid in the movies but comes through the screen.
Such a lovely woman. Arguably one of the best sequels ever made in a franchise. Glad she did the movie she was superb

Most of what you have today is boastful loudmouths who do all that "I am super confident look at me" to cover up so much insecurity. The modern world in general lacks being genuine and I think we have social media to thank/blame for that most of all. So many children just adding numbers to an ageing body, but no real growth.
Aliens is a perfect movie. Writing, directing, casting, performances, cinematography, sets, costumes, props, everything is the absolute best and has stood the test of time. Ripley was the “girl boss” done right decades ago.

Yeah talking about all that, apart from that one time where a xenomorph goofily jumps on a marine in the hive, every time these creatures come into shot they look in a way like they really exist, and I do not know many movies that were able to accomplish that.
Edit: And also: She was a girl boss who didn't need the term and didn't just command people around because she felt like she deserved it or mistakenly felt superior to those around her. Just a character of inspiring passion and fire. That is all it takes. If you ever watched game of thrones, a true king never needs to say the phrase "I am the king" or something like that :)

Ripley is how is an example of writing a strong female lead correctly and without fuss
While this is true, one consistency that I think is sometimes overlooked by those who watch these movies through a particular gaze is that Ripley's reactions to the various men of the crew are captured _very_ purposefully.
Thinking back to that scene when the soldiers at the table are joking about 'saving colonists' daughters from their virginity', the camera focuses in on her and her microexpressions for what's only a few seconds, but feels longer. You can very much feel her discomfort and disgust through the screen. It is silent, but it speaks volumes.
A similar scene I think of is when clone Ripley says 'you can't teach it tricks' and the scientist says, 'we're teaching you' - that gleam in her eye is everything. Even when she's stronger, smarter, and faster than her human counterparts with her xenomorph dna, she is still seen as a commodity, a project, or something less than human. But having one company of people to work with, she can't say anything, only do what many of us have had to do to make it through a situation where adaptability and survival are paramount.
Ripley takes a lot of her conflict in stride, which can make it easy to forget what she's dealing with when the monsters are human. While the franchise doesn't verbalize all of it's social themes through dialogue outright (feminism, SA, pregnancy and birth) they are very much there, and I agree that Sigourney made Ripley a complex, impactful character on screen for many of those reasons.
@@itscris01 it's even more in your face in aliens when she is telling them exactly why she blew up the ship in the first movie and they basically don't believe her.
But at the end of the first two movies she is the one saving the day and protecting countless others.
Her character is very well written, especially given the time the first two movies were made

You really can't compare Alien and Aliens. The first is a suspense horror and the second is an action horror making them, in many ways, vastly different and to be judged by different standards.
@ashakydd1 this is actually what I like about the Alien franchise: each entry is vastly different from the previous ones (up until 3 at least).
That is a sentiment that a genuinely believe because that is exactly what happens in the movie. Sigourney Weaver really understands the characters she plays and reads out. She genuinely understands the role she's taking as the character because that's exactly what happens. Sigourney Weaver is one of my favourite actors ever.
Sensible, well spoken, intelligent: she’s perfect and the way she approaches every role shows exactly that.

Great actress, great character. Owns her space in the story but not by detrimenting others or by making her perfect - Ripley is a strong character because of her doubts and weaknesses just as much as her strengths.

Glad she came back for that Aliens. Massive props to the cast, story line and an all around fantastic movie. Classic military science fiction and Hollywood got it right (for once), far better than the ones that came after.
Taking that role again was a wise choice; it did earn her an Oscar nomination! (And even getting a nomination can already be seen as a "win" considering that those five nominees are selected from perhaps hundreds of entries.)
Because she came back to the role, she kind of made the whole franchise hers... until recently, that is.

Ellen Ripley is the greatest female heroine in cinema . Sigourney Weaver was fantastic in her role as Ripley. To quote Sgt. Apone "Absolutely BadAss."
Other heroines do come to mind, but not across a full franchise like Ripley does. Of course, one might argue that Alice in the Resident Evil movies is comparable, but definitely not in terms of character depth IMO.
I don't watch many movies. It's partly because these movies were so good.
Ripley, an awesome remake hero. The around her sucks but she just gets on with it. She razor sharp mind, arse kicking abilities and with compassion as required.
Still the ultimate action hero since I was 13 in 1980... Forget the rest
I just watched "Aliens" for the first time recently and I was left with the impression that Ripley decided to go back and face/defeat the aliens so she could feel a sense of peace and closure. She kept having those terrible nightmares so facing the aliens would be the only way to end them. Plus, at the end of the movie Newt asks if she can dream and Ripley responds, "Yes honey, I think we both can." Just my take.

There is one Alien book that I listened to once that was really good, where there is an occurence that happens in between Alien and Aliens. I forgot the name but it was awesome too!
It was crazy to go from Sci-fi horror to Sci-fi action and succeed.

Another reason why I try to forget _Alien 3._
Ripley is the greatest female character ever on screen I think. She's like a knight in shining armor going alone into the hive facing certain death to save a little girl, while also being compassionate and even motherly (which makes sense because she has a child - Amanda). She is able to be what men would consider the peak of what it means to be a man while still retaining her femininity. I absolutely love that character.
