    That's because people just format/delete them. Deleting the files puts them in a hidden state, the OS basically lies to you saying it's gone but it's actually still there, waiting for it to be overwritten. You need to use a special tool which destroys all the data on it by setting everything to 0 which may take a while. Destroying it isn't the only way.

    Easiest way to clear a thumb drive:
    1. Delete all the data on the USB
    2. Max out the space on the USB with random useless stuff
    3. Delete that content.
    All past content if ever retrieved will just be the random stuff due to the fact that the old data got replaced with the new data

    You have to format it completely. The “delete” button on an OS isn’t always permanent, for various reasons. And why would you need to buy a new drive and throw away the old one? Even if it’s just like a 16 GB drive you may as well just buy a USB hub and plug in all your old drives for a bit of storage expansion. This is really a non-issue.

    Technically you have to burn it. My comp sci teacher thought us this before, the only way to remove data is really to burn the item in question. That's what hackers do with their burn computers, once they do the deed, they burn the hardrives, and then douse the rest of the computer into a fire.

  • @davidpoulton7694
    @davidpoulton7694 5 років тому +5

    Experts say destroy the drive, this expert says format, use a data scrambler, and file shredder. Just pushing the delete button does not remove the recovery sector where you can restore the files. Encryption software also works but you want to make sure it's 256-bit or above.

    When you delete something, you rewrite that something with a 0 and that's it, the file isn't gone, it's just hidden. If you really want to delete something forever, use the DoD or the Gutmann method that uses an algorithm that "messes up" the data.

    I bought a used laptop from a person on Facebook Marketplace, they said they factory reset it and I saw they did but, after some digging, I found lots of personal information, I was so amazed I contacted the person and warned them of their mistake.

    And What i say is dont destroy them because of the following reasons:
    1. we can keep it in a safe place (like your drawers or cupboards of shelves)
    2. It would be a waste of money
    3. Anything you forgot to store will be destroyed along with it
