Use a MIDI keyboard (like Loupedeck) with Capture One and Darktable

  • I show you how to use a MIDI keyboard as hardware controls for software like Capture One or Darktable. It is so much nicer to use knobs and dials to change contrast/exposure/etc instead of using your mouse.
I started this project by trying to use MIDI2LR, but it only works with Lightroom. My solution should work for any keyboard and any software that supports keyboard shortcuts.

Thank you for your Introduction to MIDI translator Pro. I will use the X-Touch Mini from Behringer as a MIDI Controller. It has 16 Buttons and 8 Knobs with 2 Layer Options and should do a great job. I will map it for Darktable and Foto on OS X and IrfanView64 on Windows. Configuring for Capture One will be the next step. Was just looking how to use the Midi Translator Pro Software - you helped me a lot. Stay safe!

This is such a great idea. I am going to look into a MIDI controller so I can use this with Darktable! Thanks!

Thanks a lot man, you've saved me half a day figuring out how the bloody thing works!
    Cheers!

So, I'm not trying to be a hater, but I just wanted to state that devices like the loupedeck are actually MIDI "output" devices. They output MIDI signals which are then converted, etc... The reason you select it as the input in the software is not because it is a "input device" but rather it is because you are choosing the input of the software. It's a small technicality, and it is inconsequential as far as the overall understanding gained by the video. Thanks for the info btw, I was just looking into this because I have MIDI stuff sitting around for music creation and now I am going to try it out with capture one. Thanks man and keep up the good work 👍

Good clarification. I was thinking from the computer's point of view, so the keyboard is considered an input, but you're right, the keyboard outputs midi signal and is therefore an output device.

Thank you for this. If you want it, I have made a spreadsheet with commands for windows. There is a Darktable shortcut import and a complete project for Bohme MIDI Translator classic. Message me.

I would like to know a little bit about the thumbwheels that have the color dots under them. Are they relative ? Do they send out the same signal while turning the wheel in the same direction like the encoder wheels do? Thanks.

Not sure how applicable this is to regular midi controllers. I have an Akai Midi Mix I used for Lightroom. In your demonstration, the midi output variables are consistent, as you turn the knob, to a point. With mine, the knob puts out increasingly different variables. They step up or step down, depending on which way the knob is being turned. So, if I want to utilize this productively, the only way I can do it is to have one knob for increasing and one knob for decreasing.
Basically what happens is, each independent variable acts as a pushed button. Once that variable is reached with the knob, it will count as one keystroke, either up or down, IF I try to use one knob for adjustments. As I said, I noticed in your video that your variables do not change. That may be a feature of the Loupedeck. Not smart enough on Midi controllers to factually know that however!

That's really interesting. I don't have a different midi device to test with, but I wonder how successful you could be if you just choose one of the first outputs from your device. From what I understand of the MIDI protocol, the last two values just represent intensity.

Is there a prefab configuration for Capture One and Loupedeck?
A file with a starting configuration would be really helpful. Also I'm on Windows I'm not sure if that would make a difference.

An update on my own post:
Users submit their own preconfigurations for specific software/interfaces to BOME's website so little chance of finding that. I'll say there's great benefit to configuring from scratch though. Really helped me understand C1's interface and toolset. This video saved me, thank you!
Question: Have you found a solution to mapping the individual color channel alterations at the top of the Loupedeck?
