No. They were just the first ones to make it into a mega-hit. It was written by the late great Alex North, one of the finest film composers of all time, for the prison movie, "Unchained," in 1955, and sung for the movie by the legendary Todd Duncan, one of the first great African American opera singers, and the original Porgy in the very first production of George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess." The first single of it was recorded by Les Baxter, a big band singer of the 40s and 50s, and shortly thereafter, Al Hibbler, who had been the vocalist for Duke Ellington's orchestra, recorded it.
