This is one of my favorite bodyweight leg exercises, the box step-up. This exercise is a great explosive bodyweight leg exercise for strengthening your glutes and building explosive power for athletes. It is also a great addition to an existing bodyweight workout program if you want to further challenge your legs.
All you need for this box step-up exercise is a sturdy bench or a box. The ideal box/bench should be at mid-shin height. As you get stronger, you can raise the level of the box. Initially, you can do this exercise without adding any weights. As you progress, you can add weights in addition to raising the height of the box.
One common mistake people make while performing box step-ups is using the back leg to jump up onto the box. You want to put as much tension on the front leg as possible, creating tension on the front glute. Drive up with the front leg, slow and in control. Pay attention to this box step-ups tutorial to make sure you are getting the most out of this exercise.
**Do 5-10 reps each leg. You can use this exercise as the 2nd or 3rd exercise in your leg workout.

I didn't feel any stretch in my legs, or get anything aerobic out of it, even though the box was knee height. Should I add weights, do it quicker, or is that fine?
At one point, I required a wheel chair for long walking. This exercise helped me to develop my leg muscles enough to begin walking again with no assistance from my leg brace, cane, and I haven't had to use wheelchair/scooter for over 4 years. Simple exercise, but amazing results.

Will this help reduce knee pain? I get knee pain when climbing stairs yet i can hike 14 miles in trails, with the only issues arising from steep descents and sometimes large climbs.

Aside from lowerback pain, I also have pain in my groin area esp on the right side. Like, if I am lying down on the bed, its really hard for me to get up. Some people suggested me to stretch. Will this be helpful?

I'm 66 yoa. I have a artificial hip. Is this something that I can safely do to develop strength? Should I start stepping up on the side of my hip replacement?
Hey Bob, thanks for writing in and great question! However, this is something you'll have to verify with your doctor or therapist as only they know how far you've come since surgery. But when you are given the green light, start with a very small or low step, gradually increasing the height as your strength improves.
