  • Día de Muertos originated in Mexico, but over the past decade or so this tradition has found its way into the USA. San Antonio has one of the largest Day of the Dead celebrations in the country, complete with art installations, alters, cooking classes, and educational experiences. The celebration actually kicked off on October 23rd with the Muertos Fest, which National Geographic has named to be one of the Best Fall Festivals in the USA. While we aren’t here for that weekend, the celebration continues until November 2nd, and one big event that we can’t wait to see is the River Parade.

Excellent video! I lived in good ol' San Antone for about four years and I miss everything there and yes!...Dia de Muerte is absolutely huge there!

Tex mex is tex mex , in other words, another regional take on Mexican cuisine, like any other region in mexico. "Mexican " food in new mexico, California, Colorado, etc. is different , just like food from Oaxaca, Yucatan, baja or from the north is. We are Mexican also and it is our food.
And this is not meant to be taken in a negative way, you guys are great, just stating my thoughts and adding to the conversation. Just want to make that clear since "tone" is hard to decipher over text.

Totally agree with this sentiment. We've come to accept it's just something different!! You can't compare apples and oranges :)

We are a very unique city. Downtown is more for the tourists. Guadalajara grill is only good for drinks during Fiesta which is something you may look into and try next year. That is the real feel of San Antonio at its finest.

Ayyyyy hard shell tacos?? noooo... I feel so sorry that was your experience. San Antonio is filled with amazing Mexican food but it is not downtown where all the tourists are 🤫 🤭
My family ancestry is from Mexico. We have an ofrenda and go to Mass to pray for the eternal rest of the deceased, also to visit the cemetery. (Sometimes Mass at the cemetery.)
To be completely honest, as a local San Antonian, when I found out about the city's Dia de Muertos celebration, my sensibilities were kind of offended because of how it was marketed as an exotic spectacle for tourists or non-Mexicans. That's why I was interested to watch this video. Thank you for your hard work in making it!

Thanks for the heads up! We definitely felt like we ended up in a tourist area with those tacos! That's so interesting to hear your perspective on the festival! We agree that the meaning behind the event is totally different in the USA than it would be in mexico. Glad you enjoyed the video!

    It's Dia De LOS Muertos.

Both are technically right! You hear Dia de Muertos in Mexico more commonly though. In the states people tend to say Dia de los Muertos more.
