This x100. When I asked you about combing during the day and you talked about how it was bad to do all of the time, I realized how much shedding I was doing, whenever I was combing without water. I don't know how accurate or correct this is either, but running a number 7 or number 8 through my daughters hair after her shower, makes her hair so much better later when she brushes it in the morning. I assumed combing or brushing wet head hair, vs beard hair, had similar characteristics.

I think the dry beard comb comes a lot with newer beardsmen. I know I was super concerned with carrying a comb all the time in the beginning. Now with a med/long beard I just use my hands or occasionally use my “work comb”. Great video Dan.

I used to brush my beard during the day when dry. I have stopped. I occasionally brush my mustache for styling but I have learned when I go to wash my hands after using the bathroom (You drink a lot of water you need to go) and while my hands are still damp I run my hands through my beard to style and I feel it brings the scents out again. I have the Chicago pet comb in my shower to use during wash/conditioning. Great video

I always brush my beard out right after a shower while it's wet and fully hydrated. To me oil and water doesn't mix. Then I use a hairdryer on medium heat to dry a little bit and set the hairs for styling. Then I put my oil or butter in and then ease through it with my de tangler brush. Then use my boar bristle brush with the hairdryer to brush and pull the hairs back into place after running my oily fingers through and the heat seems to help the oil to move throughout my beard. Sounds like a long process but it takes me less than 5 minutes.

+1 on applying oil when your beard is very damp. It makes a huge difference in how long my beard stays relaxed an malleable, instead of immediately getting stiff after applying oil dry. I would also throw in a recommendation to only use heat when there is oil in your beard, to protect it. It prevents heat damage completely, if done right.

I've commented about this once before, and you rebutted saying hair breaking easier when wet was a myth, but you wouldn't elaborate further when I asked, so I figured a video was coming out. Really glad it came out soon, because the silence made me dig into the research further. The suspense was killing me. Lol. It really got me thinking about things. First off, I do comb or brush my beard almost exclusively when it's damp, right after applying oil, then again when I put butter in it. I have an extremely dry and curly red beard, so combing dry is almost impossible. However, if I straighten it, I apply beard balm. I use honest amish's balm almost exclusively, but I will use a butter with wax in it occasionally, like bahawat or Detroit grooming. If my beard has balm in it and it's straight, I don't have a hard time restyling with a comb for four or five hours after I've straightened then applied balm/butter. I only ever comb it with balm in it with the Chicago combs #8, because it doesn't cause my curly beard to bunch up at the end, and pull hairs. I don't tend to have a problem with tangles so much as the ends of my hairs getting bunched together at the end of the comb, due to the sheer volume I'm trying to move through the comb, so the #6 I style it with is out of the question. Since I started doing things this way six months ago, I haven't had but five or six split ends, and half of those were holdovers from when I combed more aggressively. I check a couple times a week for a half hour or so, and haven't found one in a few months. Now, the research I've read, and I've read a fair amount, although it's extremely hard to find, has all said that hair breaks easier when it's soaked. Not necessarily damp, but soaked and waterlogged. Hair absorbs 30% of it's weight in water when it's submerged, and that causes molecules to spread further apart, weakening the bonds in your hair. While beard hair is thicker, it still has the same chemical and physical properties as head hair, so it's still going to break easier, so I don't comb with conditioner in, just in case I do ever have a snag. With hair being so much more elastic when it's wet, the likelihood of it stretching beyond it's ability to self repair is far greater. That's what the science says. The amount of force it takes to damage wet hair is far less than the amount of force it takes to damage dry hair, because of that extra elasticity. I understand why people do it, because it does glide through the hair easier. I just don't, because I don't want to accidentally hit a tangle I don't know about, damaging a few hairs. Also, I'm a little concerned that combing with conditioner in will cause more of it to contact my skin, and that's not good for your skin. It tends to trap dirt and salts in once it's been allowed to coat your skin. I think you've done a video about it at some point. I don't believe combing dry is the answer, and I believe combing when it's saturated can be just as bad. So, I work it right in the middle, after oiling, because I always oil when my beard is really damp, almost still dripping, but not quite, so the hair is still a little more elastic and relaxed. You've probably already read it, but check out the "chemical and physical properties of hair" and the research it links, if you haven't. There is a ridiculous amount of information in it. It's all head hair stuff, but the chemical properties should be the same. I really appreciate everything you do, as always, man. You've changed my beard game and life completely. Keep up the great work, brother. God bless you and your family. 🤘🏻

Yep, when the mane's dry the hands feel the best . Combing and brushing a dry beard just feels unpleasant and the tangles end up pulling or ripping. If I'm going to be away from home all day I like to take a little sample bottle of oil just in case I need a quick brush and style.

Might get the number 8 comb into my arsenal..I take warm/hot showers and stopped wetting my beard in the shower tho I only wet my beard twice a week 1st time I do a deep wash using pinetar all natural bar soap by dr squash with luke warm water to deep clean and remove any product build up out of my beard then right after that with cold water I do a moisturizing wash using cool fresh aloe bar soap by dr squash and I let it air dry but before it gets completely dry while it’s hydrated but not wet I condition and massauge 100% grade A Shea butter into my beard making my beard soft and conditioned for weeks (I never have to put more product into my beard using only shea butter because my beard never dries using shea butter this allows me to comb my beard when ever without causing any breakage or having to reapply product untill my next wash), because I noticed that when i combed my hair with just water like I once did it did not stimulate blood flow to improve hair growth as much as a not dry beard but moisturized & conditioned beard did)… after I apply Shea butter I let the product sit for a minimum of 30 min before I brush with intelliflex* nylon brush by wet brush and for the 2nd wash through out the week about 3days after, I only do another moisturizing wash with cold water again. Also I don’t use any beard oils only Shea butter and this routine has given me outstanding and very fast results. I use to have a stressful patchy beard and now I have a full grown thick beard 💪🏼 also I clean my brush/comb with air-pressure/compressor gun atleast once a month to remove dabris or any build up of product that I might be putting back into my beard I found that wetting my brush just made the product build up even worse on the bottom of my brush but at the time warm water was my only option to clean it don’t get me wrong it worked to an extent but had better result also found myself having to replace my brush atleast once or twice a year or so

I'm literally in the middle of a beard trim and I have this thought and I just wanted to share the concept. What works on the left side or your beard might not work on the right side and if you chase this uniform kinda symmetrical form of your beard you might mess up the glory of the mane ya know what I'm saying!! I wet my beard ever 3 hours and comb all the time. I live in desert country to much dust.

So this isn't an advantage, but I do Comb when damp and it glides through. I do notice my hairs tend to stick together more and if I comb once again when dry it makes it look fuller and fluffier. Maybe I should figure something else out!

I do the same, sometimes. If I've put balm or waxed butter in my beard after straightening, or just to add a little moisturizing when it's feeling crummy, I can comb through it with a really wide tooth comb, like Chicago combs #8, or a pick, for the next few hours, and it does add a lot of volume, and I dig a lot of volume.

I agree, the comb moves much easier with very few snags when my beard is wet. Ok here's the but, I do comb when it's dry. My beard kinks up so I comb it out. Probably only twice a day, when dry, but it feels so much better to comb it out. I will comb like you said, if it snags I start again, I move slow or move at a different angle. I cannot disagree, wet preferred to dry. Thanks Dan, love ya brother.

Excellent advice! Chicago Pet Comb in the shower is a 100% must have for me, whether it's a wash, rinse or stripping night. It just feels so nice! The only time I comb my beard "dry" is first thing in the morning when there's still some residual butter from my bedtime application. With a good quality butter in the night before, my #8 glides right through.

Great videos, #8 in shower is a game changer, beard absolutely loves it. Once in a blue moon I'll run a comb thru it during the day. Having a healthy beard makes a big difference doing it safely. Typically use CLEAN hands if I need to adjust the style.

I always comb my beard wet night and day difference. Whenever I have someone say they can’t get a comb through their beard I always follow up with the question are you combing it when wet and the answer is always a resounding no.

A agree with this completely and do almost exactly what you do! I do however carefully use a wide tooth Chicago comb #8 for style throughout the day. But I’m extremely careful and I don’t do it all the time 👊🤘

    Dan,
YES! Always comb my beard when it is wet. In the shower I usually comb while I’m rinsing the conditioner out of the beard. Don’t know if that makes a difference but it works for me. Also sometimes during the day for a moisture refresh I dampen my beard and apply fractionated coconut oil and comb through. Learned that one from Joe T . 👊🏼👍🏼
