I hate to be that guy, but Andrew Savage didn't sing some of these songs that you said he did. Austin sang "One Man No City" and a few others actually. Also this was the first album where everyone was supposed to write songs and contributed. "I Was Just Here" was written by Sean when his favorite Chinese food place closed down a day after he had just been there. Just to let you know.
Are you implying that people don't want to see an extra 2 minutes of the internet's sexiest music nerd? You don't deserve a thank-you. He has the best teeth in the game and if I can gaze upon those beautiful chompers for a few extra minutes, you can be damn sure that I will.
These guys are the absolute best rock band around today. Listened to my new vinyl copy today, and this album is a solid 9 for me. Songwriting is excellent and smart as always, and the music goes from loud punk to the slow deadpan songs, and it is always executed well. I am biased, mind you, but there is no doubt that this album is incredible. This may just be their best album yet, except for maybe Light Up Gold, and I love them all (except Monastic Living. Fuck that.)
This album is thumbs up for me as well. Good Silver Jews comparison. I also hear a bit of Elvis Costello in their influences. They wear their influences but not really on their sleeve. I feel like they take a lot of good things from 90's indie rock yet they have a pretty fresh sound.
Yo Fantano, you should review Sturgill SImpson's new album A Sailor's Guide to Earth. Hes got a traditional Country sound mixed with some serious 60s soul r&b grooves and psychedelic rock. It's great, would like to know what you think sir.
The more I listen to this record, the more I like it. It's kind of a surprise to hear something so similar to the sounds I discovered back in '92 with albums like Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted and Sebadoh - Bakesale. It's a weird time for indie rock and all rock music in general at a time you don't hear very little rock music on the mainstream airwaves. Great record and I hope to hear more from these guys. I agree w/ your point on drawing from influences - I think more Pavement than Velv UG; and definitely some Gang of 4.
You went from saying "they're doing a better job of channeling their influences" to "they're drowning in the influences" in a matter of seconds with no explanation to that juxtaposition. Seeming pretty contradictory here Fantano.
It’s not a contradiction. You can improve upon one of your big songwriting weaknesses and still have it be a big weakness. Because improvement doesn’t mean that you’ve perfected something, just that you’ve gotten at least slightly better at it. Hypothetically, you can improve at a certain thing, and still be awful at it, since you can go from being extremely awful to just moderately awful
Hi, Anthony Fantano I don't know if you'll read this. I doubt it pertains to the actual video at hand, but have you heard American Football's self - titled? I'm curious to hear your thoughts on it, it's one of my favorite albums.
The bonus track is my favorite track!! Check it out- it's called "Already Dead." Curious to hear what you might think of the instrumental break with a built in yoga-esque meditation lol
Good review, seems like a fairly interesting album and the influences they have are ones I like so I may have to look into it. By the way, do you think you could cover Stevie wonder or Bob Marley in a future classic albums episode? Like say songs in the key of life or catch a fire?
+estala Não assumi que ele conhecesse, tenho perfeita noção do quão fechado ele está dentro do panorama musical mais americano, mas esta sempre a tempo de passar a conhecer coisas novas e com qualidade.
great review Anthony, you echo many of the thoughts I have of the album. I think I just like it a bit more than you do because I am not so familiar with their influences. I should go back. one quick note, Andrew isn't the vocalist for Dust, it's Austin on that track.
Is there another way to enter this giveaway? Cymbal is only on iPhone so us android/non smartphone users can't download the app. I'd love to follow you on the app, but I can't :'(
You should review Sunset Sons debut album Very Rarely Say Die. Not sure if it's your bag at all but I'd love to hear your opinion on it, they seem like a promising new band.
TL;DR: Review self-titled album Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness (2015) Genre: Pop, a little bit of synth Hey! I hope you can review the self-titled album Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness and give him a chance, he's an absolute legend in my books. He's been making music for 15 years and has suffered leukamia partway through his career. The album may be a year old, but I still listen to it all the time and I always check him on Twitter or whatever to see if he's making a new album. He's so amazing live too and from what professional reviews there are on MetaCritic he has a nice 70. So yup, this is a long shot, but I would love for someone to finally give him his well deserved attention.
good review! I think after a brief listen, that as for artsy and interesting rock it's pretty solid but not as off beat as you would think. Personally this band doesn't do anything for me sonically but I can appreciate their efforts.
my wife left me anthony
+Elliot Parker nice
+Elliot Parker you'll always get to see your wife's son, hang in there pal
y'all are even steven now
It's a high 8 to a 9 for me. Some of the best songwriting in rock and roll today.
Christopher Maxie II better than the new one too
Parquet Courts is cool. They're influenced a lot by Beefheart, Velvet Undergroud, and Pavement, all of whom I love
I hate to be that guy, but Andrew Savage didn't sing some of these songs that you said he did. Austin sang "One Man No City" and a few others actually. Also this was the first album where everyone was supposed to write songs and contributed. I think it deserved at least an 8

I saw parquet courts the other night and Andrew Savage signed my copy of Human Performance! They are awesome!!
This album is thumbs up for me as well. Good Silver Jews comparison. I also hear a bit of Elvis Costello in their influences. They wear their influences but not really on their sleeve. I feel like they take a lot of good things from 90's indie rock yet they have a pretty fresh sound.
Heard that massively on Berlin got blurry
Review Deakin's "Sleep Cycle". Pretty damn good, "Good House" is a jam.

Jacob Pitts literally stopped listening to Madvillainy to watch this video.
You went from saying "they're doing a better job of channeling their influences" to "they're drowning in the influences" in a matter of seconds with no explanation to that juxtaposition. Seeming pretty contradictory here Fantano.
he did say each track has a diff gear no?

9/10 for me
Austin Brown sings dust.
YUNORESEARCH?
This is definitely my favorite album of the year thus far. Also, the bassist Sean Yeaton is the one that sings on, "I was just here".
"Drawing too much on VU"? Are you nuts, Fantano? As if "sounds too much like VU" is a valid criticism. More, more, more! Thanks for the review!
