I've been riding and wrenching on my bikes since the early 80's and this is the clearest and cleanest explanation of how to do fork seals I've seen! I too build my own tools so i LOVED that large allen wrench DIY tip (i use a giant welded nut on a bolt for my GSXR front axle removal tool). I've always paid the pro's for suspension work, but I'm ready to take on a ZR750S in the garage now! Thank you! 👍

Delboy. Thank you for giving me the confidence to replace the forks seals and a set of bushes on my FJR1300. And I went on to replace a stanchion and seals on my GPZ900. wow tools in general are expensive and the only thing i dont have is the 17 alan key but thanks for the tip on making one.i would of never thought of it in a million years.thanks a lot man
darren legg Hi Darren, yeah, simple little fix eh?? I used to make 24mm allan keys out of huge chassis bolts when I was a bus fitter, we needed them for the sump plugs on bus engines... mainly cos the SnapOn man offere a 24mm socket mounted allan key, but it was £70!! So you know how it is, you get busy with the blow torch !

I replaced the seals on my '82 Suzuki gs1100e using a length of plastic pipe that fit precisely as a driver. I started replacing the seals on a friend's '89 750 katana. When I went to drive in the upper bushing I realized my pipe was too small in diameter to fit the newer bike's upper tubes. Your solution to this problem is both simple and elegant. I cannot wait to try it tomorrow as soon as the local Home Depot opens. Thanks for saving me a lot of time and anguish.

I Have finally found a good DIY video on forks. Normally I just come across the rich guys with all their drivers and torque wrenches and half "ass" explanations or just being to rough with their fork. Thanks Moonfleet41 (Absolutely Brilliant)

Just recently rebuild my first set of forks on a 1988 Kawasaki ZX10 after watching your vid. I cant believe just how easy it was, i have always taken my bikes to the dealers when it has come to fork problems. I could have saved a fortune.

Haven't see the question here, but on the PVC pipe for 39mm tubes (1.5"+) should I buy 1 3/4" PVC or 2" PVC? Not sure how much play you need in them before I waste my time going to hardware store. The sort of thing we hope to find on this platform but seldom seem to get. What can I say. You are a top lad. I replaced a set of fork oil seal and dust seals on a cbr 929 today and used your seal driver system as I did not have a driver kit and shop was not open it Monday to buy a set (today is Saturday) what can I say it was so simple to make and do. And very strong. So much so I have put both plastic tubes in my tool box, no point spending £80 on a set when your system works spot on. And I have every tool going in one of the big big tool chests so love to buy tools. This was the first set of proper up side down forks I have done, as never had to do a set before surprisingly. And I strip bikes for a living. Really good tip and even better I had a bit of the same pipe in my lock up. IT WORKED PERFECTLY . Grate tip I would have sorted something out, but when another biker has sorted it and shares the info with the rest of us, saves a lot of messing around. TOP LAD Thanks

Before i watched this video i was poised with my finger on the buy it now button on ebay for a £50 seal tool, i do a fair bit of plumbing with my job & that is a top tip with the waste pipe & you have saved me a fortune plus a very easy to follow "how to". BRILLIANT !!!!!
I just want to say thanks a billion for this great video, and the whole string of vids that you supply us DIY'ers with! I just bought an '03 Indian Chief Roadmaster last fall, and one fork started leaking this spring. I got on my trusty youtube to see what I could find. After watching a couple of boring and sort-of helpful videos, I landed on this one, and boy, am I glad I did. I'm a retired union Ironworker from the Ozarks about an hour south of St. Louis, Missouri, and I am one who believes that sometimes, when you pay a lot for repairs, you get too little. A "professional" repair ends up being a professional crappy job, which leaves you to clean up the mess, not to mention being out the bucks. So- thanks for this video and all the rest of them. I'm sure I'll be watching you and telling as many of my buddies about your helpful, interesting and entertaining site from here on out. We just load up the basics to help our fellow bikes around the world... it seems that the general atmosphere of all bikers knowing how to fix and repair their bikes is a long dead thing of the past... in the modern computer age vehicles just work reliably ...until something wears out... and that's where professionals jump in and make a killing! It's up to us to share our knowledge and reach out to save ourselves the expenses we can't afford... sadly we have no access to an Indian motorcycle, they're almost un-seen here in the UK and those that are here, are the property of well heeled individuals who can afford to pay the main dealer! But things like fork seals are not usually model specific as with most of the things we load up, they are just general house-keeping, which many different bikes can use! As with all our amazing viewers from the USA, we would really love to meet you, got for a ride, share a beer and a yarn... some day when our ship comes in, we have a mad plan to rent a huge RV and tour the US for a year! I had to use a sharpened (using box cutter) wooden broom handle to get the damper free on my Yamaha 2012 Fz6R. I did not have much luck with sudden jolt on the damper bolt, the damper and bolt kept going round n round :( Just wanted to put this out there for DIYers looking for alternatives

Just finished doing the forks on my XT500. Used your plastic pipe driver idea, it worked very well. I also used your bolt idea for the nut in the top of the forks. I used a short bolt with a two lock nuts, rather that bending a long bolt. Thanks for a excellent and simple approach to replacing fork seals
I just want to say...Thank You!!!. I had never tackled any job like this before, but your video gave me the confidence to do it. I don't have a garage or any special tools. My left fork seal was leaking badly on my 2002 Honda Shadow Spirit 1100 and I didn't want to spend the hundreds of dollars it would have cost to have it done in the shop. I decided to do both forks and to put Progressive springs in at the same time. I started last Saturday morning and finished around dusk. Took it for a 30 minute test ride and all is good. No evident oil seepage (I purposely took it on some very poor roads to exercise the forks) and the handling is very stable. How much it was to do with the new springs versus the clean Honda SS 10W oil is up for debate. The smelly, black fish oil that came out of the forks was disgusting. Again, thanks...your videos are among the best I have come across.

Glad i stumbled on this video. I've not been riding long and don't know much about fixing bikes. Noticed my left fork is leaking today when changing the headlights. Been a little concerned about the repair bill but this dont look too hard of a job to do thanks to the quick and simple lesson. Thanks

As we are on lock down most garages are shut, I'm not desperate to fix my seals put but as my car is buggered now, it is a viable option. Thanks mate. Great video Delboy. It is well produced and full of great tips and shop practice. I need to replace the fork seals in my ST1100 and your video was perfect! I have the OEM Honda shop manual and was ready to disassemble the cartridge in the right leg. You showed me that wasn't necessary. I'm sure that saved me a lot of heartache. Thanks for uploading this video - absolutely excellent! I have carried out quite a few D.I.Y jobs on my motorbikes over the years but never changed a set of fork seals. Your video showed how to do this in a clear and logical way. I had bought a fork seal driver but ended up using your waste pipe method and it worked a treat! Good morning, hope it's as nice a day weather wise as it is here in sunny Norfolk. I would like to thank you for your instructional video's. I have returned to the world of bike's after over 25 years, inspired by my teenage son and I have bought myself a VFR750, it needs some fettling and a dam good service but with the aid of you and Penny, following your video's has encouraged me and given me the confidence to crack on with jobs like fork leg seals, head bearing's and checking the wiring harness with a tester and other little checks that I would normally have taken the bike to a dealer to get done. I reckon I have saved myself several hundred pounds and gained some great knowledge about my bike and I would just like to say a great big thank you for bringing my shed and helping. Great videos with no flannel and high quality pictures Keep up the great work. Off to rebuild the forks now and hopefully back on the road by lunch time.

I came here because when I cleaned the forks on my scooter which covered by bodywork I found a damaged dust cap looks like the result of a previous bodger repair but there is no oil leak I just need to replace the dust cap so this video was very helpful thank you especially the tool improvisation ideas excellent!

I just replaced the seals on my 37 year old KZ750E. I bought it new and do to my job I put in the barn 32 years ago. I have a o5 Tri Sprint. I can't thank you enough. It took me a day to gather the stuff and get it apart. The second day I did one leg with great care and cleaning everyothg. The next day I did the other in two hours. I got a length of pvc from the hardware store and a muffler clamp. Perfect. Now I have no fear of rebuilding the forks at all.

I finally found a very useful training clip on seal replacement. The damper bolt install is what I'm most interested in. A local Harley dealership as with a private motorcycle shop both mentioned using a air ratchet. I was bewildered since I knew an air ratchet was way overboard. I think adding Teflon tape to the damper bolt with a little more hand torque than instructed here will do. Thanks for an excellent clip.
Thanks mate.. yeah, sometimes those bottom bolts can be real tight and have to come off with air tools... its no big deal, but most of those i deal with are ok to snap open with a hand wrench, as long as you leave the cap on so the spring holds the thing still enough to crack it..!
Thanks to your video. I had the confidence to do the seals on my cx500. They were a little different as can be expected and were really quiet easy. The local shop wanted £90 to do them. But by watching your video a couple of times it cost me less than a tenner. So thank you and keep the vids coming. And if I ever meet you I owe you a pint.

Thanks especially for explaining where to look for fork damage from an accident. (It is at the last 5' of the video). I have a left fork that leaks a bit and I know the bike was once dropped on the left side. I have felt for months that something up front was a bit off. Your fine explanation prepares me to look carefully when I work on the fork.
would have never though of a pipe clamp and some pvc pipe to seat bushings or a seal . A very informative video. thank you very much for taking the time too show how to do this very doable and much cheaper than paying someone else.

I've been riding and wrenching on my bikes since the early 80's and this is the clearest and cleanest explanation of how to do fork seals I've seen! I too build my own tools so i LOVED that large allen wrench DIY tip (i use a giant welded nut on a bolt for my GSXR front axle removal tool).
I've always paid the pro's for suspension work, but I'm ready to take on a ZR750S in the garage now! Thank you! 👍

My SV650s (1999) fork seal is leaking and I''ve just ordered the kit (Oil seals, Dust seals and Fork oil) off the net.

wow tools in general are expensive and the only thing i dont have is the 17 alan key but thanks for the tip on making one.i would of never thought of it in a million years.thanks a lot man
darren legg Hi Darren, yeah, simple little fix eh?? I used to make 24mm allan keys out of huge chassis bolts when I was a bus fitter, we needed them for the sump plugs on bus engines... mainly cos the SnapOn man offere a 24mm socket mounted allan key, but it was £70!! So you know how it is, you get busy with the blow torch !

I have the same fears, when I have to do something never done.
I replaced the seals on my '82 Suzuki gs1100e using a length of plastic pipe that fit precisely as a driver. I started replacing the seals on a friend's '89 750 katana. When I went to drive in the upper bushing I realized my pipe was too small in diameter to fit the newer bike's upper tubes. Your solution to this problem is both simple and elegant. I cannot wait to try it tomorrow as soon as the local Home Depot opens. Thanks for saving me a lot of time and anguish.
We are a small family run motorcycle training school in the north west of the UK and we've just followed your steps for replacing the fork seals. I Have finally found a good DIY video on forks. Normally I just come across the rich guys with all their drivers and torque wrenches and half "ass" explanations or just being to rough with their fork. Thanks Moonfleet41 (Absolutely Brilliant)

Just recently rebuild my first set of forks on a 1988 Kawasaki ZX10 after watching your vid. I cant believe just how easy it was, i have always taken my bikes to the dealers when it has come to fork problems. I could have saved a fortune.

Haven't see the question here, but on the PVC pipe for 39mm tubes (1.5"+) should I buy 1 3/4" PVC or 2" PVC? Not sure how much play you need in them before I waste my time going to hardware store. What can I say. You are a top lad. I replaced a set of fork oil seal and dust seals on a cbr 929 today and used your seal driver system as I did not have a driver kit and shop was not open it Monday to buy a set (today is Saturday) what can I say it was so simple to make and do. And very strong. So much so I have put both plastic tubes in my tool box, no point spending £80 on a set when your system works spot on. And I have every tool going in one of the big big tool chests so love to buy tools. This was the first set of proper up side down forks I have done, as never had to do a set before surprisingly. And I strip bikes for a living. Really good tip and even better I had a bit of the same pipe in my lock up. IT WORKED PERFECTLY . Grate tip I would have sorted something out, but when another biker has sorted it and shares the info with the rest of us, saves a lot of messing around. TOP LAD Thanks

I just bought an '03 Indian Chief Roadmaster last fall, and one fork started leaking this spring. I got on my trusty youtube to see what I could find. After watching a couple of boring and sort-of helpful videos, I landed on this one, and boy, am I glad I did. I'm a retired union Ironworker from the Ozarks about an hour south of St. Louis, Missouri, and I am one who believes that sometimes, when you pay a lot for repairs, you get too little. A "professional" repair ends up being a professional crappy job, which leaves you to clean up the mess, not to mention being out the bucks. So- thanks for this video and all the rest of them. I'm sure I'll be watching you and telling as many of my buddies about your helpful, interesting and entertaining site from here on out. (Got any access to Gilroy Indians ('99-04) you could work on?) :) You are now welcome in our humble home in Park Hills, MO if you ever make it into this neck of the woods. We just load up the basics to help our fellow bikes around the world... it seems that the general atmosphere of all bikers knowing how to fix and repair their bikes is a long dead thing of the past... in the modern computer age vehicles just work reliably ...until something wears out... and that's where professionals jump in and make a killing! It's up to us to share our knowledge and reach out to save ourselves the expenses we can't afford... sadly we have no access to an Indian motorcycle, they're almost un-seen here in the UK and those that are here, are the property of well heeled individuals who can afford to pay the main dealer! But things like fork seals are not usually model specific as with most of the things we load up, they are just general house-keeping, which many different bikes can use!
As with all our amazing viewers from the USA, we would really love to meet you, got for a ride, share a beer and a yarn... some day when our ship comes in, we have a mad plan to rent a huge RV and tour the US for a year! I had to use a sharpened (using box cutter) wooden broom handle to get the damper free on my Yamaha 2012 Fz6R. I did not have much luck with sudden jolt on the damper bolt, the damper and bolt kept going round n round :( Just wanted to put this out there for DIYers looking for alternatives

Just finished doing the forks on my XT500. Used your plastic pipe driver idea, it worked very well. I also used your bolt idea for the nut in the top of the forks. I used a short bolt with a two lock nuts, rather that bending a long bolt.

I just want to say...Thank You!!!. I had never tackled any job like this before, but your video gave me the confidence to do it. I don't have a garage or any special tools. My left fork seal was leaking badly on my 2002 Honda Shadow Spirit 1100 and I didn't want to spend the hundreds of dollars it would have cost to have it done in the shop. I decided to do both forks and to put Progressive springs in at the same time. I started last Saturday morning and finished around dusk. Took it for a 30 minute test ride and all is good. No evident oil seepage (I purposely took it on some very poor roads to exercise the forks) and the handling is very stable. How much it was to do with the new springs versus the clean Honda SS 10W oil is up for debate. The smelly, black fish oil that came out of the forks was disgusting. Again, thanks...your videos are among the best I have come across.

Glad i stumbled on this video. I've not been riding long and don't know much about fixing bikes. Noticed my left fork is leaking today when changing the headlights. Been a little concerned about the repair bill but this dont look too hard of a job to do thanks to the quick and simple lesson. Thanks

I didn't think this was a job I could do but your video shows that it's certainly a possibility. As we are on lock down most garages are shut, I'm not desperate to fix my seals put but as my car is buggered now, it is a viable option.

Great video Delboy. It is well produced and full of great tips and shop practice. I need to replace the fork seals in my ST1100 and your video was perfect! I have the OEM Honda shop manual and was ready to disassemble the cartridge in the right leg. You showed me that wasn't necessary. I'm sure that saved me a lot of heartache. Your video showed how to do this in a clear and logical way. I had bought a fork seal driver but ended up using your waste pipe method and it worked a treat! Good morning, hope it's as nice a day weather wise as it is here in sunny Norfolk. I would like to thank you for your instructional video's. I have returned to the world of bike's after over 25 years, inspired by my teenage son and I have bought myself a VFR750, it needs some fettling and a dam good service but with the aid of you and Penny, following your video's has encouraged me and given me the confidence to crack on with jobs like fork leg seals, head bearing's and checking the wiring harness with a tester and other little checks that I would normally have taken the bike to a dealer to get done. I reckon I have saved myself several hundred pounds and gained some great knowledge about my bike and I would just like to say a great big thank you for bringing my shed and helping. Great videos with no flannel and high quality pictures Keep up the great work. Off to rebuild the forks now and hopefully back on the road by lunch time.

I came here because when I cleaned the forks on my scooter which covered by bodywork I found a damaged dust cap looks like the result of a previous bodger repair but there is no oil leak I just need to replace the dust cap so this video was very helpful thank you especially the tool improvisation ideas excellent!

Wanted to thank you for this information. I've recently acquired a 99 Vstar 1100 with one leaky fork seal . I've not had this problem before and plan to do it myself. Now I feel confident in an unfamiliar task. You're a big help brother and I thank you. Tree

I just replaced the seals on my 37 year old KZ750E. I bought it new and do to my job I put in the barn 32 years ago. Now that I retired I'm giving to my 24 year old son as I bought another bike so we can ride together. Thank you Moonfleet41 for the memories we will have with your help. I'm grateful.

I have a o5 Tri Sprint. I can't thank you enough. It took me a day to gather the stuff and get it apart. The second day I did one leg with great care and cleaning everyothg. The next day I did the other in two hours. I got a length of pvc from the hardware store and a muffler clamp. Perfect. Now I have no fear of rebuilding the forks at all.

I finally found a very useful training clip on seal replacement. The damper bolt install is what I'm most interested in. A local Harley dealership as with a private motorcycle shop both mentioned using a air ratchet. I was bewildered since I knew an air ratchet was way overboard. I think adding Teflon tape to the damper bolt with a little more hand torque than instructed here will do. Thanks for an excellent clip.
Thanks mate.. yeah, sometimes those bottom bolts can be real tight and have to come off with air tools... its no big deal, but most of those i deal with are ok to snap open with a hand wrench, as long as you leave the cap on so the spring holds the thing still enough to crack it..!

They were a little different as can be expected and were really quiet easy. The local shop wanted £90 to do them.
But by watching your video a couple of times it cost me less than a tenner.

Thanks for this video! Forks on my bike need doing and watching this is giving me the confidence to give it a go myself. got charged 230 quid on an old bike when it needed doing, will be £40 for all the bits to do it myself!

Can I just say a huge thank you for producing this video and I must say an absolutely top tip for making the seal driving tool. Saved me a fortune when replacing the fork seals on my ZX9R, gave me loads of pleasure tinkering in the garage and a good excuse for some quality father/son time with my Dad who doesn't ride bikes but loves engineering.

Thanks especially for explaining where to look for fork damage from an accident. (It is at the last 5' of the video). I have a left fork that leaks a bit and I know the bike was once dropped on the left side. I have felt for months that something up front was a bit off. Your fine explanation prepares me to look carefully when I work on the fork.

would have never though of a pipe clamp and some pvc pipe to seat bushings or a seal .

Seals changed on a 05 Honda CBF600. Took me forever to get the new seals seated but your techniques worked a treat!
