  • In this video Vicki takes you on a tour of Berkhamsted Castle, Hertfordshire.
Though not well known, the castle is actually the site of one of the most significant moments in English history. No more than a ruin today, plans are in place to redevelop the site, building a visitor centre to showcase more of the castle's important past.

The emphasis is on the 'Ber'.
Interestingly in nearby Chesham you can find a 'Berkhampstead Road'. Not sure who it was spelled like that; maybe an admin error or maybe something more historic. No idea.

The 'French' Normans were actually Vikings from Denmark, who held the area now known as Normandy. They were granted the land to stop further incursions into an emerging France. It's a fascinating era to study.

Tattershall has a castle and an old railway station on the old Lincolnshire Loop Line which you could talk about, Coningsby has a large church with a clock with only one hand and an RAF base where many of the WW2 planes are kept (including one of the last 2 remaining Lancasters that can fly)
The two villages are full of history. I think that Vicki would love it!

These days, the spelling has settled on Berkhamsted, but that was only actually finally decided on in 1937. Prior to that, there are dozens of different spellings - Berkhampstead, Berkhamsteed, Berkampsted, etc, etc - and those do persist in some places, either just through longevity* or copying older sources.
More interestingly, it's a name which has a non-intuitive pronunciation, and which isn't quite in common with the standard "rules" of pronunciation (nor well enough known that people learn it as an exception). The local pronunciation is closer to Berkum-sted. (Or, for people who can read IPA: /ˈbɜːrkəmstɛd/ )
    * For example, a surviving** "Town Class" narrowboat, built 1936, has its name spelt "Berkhampstead", which was a valid spelling at the time.
** Although, being pedantic, it's probably the case the original "Berkhampstead" was scrapped by mistake and "Ayr" was renamed to cover up the error.
