But first and foremost, Scotland a was willing and prodigious imperialiser. By the end of the abolition of slavery in the British Empire, a full 25% of slaves were owned by Scots, despite forming only 10% of the UK's population (Scottish-owned plantations were also notourisly brutal, with a life expectancy of just 4 years for slaves). Modern Scottish Nationalism, like all nationalisms, was a 19th Century invention, taking romantic parts of Highland culture and transplanting them onto Lowland Scotland, which had always maintained a distinct culture and identity. And of course, it is far easier to form nationalism by spinning a tail of victimhood and repression, in this case harking back to Medieval wars in the 13th Century.
