    The "Flower of Scotland" refers to the Scottish army which defeated the invading English army under Edward ll at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 and sent them back to England to "think again" about trying to conquer Scotland. It was the decisive battle of the wars of independence which ensured that Scotland remained an independent nation until voluntarily uniting with England in 1707. If you think the American Declaration of Independence is something special, you should read the Declaration of Arbroath. It was written in 1320 and is Scotland's assertion of nationhood . It says (translated from Latin).
    "As long as 100 of us remain alive, we will never submit to the dominion of England. For it is not for glory, riches or honour that we fight, but for freedom itself which no good man lays down but with his life ."

      @@colinanderson3834 It was voluntary in that the Scottish parliament voted for it, granted that it was not representative of the Scottish people. The song is about the spirit to resist tyranny. The song never mentions England because King Edward of England was as much a tyrant in England. The song also promotes peaceful resistance. The song talks of the warriors who fought bloody battles to expel invaders but goes on to say " those days are past and in the past they must remain". Violence was the only way in the past but there is a better peaceful way now.

    If you want to see a truly amazing rendition of this song then watch the 1990 Grand Slam decider between Scotland and England. The Scottish team didn't just sing along, they absolutely belted it out with passion. England were big favourites to win that match, but the Scots got the victory.
    I recall one of the England players talking about it some years later, and saying when he saw the raw emotion of the Scots as they sung the anthem he suddenly realised they had a game on their hand.

    Hi Ryan, this song was written in the mid 1960s by the late Roy Williamson, who was a member of the popular Scottish folk trio/duo, The Corries, and originally had three verses, of which only two have been adopted as our as yet unofficial national anthem - played at international sporting events where Scotland is one of the teams and preferred by most to the official one, which is God Save the King - and not least because England tend to use it as if it were solely theirs! Here is as performed by The Corries: ua-cam.com/video/XiyLuv3GSs4/v-deo.html
    It refers to the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, when the Scots led by King Robert the Bruce managed to overcome a much larger English army led by King Edward II (of England, as the United Kingdom has only existed since 1707), at the location just south of Stirling. Hence the words, "O Flower of Scotland (meaning the Scots army), when will we see your like again? You fought and died for, our wee bit hill and glen (wee is the Scots word for small, and glen is the word we use in place of valley - in which most of the Scottish Highland People still lived at that time); and stood against them - King Edward's Army, then sent them homeward, to think again (about the wisdom of invading Scotland!) Unfortunately, they didn't do so very well as there were many more battles between England and Scotland over land, territory, religion, kings and politics - which many might say is again going on today, as the UK Government is refusing to allow the devolved Scottish one from holding a referendum on whether the two countries should again become independent of one another - for which the polls tell us there is currently a majority of Scottish people in favour of!
    The problem is that the main UK-wide parties are unionist and have lost most of their Scottish supporters over the past few decades, thanks to the emergence of the pro-independence Scottish National Party, whom many of them now vote for instead. Despite having been the third-largest party in the House of Commons for the past decade or so, their members' influence there isn't as great as it should be, largely because the big two keep revising parliamentary seat boundaries within England, giving it more MPs than it used to have, to make up for the seats in Scotland that they've lost; and they refuse to introduce any form of proportional representation as they'd both stand to lose out by doing so! Scotland is also pro-European Union and voted heavily against leaving it in the UK referendum that led to that taking place - and with ever-widening political and cultural differences, the majority of Scots now feel there is a lack of democracy within the UK government, as they (and Welsh, and Northern Irish nationalist) minority parties will always remain that at Westminster, owing to the continued lack of PR.

    • @babybear9443
      @babybear9443 Рік тому +6

      They had the 'once in a lifetime' referendum. The people voted NO. End of story. You can't keep voting until you get the answer you want. That's not how it works. Scotland voted to stay as a part of the UK. The UK as a whole voted to leave the EU. That's how democracy works.

      @paulharvey9149 Рік тому +18

      @@babybear9443 That is true, but the government of rhe day promised that we would remain in the EU and didn't need to vote to leave the UK in order to remain in the EU... Ten minutes later, they changed their minds! Hence we should also have the opportunity to change our minds!

    • @Thurgosh_OG
      @Thurgosh_OG Рік тому +3

      You were doing so well with this until you made up the stuff about a second referendum. We voted to stay in the union and at no time did many Scots think EU was a consideration of that vote because we don't care. We voted to stay and that's the end of it. And the other thing you've made up here is that apart from two SNP funded polls, all of the rest show us Scottish people wanting to stay in the Union. SNP's illegal attempts to circumvent the law of the nation have failed and will continue to do so, until they stop this nonsense, when voted out at the next election.

    We in the UK are fairly laid back about not needing an “official” national anthem, and not needing a law to say what it is. Scotland sports teams have used various different songs as national anthems at the Commonwealth Games, and rugby and football international matches. They sometimes use “Scotland the Brave” or “ Highland Cathedral” but “ Flower of Scotland” is by far the most common.

    I once went to an R.E.M concert. They were performing at Stirling Castle. Michael Stipe started singing 'Swing Low Sweet Chariot' and in response the entire crowd, without missing a beat, burst into 'Flower of Scotland' 🤣. Well, Stirling Castle was the reason the Battle of Bannockburn happened in the first place, so it made some sort of sense🤣I don't know what R.E.M made of it though. I think it's a sort of pavlovian response - get more than fifty Scots gathered together, 'Flower of Scotland's' gonnae be sung.

    It's got another verse and chorus in between. You should get the full version and listen to it. Google The Corries Flower of Scotland make sure its with lyrics (Scottish words we don''t say sent them 'homewards to think again' - we sing "and sent them hamewords tae think again"
    Final verse,
    Those hills are bare now, and autumn leaves lie thick lie thick and still, for land that is lost now, but oh so dearly held, and stood against him.....AGAINST WHO? Proud Edwards Army and sent him hamewards tae think again.

    "Yer wee bit hill and glen" is like a metaphor for freedom. Our hills (Bens/Glens(Ben Nevis/Glen Nevis(Ancient Scottish/Gaelic)/Mountains) and Glens (Valleys/Low Lands between the Glens/Bens/Mountains) i.e. fought and died for our land/mountains/valleys or the freedom of aforementioned hills and glens.

    "Your wee bit hill and glen" this translates best as "your little patch of hill and valley". It refers to the fact that the people were fighting to protect their home and get rid of a foreign aggressor. Between 1296 and 1385, England invaded Scotland 16 times, trying to conquer it. This period is known as the Wars of Scottish Independence.

      @henrykartoffelsalat8578 5 місяців тому +1

      @@Notherenotever Not that I've ever heard of but there might have been. The issue with the First two parts is, that one of them talks about the Geography of the German Kaiserreich, which is just no longer up-to-date and the other one is too easily missunderstood as Germany is better than anything Else (it actually says Germany should be our highest goal, which is perfectly reasonable in the historical context). The third part is the one you're allowed to sing and there's really nothing wrong with it, although Most people think it doesn't Sound as good as for example the DDR's hymn (which is a whole other Story). As for not singing at all, that's not actually true. German's just have ridiculously Low national pride and there really aren't too many opportunities to sing where it doesn't feel weird. Again, whole other Story.
