Falsetttos has always been one of my favorite shows, not least of because when I saw it, my partner was then in the last months of his life. This show encapsulates so much of what I was going through at the time. It will always hold a special place in my heart...
oh god, I'm so sorry, if I'm getting correct, your LGBTQ as well. I'm just a 17-year-old but this song hits me hard too but in q different way I cannot describe its truly a beautiful piece of art
Not me crying at a UA-cam comment 🥺 I’ve never even heard this song before and for this to be part of its introduction makes me like it even more. Genuinely, thank you for sharing.
Another line that is just absolutely heart-shattering is "Once I was told that good men get better with age. We're just gonna skip that stage." It gets me every time
my favorite is "i'd like to believe that i'd do it again and again and again" especially considering in the beginning he says "and never never never never never do it over again"
There is something to be said about sad self-reflection songs. William Finn perfectly captures Marvin's confusing/sad question. It destroys me every time Marvin thinks about how his life would've been different without Whizzer. Theatre is supposed to provide insight on the human condition, and I just can't help but think of this song (and musical (also among others)) when looking for examples.
TheMavieneT agreed, always makes me sad to see those sellout commercial musicals. This is what theater ought to be. It should make us look closer to the human condition and what it means to be alive.
I swear Michael Rupert and William Finn have made me cry more than any other people in the world. This is so beautiful and wonderful. Thank you for sharing this.
i find it kinda funny that Michael Rupert was Marvin, and he was also Calahan (i dont think i spelt that right but i dont feel like checking whoops) in Legally Blonde, and now in the 2016 falsettos revival, Christian Borle is Marvin, and he was Emmett in Legally Blonde lol
I have no idea if this was on purpose or not but the fact that Michael doesn’t really look at or acknowledge Stephen while he’s singing while Stephen actually does look at Michael mAKES THIS SO MUCH MORE PAINFUL
I was lucky enough to see you perform in Falsettoland at the Lucille Lortel in I think 1992. As a young gay guy this number broke my heart into a thousand pieces. It still does, and I love it.
Even after so many years, the chemistry between these two and their delivery produces a version that always brings a lump to my throat. Successors to the roles have come extremely close, but Michael Rupert and Stephen Bogardus set the bar!
Falsettos will forever be in my top ten shows! These men bring these characters to life even after such a long break from the show. It is lovely and emotional performance. Truly amazing!
Your velvet voice makes me melt. Seriously. And this song makes me miserable. Seriously. Thank you for making me miserable in such a velvet-ish way. It feels good. Seriously.
i know nothing about falsettos but i found this while looking for legally blonde clips and good god this video has been making me sooo emotional recently😭 i’m queer, but even without being queer this makes me think of my friends so much i guess. 💝:( i just love them sooo so much!!! i hope i never live on an earth where they die before i do. i want to hold them all forever n forever. thank you michael rupert for your absolutely beautiful voice🌷🌷🌷 maybe i’ll get into falsettos sometime…
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for posting this! I don't know how I never saw this show, but I have the entire 3 soundtracks memorized this song always hits me hard! I wish someone had a copy of the show!!!! I am against taping in theaters, but I do like to watch some that I haven't seen. (I'm a BIG hypocrite! lol) Thanks again!
LieslJones59 I have to say I really think that Andrew Rannells and Christian Borle were worthy predecessors to these parts, and fit their roles just as perfectly
Unpopular opinion: These guys are great, truely. But I still believe that Christian Borle and Andrew Rannells kind of brought a new level to this song/performance that these two didn't

Brilliant and heartbreaking. The line, "Yes I'd beg or steal or borrow if I could hold you for one hour more" destroys me every time I hear it.

I'm just in love with Michael Rupert's voice. I can't explain it, there is just this quality about it that melts me.
Facts, glad to see were all on the same page
Ditto!!!
It's so soft and classy.
very classy, that’s what i love about it.
“once i was told that good men get better with age... we’re just gonna skip that stage” that line gets me every damn time

The piano at “who the hell then threw this curve” and “we’re just gonna skip that stage” kills me inside every time.
Straight or gay, this song should touch the hearts of anyone with a capacity for love and the sacrifices it brings.
I swear Michael Rupert and William Finn have made me cry more than any other people in the world. This is so beautiful and wonderful. Thank you for sharing this.
+Todd Page Ditto. We might be soulmates lol :)
Wait until you see Christian Borle and Andrews Rannells sing this song... you may rethink that statement
Right?! Damn you, Bill!
Michael Rupert still has a stellar voice. He breaks my heart.

Michael Rupert actually recommended that Christian got the role of Marvin

In 2003 they were also in Elegies: a Song Cycle together, another show written by Bill Finn

Aaron it's cause he's dead. Whizzer is dead and Marvin is singing to his memory.
Michael Rupert has one of the best voices on Broadway, no doubt.
That finale was even sadder than when mendel sings it oh BOY

It gets better with age.....great performance.
we’re just gonna skip that stage
Fortunate enough to have seen original productions - with both of these great performers.
i hope you cherish those memories. im so sad i'll never see a production like this in today's world. the revival doesnt come close to the original
i would love to be alive to see in trousers 79’ and falsettos 92’

Why am I crying in the club
Damn... I never heard of this before and I'm crying in public... :"(
Them walking off together makes me emotional as if this damn show doesn't make emotional enough
Dang! Maybe that's why Christian was casted as Marvin. They almost have the same tone
Fr like Christian and Michael have very similar voices its uncanny
I'm so looking forward to Falsettos heading back to Broadway!
I saw them do this 5 times in NY --- one of my favorite moments ever in all theatre -- they are amazing
Seriously.
THEY STILL GOT IT!!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I LOVE FALSETTOS🥺😭😭
Saw you two on Broadway doing this number. Made me cry but how beautiful.
The originals!
Their voices are just so perfect, I wish I could give this kind of amazing performance
Jesus. You still got it kid! I saw you on Broadway and I saw at the Mark Taper Forum - this is still insanely good !!!
This song gives me chills everytime

I do t have the links, but the full show with this cast is on UA-cam. Check.

"what would i-" on the floor. bawling. shedding tears.
That performance is just genius!!!
My story...love Falsettos..music stellar..
This is the best version I could find of “What Would I Do” on UA-cam besides the original Falsettos😭😭
Check out the Mandy Patinkin version on here. Pretty darned good as Marvin.
WHY AM I CRYING RIGHT NOW OMG
goddamn it I actually know why I'm crying in the club right now
iconic song. iconic performance. thank you!
I love these two.
Love these handsome men
Stunning!
Perfection.
Lovely. Thanks for posting.
Amazing
No duo has ever portrayed the characters or sung the Finn song's better.
damn it i can’t listen to this song without getting upset
Rupert and Bogardus own these roles and songs! (Everyone else who does them is a "pretender to the throne").
LieslJones59 I have to say I really think that Andrew Rannells and Christian Borle were worthy predecessors to these parts, and fit their roles just as perfectly
Ok boomer
I think both casts were brilliant. I saw this cast on Bway and the revival on Bway HD. Both are excellent.

they sound exactly the same as they did in the original
Nope still heartbreaking
😭
😢😢🥺🥺
they get to be old, which whizzer and martin (at least implied) never got to... what a gorgeous, awful extra level of poignancy
breaking news: callahan was gay
Are they gay or european?
