  • BBC Two has been on air for over 8-and-a-half years, but has it been a success? Members of the public have their say.
In the final edition of Late Night Line-Up, David Attenborough - the controller of BBC Two for seven years, and arguably the person most responsible for its current direction - mounts a rigorous defence of the channel in the face of some piercing questions from Tony Bilbow, Sheridan Morley and Michael Dean.
Attenborough has announced that he is stepping down from his role as BBC director of television programming, to return to programme making.
    Originally broadcast 14 December, 1972.

Wow! Had no idea he was so involved in business direction of BBC 1&2 behind the scenes. What an incredible human

He's a legend! A proper legend. Imagine the world without him. He made flowers interesting for people, and who does that? This human did! Brilliant man, I hope he lives forever.

I could listen to him for hours, his answer regarding society's acceptance based on cultural values in the 1930's versus the 1960's/70's is just as relevant today as it was then.

If someone said "I'm a time traveller and I like it for The Young Ones' I will drop my bacon sandwich. On a more serious note in the 80s and 90s the competition between BBC2 and Channel 4 was fierce and produced the best television I have seen or will ever see.

Hard to believe now but in those days the amount of tv that could be broadcast by channels was legally restricted by the govt because it was genuinely believed that 'too much tv' was 'bad for people' 😂

Even then, very astute, very aware and very much pushing for inclusive even then. Way ahead of his time with a much greater understanding of broadcasting than most. But when given the option of career progress he chooses job satisfaction.

1:14 - Even in 1972 many people still couldn't get BBC 2. You needed a 625 line TV set and a new aerial to pick it up. Even in 1972, there were still millions of homes using the 405 line VHF service which aired just BBC 1 and ITV.

BBC 2 was and is a great channel for documentaries, but funnily enough the best single documentary series ever was World at War, made by ITV.

World at War was made to be sold internationally. It was produced so well because Thames Television knew it would be sold around the world. A whopping £900,000 was it's budget (£12 million in 2023 value) so Thames wouldn't have spent that money over four years, unless they knew they could reap in a fortune in international sales, which they did.

And now BBC Two is basically just BBC One-point-oh, and BBC Four has been relegated to archive.
All the same, Attenborough gets it. A brilliant man.

A bravura performance from Attenborough - the nicest/smartest person alive at the time. Comparing Reith’s video to Attenborough’s here is a discourse analysis for the ages!

Three channels in those days and some people could only get two of them and yet, I bet they just turned the TV off if they found nothing to watch. Sir David was always someone worth listening to. I did watch The Old Grey Whistle Test and I do remember 'Alias Smith And Jones' which I would love to see again. In fact many of the programmes Sir David mentions are classics, I have Civilisation on DVD (got it for a quid in a charity shop) and I shall watch it again. The Six Wives of Henry the Eighth was outstanding as was Elizabeth R with Glenda Jackson. Much better than the tripe today.

Radio was always the big alternative back then. BBC Radio 1, 2, 3 and 4 offered a lot of choice to television.

It's a bit insulting to see some of the interviewers on the panel think that only middle/upper class people would be watching.
My Dad was a Steelworker and loved watching BBC2 especially when it featured many of its fine documentaries and drama serials. I wasn't born until 1977 but I could imagine that my Dad would've been fascinated by Civilisation and The Ascent of Man!

This is back from when there were only 3 channels in the UK, and no video recorders, and you could still put an intelligent discussion programme like this on the (very valuable and limited) airtime. Can you imagine the lead director of programming for a national major network aswering questions like this live on air today?

    • @johnking5174
      @johnking5174 Рік тому

Actually limited air time was freed up in 1972 a bit, when the government finally abolished the stupid restrictions of TV hours.

1:18 - This prat didn't know what he was talking about. Adverts on ITV in 1972 were limited to just 7 minutes per hour, hardly "too many adverts" in my opinion. He would be shocked if he lived in the US, where in 1972 a one hour show could have 16 minutes of adverts.
