Quinn's an influencer. Literally. I think soon as his recommendation went up, we all ran straight into the fire. I def appreciate his taste in books, exactly my genres and literary style
Kudos to Quinn once again. Also I love the old style sci-fi. All science and fiction with minimal personal drama and personality. The story needs to take the foreground, not the characters.

@@listen2me00subjective. But ultimately if ever there was a framework for Dark Forest, this book was it. All the way down to humans committing murder and genocide to prevent others from sending out signals, and trying to go low-tech to avoid the aforementioned.
Really cool book and great story. Characters are a bit repetitive / bland, but the science and the story itself can easily be front and center in this genre. Overall quite well done - I recommend this book. Quinn’s Ideas brought me here. Big thanks to him and the amazing work he does on his channel.
I don't see the characters as bland and the prose is wonderfully flowed with hard scientific techno babble and sonorous poetics appropriate for the subject matter. The part where Sergenti and Isak spend their last moments together always gets me. I have no clue where people are getting "bland characters" from, especially considering the focus is clearly on science and philosophy
@@stevescruby1343 it's my comfort audiobook and I just get alot of joy listening to it. Even with some of the outdated science it's still a beautiful peace. I guess I just take the "Well people are different than us in the future, especially after the end of the world" approach. I think I like the narrators voice despite or because the crunchy audio.
I like this book so far and one thing bothers me about the aliens. They waited until just after humans developed the ability to leave the solar system to strike. That's like using the pull out method as a contraceptive. Can it work? Yes, but there are way better options and similar to the pull out method, it only takes being off by a few seconds to end up letting some seed get past and then you got a bigger problem. Also the inevitable revenge factor seems like a potential deterrent. Something of a galaxy version of assured mutual destruction but instead two interstellar species would be locked in mutual eternal combat neither one ever sure they wiped out the other completely so making starting the war in the first place a mistake, of course you have to be able to escape your spawn location and seed new world's sorta the galaxies version of a country developing nuclear weapons.
This is almost, idea wise, a prequel or whatever to The Three Body Problem in a weird way. If you’ve read the series, you get what I mean. Also, Hyperion by Dan Simmons..😮
A good albeit bleak story. You can see the roots of the Three Body Problem. The Enemy never explain how the Universe came into being...or explore this theme. I thought they followed knowledge?
cassette, VHS, vinyl LP ... it wasn't perfect by a long shot, but the warmth of these recordings remains unmatched by todays cold and efficient compression. aaaah i'm so old ...
Just got done with this incredibly fascinating stuff Will definitely be checking out more hard sci-fi from years gone by. Interesting to see what they predicted back then and compared to what actually came true now. Particularly VR addiction, while I was listening to this I was playing fallout 4 a world I've been visiting obsessively for years now 😆. More interesting to me was the prediction of intelligence boosting pharmaceuticals apparently supposed to have been ready in between 2004 and 2012? Can anybody tell me if those are a thing? I don't think I saw any mentats when I went to CVS yesterday, That's another reference to fallout 4.
Or maybe: a species they can "domesticated/indoctrinate" them as help as they advance side by side... if that is a possibility. But they're gonna need all the help they can get, and practice what they preach.

I’m so glad that I found this video after watching that video! The story was worth the hunt for it.
Am studying screen-writing now and wondering what the best way is to put kind of story on screen without a narrator.

I can definitely see Arthur C.Clark’s influence in this, and how the Three Body Problem was influenced in turn.
it's literally redevouz with rama except they're evil genocidal aliens
It seems that this awaits a big fat juicy sequel. This was my first audio book experience. Excellent!
It's been close to 30 yeara bud
You'd have to strip away the hard science aspects of it, though. The book ending is bleak but also masterful. Human.
Cixin Liu definitely read this book and took a lot of ideas from it.
This truly must have been the framework for the “Three Body Problem”. It’s a shame it hasn’t been mentioned as an inspiration.

Because they’re only barely similar.
