- Gregory Hines and Ann-Margret presenting Stephen Sondheim the Oscar® for Best Original Song for "Sooner or Later" at the 63rd Annual Academy Awards® in 1991 and accepting it on his behalf.
Oscars were still glamorous at this time. Just note the names that are mentioned: Bon Jovi, John Williams, the Godfather and in the audience there is MADONNA sitting next to MICHAEL JACKSON. Nothing gets close these days.

No she didn’t win the Oscar, but that doesn’t mean she was any failure. Highest selling female artist of all time. Rock n Roll Hall of Fame on her first year of eligibility. She has something a lot of Oscar winners wish they had, and it’s more valuable than an award. She has the kind of fame that will last long after she’s gone. Like Judy Garland or Marilyn Monroe, neither won an Oscar. But 50/60 years after they’re gone everyone still knows their names

alex blend~Sadly it’s true, those of us who love her know she writes & produces almost all of her music/art. She rarely even gets recognized for the breadth of her talents. Yes, they don’t nominate, and they certainly don’t give her the award for any song from a movie she’s written & sung (she barely has gotten Grammy accolades that she’s richly deserved). Oscars is such a snobby bunch, well all awards but maybe Golden Globes, which Madonna is the winner of as Best Actress(yeah Best Actress!!). But it’s enraging how they ignore her achievements in so many places and areas. Only when she’s gone will they realize that she’s totally rewritten the book on how to be a female entertainer from start to finish, top to bottom and they all mimic her now, all of them!! She’s the very best the worlds ever seen. Check the Guinness Book of World Records if you think I’m making up that “she is the best” she’s certified as “The Worlds most successful female recording artist in History!!”, no one else is even close in the whole world!
Madonna has written the vast majority of her music though.

I wasn't that impressed by her vocal performance. Yes, she looked every bit of the glamourous Hollywood actress, but She gave more antics than vocal prowess. Also, she did not perform the song as it was sung on the record or in the movie....big disappointment.

I don't understand how Madonna doesn't get to share in this award when she brought the song to life? If we go by this logic a best actor winner should go to the writer since he wrote the part.

SS had broken his leg and didn't want to hobble up to the stage at the Oscars, so he didn't go. But Disney sent him a chocolate Oscar when he won (or was nominated) with one of its legs broken off-- either it was a joke, or got mangled in the mail.

You can't see music in real life! Gregory Hines should have corrected her, but that probably would have been too embarrassing to do on live TV.
JosephOfGaHoole She probably means they've seen all the songs performed onstage as it's done until today at the Oscars. All the Best Original Song nominees are performed at the ceremony so they'd already seen performances of all the songs up in that category by the time the award was presented.
Yeah, there was a time when ALL of the nominated songs were allowed to perform on the broadcast.
