Virginia Shortlines: Chesapeake & Albemarle Railroad

- The Chesapeake & Albemarle was created in 1990 on the former original Norfolk Southern main (there was an NS before the current NS). Here you will see all of my C&A videos compiled into a single nearly one hour video! This line runs 73 miles from Chesapeake, Virginia south to Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Unfortunately, the loss of some customers has caused train traffic to decline on this line, although it only got 2 trains Monday-Friday at best before. Now it's about 4 trains a week I believe. This video was shot with multiple cameras, a Sony Cybershot DSC-HX9V, a Canon Vixia HF R40, a Motorola RAZR M, and a Samsung Galaxy S5.
Great series! I enjoyed all 3 videos. Sometimes I think the shortlines are more interesting than the trunk systems.
JAMES MARK Thanks! I appreciate it!
On the last video 58 cars to 1 engine and the rock cars were loaded; that's impressive! As of Sept of 18 the orange and black locomotive was still in use because it was running beside me on the other side of Elizabeth City.
I see the C&A on my way to school everyday! One of my favorite short lines!
+Chas Awesome! What time is that and is that southbound?
+Class J Video Productions I don't know. I see it from the high way so it's hard to say. I mainly see it on tuesdays anywhere from 8:30am to 10:30
Chas OK well that should be pretty easy for me to get then. :) I need to get some more Chesapeake & Albemarle video, especially now that I'm shooting in 3840x2160p 4K.
+Class J Video Productions yea. I'm not sure though. The past couple days I haven't seen any trains. It's strange actually.
I live a mile away from the Kempsville crossing, so I hear the train every time it comes by, and I actually saw it go by the Kempsville crossing today at 4:05 PM. Oddly enough, I saw it last Wednesday at 8 in the morning.
You're SO lucky! Sounds like the C&A is pretty irregular these days. No wonder I'm having such a hard time getting them.
I normally hear them about once or twice a week, but its normally at night. They normally run during the day on weekends. I don't actually know their schedule. I get lucky if I see them by the park.
A correction, the line runs South past Elizabeth City to Edenton where it services a concrete plant. At one time it went over Albemarle Sound to PlymouthProctor Baker
This line was started before 1900 and eventually ran to Charlotte NC. There is a book written by PRINCE with all the details. I lived in EC when they still used steam locomotives. I have pictures or steam loco 4501 in Moyock. The wooden trestle William F. Knorr Memorial bridge crossed the Albemarle Sound. Some pix at www.kadiak.org/joe/album
Awesome Compilation of the C&A!!! Great job! I still love that trestle over the water :)
NS CSX Railfan Thanks! It's too bad it doesn't get more action.
Very true! And you're welcome!
+NS CSX Railfan My aunt Vickie (the one that took me to Ashland) actually lives not too far from the C&A. Been to her house many times and never heard or seen it while over there.
That tells you how rare they run those trains :(
NS CSX Railfan Sure does...it's a shame. :(
I mean my favorite series with series 1 in series 1 the train had 35 cars I wish you chaste the train more in series 1 cool thanks 4 sharing this video could you chase the Chesapeake and Albemarle again maybe
Thank you! I just chased them yesterday, check out my videos!
Lucky shot bro of 2190 is that thing still in service or not
Unfortunately it is not. It was renumbered and repainted to 1720 and is out of service due to severe mechanical issues. Its twin, 2158, which retains the blue and red paint (for now) is still in service and has a BEAUTIFUL rare Prime Manufacturing PM-990 (Leslie RS3K clone) horn. The lease on the South Carolina Central unit is up and two GP38s (I think) are on their way here, I wanna do a chase soon and see if I can get them in action.
Now both 2158 and 75 are also retired. 2158 and 1720 were scrapped in late 2023 while 75 might also be scrapped. Now the current roster is 502, still in FEC paint with C&A lettering, 2116 and 3557, both ex Union Pacific units. 2116 replaced 75 while 3557 replaced the 2158.@@VArailfan89
Neat vid! I just saw this train :-)
Thank you and that's awesome!
Does this line still run past Elizabeth city? I drove/walked(some spooky swamp spots back there) the tracks down there back in maybe 2013. It looked like the track was in fairly good condition heading out of EC and there was a grey engine(can't remember which RR but I don't think it was Ches Alb) parked out there past that small industrial park in EC. from what I could tell it looked like there was only that one gravel customer out.
I'm not sure...it may run to Edenton but not sure. Don't get caught walking the tracks, if the police see you, they can ticket/arrest you if they see fit to. I know people have done it for years, but they've really cracked down on it, even on shortlines. If it's abandoned, it's fine, but if they're still active that's another story. About seven years ago I got a trespass warning ticket from Norfolk Southern for videoing on the gravel as a coal train passed by. Apparently too close for them. Not sure what that gray engine could've been, sounds like maybe an industrial engine for a customer that the C&A serves maybe? I haven't gotten that way much. Last time I got video of the C&A was in 2013. I really need to get some 4K video of them passing by. Hopefully now that there's a new year just around the corner, I can. :)
Class J Video Productions he does go to Edenton I took two trips to Edenton First Trip-No railroad cars.
Second trip-Railroad cars were there
Class J Video Productions he only goes there for Railcar storage
Class J Video Productions but still all the costomers are in Elizabeth city
are there any scanners to line or what days and times do they come
160.755 and they come on Tuesdays and Fridays. Tuesday 3-6 PM northbound, 7-10 PM southbound. Friday 5-8 AM northbound, 10 AM-1 PM southbound
I live near the Etheridge Manor Blvd crossing. Sometimes, I walk down there and see if any trains go by.
Lucky! I don't live near any active tracks :(
Do they still use the line from Elisabeth City-Edenton, NC ?
I don't think they do. I know the branch to Weeksville is unused.
huh well I saw on Google Earth and the tracks south of Elisabeth City are in alright condition and look like there maintained.
Maybe they do. I know it's not much either way.
NOW That Sounds Like Southern Pacific
+Railfan Central Productions (SD70ACe Fan) It does sound like SP! You're right!
what locomotive model is 2190
Ex- Santa Fe GP7u (I'm pretty sure)
