This video deserves a lot more likes. We’d all love to surf glassy, peeling waves - but what you see on TV isn’t the reality for most of us who live on the coast. I too can attest that the more time u spend in the water (sloppy or not) the better you’ll be, even if you don’t see it right away. Thank you Shannon for this - wish I’d seen it sooner.
As a surf coach i usually teach people to do their best to work their schedules around surfing the best conditions and not in onshore conditions because the good days of surf seem to improve surfing ability much quicker than surfing onshore wind slop waves. That being said youve done a good job pointing out the subtlety of surfing onshore waves. If you really know what you are doing its fairly easy to find surfable waves in onshore conditions. One thing you didnt mention is that slabby reef breaks can be a good call because when they suck up it smooths the face of the wave out and the onshore wind doesnt play a big role in the quality of the wave. Every once in a while a beach break or shorebreak turns on in such conditions as well
@@KaelanSizemore thanks for sharing. Yes, i think if a person doesn’t have much time to surf they should rather work when the waves are bad and surf when it is good. Some parts of the world though blow onshore most of the time… so they dont have a choice. I like your point on the slab by reefs. If it is onshore it could cause the wave to break and crumble quickly, but if it is a rippable slab by reef then it could work for sure.
Why do I surf on shore conditions like that?? It's all I have where I live. Prime example is big lake surfing, periods of 5-6 secs "disorganized and choppy" as the surf report says. Bigger days waves can break to the right, left or right in front of you. I try Superior 'cause that's where I currently live. I learned about the double up waves the hard way, catching a wave and then dropped off the wave in front of it. Uff. As you say in a way, patience is key and passing on waves or now seeing double up waves and let it go. You're vid is spot on, thanks 🙏🤙✌️
Wow thanks for sharing! That makes you a dedicated surfer! I’m sure when you surf smoother conditions with longer periods you get super excited. I think I need to surf some lakes 😊🙌
@shannonainsliesurf Yea, I don't really recommend, that's why I watch videos/movies of surfas in beautiful warm places and peeling waves and think, one day...and all I'm going thru just learn pays off. Just got back into it over a yr ago so progress is slower than I thought. Personally I blame some of it on the conditions I'm in. It's tuff and always cold. I enjoy participating in nature that's why I love doing it again, regardless 🤫 soul surfing, eh..💪🪶✌️
@ well I am glad you enjoy watching videos and movies of warmer places and also good to hear that you are back at it. Keep it up! And hope you score some good waves and good conditions.
Onshore is one thing but close outs is another...don't know which one is worse. Much respect for still keeping surfing in that shit conditions. Blessed from SA
@ I do love them and feel it does give very good traction! I would highly recommend them. Also, it helps to be wax free which is better for the environment i guess.
great footage! those onshore days are the bread and butter for us in Israel :\ would you recommend PU boards for those conditions? they tend to be less sensitive to chatter
In choosing when to surf ask yourself if you can see a good ride out there. If you can't see opportunities from the beach it's not likely to be any fun.

@@johnnimetro7361 haha. Thanks. Merry Christmas and Happy new year to you too. I will be in EL from tomorrow and hope to surf nahoon while I’m down there!
Take a shot every time you hear "onshore conditions" ☠ Fr though I find I have a lot of fun when it is small, mushy and onshore. It's a good change from clean conditions and keeps you on your toes. As a beginner some of my most important 'breakthrough' sessions have been when it's rugged and crappy waves. During those sessions you are still building your skills and experience so even if it doesn't feel like a great session or like you are progressing, it all helps in the end. Any time spent splashing around in the water is better than at home on the couch! Sometimes you even find a nice wave and it makes it much more rewarding.
@@ridgey_didge you have some good points there. I am glad to hear you enjoy surfing onshore conditions and that you have had some breakthrough sessions in those surfs.

agree, ultimately the thing that improves surfers the most is the time they spend on a wave
@ yes! More wave time is crucial. Well said!
Great footage. It's really helpful to see it. Reminds me of plenty of days out here in California. The paddle out is a beast!

Thanks! This is excellent information for those all too common mankey days. It's sweet and inspiring to see you rip on those fugly waves.

The rip currents exert more power and unpredictability in onshore conditions
Yes they do 🙌
