“I was depressed because I wasn’t managing to function” 🤯🤯🤯 tears in my eyes! This is so SO ME! And I just started my journey of realizing my brain is neurodivergent… I actually avoided wanting to get help because I didn’t want to believe it was my brain that was my problem… I wanted to believe that it was all the different systems I was trying out and that I just hadn’t found the one for me… ugh! So beginning my journey now of how to be successful with the mind that I have and use it for my advantage. Thank you for sharing and helping my healing journey!

Saw video of young adhd mom. She has tips. Was called lazy at first. That hurt her deeply. Now has many women following her. She says not keeping house clean does mean you are immoral. Simplify your life. Do only what you need. Do cut corners, do half assed.
You are enough. Work so it is good enough. Just show your kids your beautiful ability to love and smile at them. They will remember those things..
Not the perfect house. Everyone deserves to feel good about themselves, messy or not. I hope you find peace in your home. Do what you can. That's all you can do.

I'm 32 and got diagnosed 2 months ago. It's a real eye opener. But it's so relieving to find out that I'm not just "bad at being a person", I have a neurological problem! I'm medicated as well as of 2 weeks ago and it's been really interesting.

Would you mind me asking how you managed to get diagnosed? I was told unless I’m a threat to my children to society (whatever that means?) so she said she will verbally diagnose me instead. A thinking of going private but it’s so expensive. My son already has a diagnosis and I have dyspraxia (only just found out that’s what “clumsy cho syndrome is) that I’ve had for years.

@@Heather_williamsons hi unfortunately with the NHS they are still reluctant to put forward people for assessment. This could be their bias, or lack of resources. But I would do some research on it, and write some notes down and go see your GP. I did it and got put on the list but I was looking at 2 years. So I went private. It’s cost me £1200 for the assessment and a years care. I’m now looking at meds and that will be about £150-£190 a month, but once I’m on the right ones my GP will take over that. Then eventually I will be transferred over to Cahms for my general care

Thank you so much for this. I'm 35 and have always felt broken. I can't keep a job although I'm fantastic at interviews and initially getting them. I have been in a hole since 2020 when I finally started realising there is an issue. I'm currently off work with depression( another thing that links to ADHD very often) and have been given every med under the sun for depression and anxiety, but none ever worked. I'm now driving home to England from Scotland to basically explain everything out to my parents. If I'm honest with myself, I don't know that I will be here next year if I can't get diagnosed and medicated. The wait on the NHS is 2-7 years and it is literally killing people. I'm hoping to be able to go private and start living the life that I always wanted. Anyone else in the same situation?

      Hi hun,
I am right there with you! I’m 33 and currently in the process of being diagnosed. Had countless bouts of depression, anxiety and had lots of therapy. Got to breaking point a couple of weeks ago and so called the doctors surgery and they booked me in with a Mental Health nurse. Just wondering whether you could request to see someone in that role at your GP? I’ve got a follow up appointment next month and will then have to wait to see a psychiatrist to fully confirm it but the mental health nurse said it definitely is. Even though I’m waiting for it to be confirmed fully it’s a huge relief for someone in the medical field to say it to me. Hang in there hun, you may feel broken but you’re incredibly brave, strong and courageous for getting to where you are xxx
Oh and just wanted to add, been suffering terribly since my early 20’s but similar to you, I just felt I can’t live like this anymore. Just permanently feel insane!

I was diagnosed with ADHD and Asperger syndrome when I was 20 and a lot of the experiences you talk about also happen to me^^ Even after 4 years, I am still learning new things and connecting my experiences or "odd" quirks to ADHD and realising just how much masking and active observations I do which should actually come to me naturally without me thinking about it! I know that a lot of people who do not want to accept their ADHD or other mental conditions, but knowing that you are different is not bad because it helps you live your life better by doing things suitable for your life and it is not wrong to do things differently from the "norm". My daughter was diagnosed with ADHD just over a year ago and at first I couldn't quite believe it as there weren't really any signs when she was younger - tho she was often complained about by teachers for distracting others (! ) and often had difficulty sleeping due to her 'overactive' mind.
Hers came to light as she went through Uni and at first was put down to anxiety but afer getting her GP to refer her to a Psychologist she got her diagnosis and just like you it has been life-transforming. We didn't know she was having terrible problems focussing on her Uni work as she always did very well but she describes the same as you - a mind that felt like 'all the tabs were open on a computer' and the exhaustion she felt because of all that.
When i read some of the articles she directed me too about middle aged women finally being diagnosed it was quite heart-breaking - so many were being treated for anxiety and depression when in fact the reason they were anxious and getting depressed was beciause they knew there was something wrong with them!
She has been massively helped by her medication - she reckons there's no way she would've graduated with a 2:1 degree last year and managed her Masters degree this year.

The first time I suspected I might have it is-due to some anxiety & health issues-when I had to stop using caffeine about a year ago. I had basically been on low level stimulants my whole life as a big coffee/tea drinker, and that had helped me cope a bit better. Then, when the stress of my job & the pandemic started to subside, I was in such a great place mentally, and I still couldn’t focus. The whole idea of ADHD being the “disruptive in class 5 year old boy” is such a narrow understanding we have as a culture too. I am a high school teacher w an ungraduate degree in psychology even, and I now realize how short-sighted my view was of the disorder. And yes, the coping stuff you mentioned is so real; I am frequently described by people as one of the most organized people they know. And now I realize that almost completely a coping strategy that I just learned subconsciously.

Hello! I really really appreciated your video. I also got a diagnosis of adhd in my 30s, and it explains so so much... A lot of my reading around the subject has been from Gabor Mate's book 'Scattered Minds'. His theory is that stressed parents during the early years of child development result (when that child also happens to be a highly sensitive personality type) in a child who is never able to fully relax and develop the executive function which is needed to live as an independent and self organising human. Increasingly I think that this is actually correct; it seems that everyone I know with adhd indeed had a mum who was at least privately stressed out and not fully emotionally available, and also has a sensitive personality type.
Since he sees adhd as a matter of brain underdevelopment, Gabor Mate in the book recommends seeing a family therapist(just a therapist who understands family dynamics well) who can help provide the conditions in which executive function can begin to develop.
Just putting it out there that you might find it illuminating to read his book, as there is a lot of truth to it I think.

Thank you for sharing this. I got diagnosed at 40, and it was Jessica McCabe's "How to ADHD" YT channel that opened my eyes to that possibility. Like you, I had always assumed hyperactivity is the main characteristic. I always thought that I'm just a lazy procastinator. It wasn't until when I accidentally came across her channel that I found out about executive dysfunction, which I struggle with the most. Like you as well, I didn't realize how much my masking covered (what I know now) are my ADHD symptoms.
You should check her channel. It's a treasure trove of information, community support, and tips. Wishing you the best on your journey!

I had a workmate who retired recently and she had aspergers, she told me she wasn't diagnosed until she was in her 40s with a result so much lost opportunity, education and severe lack of support and understanding. I’m just looking into getting diagnosed myself at the age of 39 but I’m not 100% sure where to start. My son has it and was only diagnosed himself last year. I’m pretty sure my daughter does too but she masks it. I hyper focus on things too and most certainly miss details. I believe if i was in high school now I would have been picked up. I’m super interested in all of this. I’m self employed too, Thank you for sharing

I can relate to every part of your share with us. Your video helped my family understand because you explained everything i couldn't. Thank you for being so brave. Wondered if you have experienced frequent accidents/injuries due to impulsive behavior like i have? Sadly, my attempt at getting diagnosed here in California has not been successful since our county only diagnoses children with adhd. Peace to you on your journey.

You know I thought the same thing cause that's what I heard from others but just last month I did get a referral from my doctor for psychological testing and it's covered by medi-cal. The psychiatrist I was seeing for the last couple years never told me I had that option and he just shut me down and disregarded my concerns every time I brought it up.

I have recently realised I have this as my son is now being assessed for it. I won’t bother getting diagnosed as I can personally cope currently but I completely agree the pandemic made it become apparent. I also recognise it in my own mother which is funny. I will say that there are a lot of other mental health issues come with it due to the way we process and the pressures we are under as women so on so forth....

I’m turning 30 in July and am about to be tested for ADHD, would love to see more videos about your experience and your coping strategies for your ADHD symptoms!
I didn’t start to suspect me having it until I had quit my job to be a stay at home mom. And since then I’ve been struggling to keep it all together. I think I too needed the schedule that work (and school) had always provided! I also went down the rabbit hole of research when I first suspected I had it and find it all so interesting and revealing.
Would also love to know about the medication you take and how it help you. I can’t imagine ever being any way other than I am now so the thought of medication to be able to help… I have questions haha
Thanks for putting your story out there!

I am a 58 y/o female. Newly dx'd with adhd. My dad had and brother has text book symptoms. I get tired from thinking, too. I have strong emotions, sensitive to criticism. These wear me out too. I feel I take on others emotions which I HATE!!! Negative feelings. Feel like things are my fault but improving.
I am on non stimulant called Straterra. On 60mg. I feel I need higher dose. Goes up to 100mg. Need to contact doctor about raising dose. What type of medication do you take for your adhd?

Thanks very much for making this video. My son has adhd his was diagnosed a few years ago, along with my husband at the same time! My husband was always described as an hyperactive child, but has so many character traits that we can now associate with adhd. He’s symptoms always seem worse under times of stress too.
My son recently tried medication as he’s 14 and thought it would help him to concentrate as he starts studying for his GCSEs. However he couldn’t cope with the side effects and decided to stop taking them. Would be interested to know if you are suffering from side effects and what medication you have been prescribed?

Hey I have adhd I know I do, I've done hundreds of tests including some I've purchased and had from my auntie who is a speech therapist who helps in aiding the diagnoses of adhd and they all came back positive. How did you go about getting diagnosed with adhd? I'm going to my GP soon but I'm worried they won't believe me and won't refer me and then I'll never know xxx
