I've been involved in the Hobby of Model Railways / Model Railroads for all my life & at the age of 57 I can say that this is a 'First" a working "Ferry" Well done to all the Guys who thought that one thru. Great Work, Well Done!
waltworld It is very unique. What I like is that it creates time and space but it also can be modified in any layout room to handle the width of the river....Can fit in small spaces.
Yes. Jacques passed away this year but his wife asked if the guys would continue to run the railroad so the ops sessions continue and his grand daughter is part of the group.
Very cool! Well done. An idea to share with your friend - why not add a tug boat to the far side of the car ferry with an acrylic guide that follows the backdrop to solve the alignment issue?
William Brillinger He does have a tug in mind....But it is interesting to see where people stop the process of advancing the layout....I think his main interest is the operations and at this time in his life he has conflicting priorities with his time.
I feel there might be just enough room to attach a ferry tugboat to the wall side of the barge. Fitted with nothing more than free rolling wheels, it would actually be towed by the motorized barge. It would also serve as a spacer to keep the barge from rolling off course on the wall side. An elegant and authentic looking alternative to the system of buoys Jacques mentioned
Now that was AWESOME! I love switching and I would have a field day doing that. In the caption it reads: St. Lawrence River. I live in Watertown, NY. About 25-30 south of Canada. Where is your club located? Happy Railroading!!!!
Great! I do have a few questions. I assume the ferry has not been completed. Will this be a car barge with a tug or a powered ferry? I see a photo attached to the wall. It looks as though it will be the latter.
seagraver It is not complete though I do not know if Jacques will progress his layout further. Maybe some of the gang will pitch in though with the layout as big as it is it takes every once of energy to do maintenance for the operations.
When you watch a real ferry slip in action, even a small autos only, this docking procedure resolves your model the same way. A few hundred pilings. All acting as a funnel for the tapered bow/stern to ease their way into aligning the links as soon as the deckhand can drop them. A situation where time on the scenery makes more time to operate? C liners pulling triple decker auto racks made me cringe, but I did appreciate the dispatcher's map of the system, more or less following the old Grand Trunk is an ol pipe dream of mine too... be nice if someone found a pencil and the back of an envelope to sketch a layout track plane now and then... but this was a nice vid of an interesting line anyway!
Tony Dee Hi Tony. The nature of freelance I guess is you run whatcha brung and what you like. Not easy to find track plans. Generally this one follows the outside of the basement then comes back through the middle to the helix and then the upper level does the same thing back to staging. Glad you enjoyed it Tony
+GTE4everyone - Enzo It would be cool, unfortunately Jacques passed away recently. His ops groups still runs trains but the future is unknown at this time.
+GTE4everyone - Enzo He did indeed and his wife is so generous to let the ops sessions continue. They placed his ashes on a train for one last tour around the layout. His family took turns as engineers for the last run.
John Grove Hi John. I think the best part of the hobby is that folks create there own little gems. The fun part is building something from scratch. I do not believe this would ever be available off the shelf as it would be a limited item and the bench work has to be built a certain way etc....Cheaper to do it on your own as well.,
If you start with an empty barge you load inside-inside-outside-outside then unload in reverse unless there wasn't a lot of cars then we would load the middle only
+Frazer Macaulay The locomotive ferry is a barge with shallow draft and it is difficult to balance so in many situations they prefer to load it with cargo and have train locomotives on each end. Sometimes they even interchange and end up on different railroads.
Hey Chris, Really like that moving ferry idea, clean and smooth. Great video. Bob, Longshadowsmodeltrees.com now in Canada thru Strike Force Hobbies. You might know of them.

TheAudiostud I agree.. Jacques was an inspiration this one. Thinking outside the box can really develop some creative railroading ideas.
What a great idea ! I am always impressed by the everyday things that get incorporated into layouts. Super cool.
bluemtnsman Lots of good ideas in this hobby. I see new ones every day.
That car ferry is one good piece of modelling for sure, great action thanks again.
bodvarland You bet. A super idea that really takes the model railroading to another level.
That car ferry is brilliant, and well done Kevin!
***** Thanks Martin. i will pass on your BZ to Kevin
This ferry is new and awesome! Thanks for sharing! And the subtitels are more than perfect! Extra thanks!
Jo NBahner I like the subtitles as they give you an idea of what is going on. Either that or it looks like trains going by from who knows where.
Chris, very cool. Never seen something like that before on a layout. Thanks for posting.
waltworld It is very unique. What I like is that it creates time and space but it also can be modified in any layout room to handle the width of the river....Can fit in small spaces.
Great video ! Very nice layout ! The ferry is a very nice idea ! Love it !
Thanks for sharing !! I really enjoy your videos !!
Martin
Martin Bruggeman Thanks Martin. It seem no matter where you go there are always surprises that make your train day.
Very interesting challenge. Makes you have to think about what your doing. Kevin did really well.
axeandrail Operations make model railroading very interesting to me and there are so many ways to "skin a cat".
This is what inspired me to go with a layout with 5 ports for rail barge and ferry moves on the south Texas coast.
Sure would be great to see
Ferry! Great, like a moving yard. Thanks for the vid. Robert
robert van ooyen Double ended with a big squeeze in the middle
Fantastic set up with the ferry, makes me want to put one on my layout.
Yes and it runs like a charm
Nice video love the scenery !
Yes. Jacques passed away this year but his wife asked if the guys would continue to run the railroad so the ops sessions continue and his grand daughter is part of the group.
I think it's awesome his buddies and daughter will continue to operate his RR, what an amazing gift he left them all.
The ferry is a great idea. I have seen ferries but none that work. Its rough being the new guy but he did a great job loading the ferry.
Scott
Scott Downey Yes I think Kevin has the knack for operations. very cool and calm. Really takes advice well and keeps the smile and joy of the fun.
cool carferry ,good idea
Harald Schmitz Yes. This really adds a lot to the operations on the ONE
So unique, it's amazing, the possibilities are only limited by your own imagination! -Matt
SLO70 Totally agree Matt. Ain't it great:)
Well done that man.
David Houghton Very innovative.
Outstanding.
arthurhouston3 Thanks
That is one cool ferry!
Yes indeed. The system is so very distinctive and works reliably. Just need batteries
That was amazing.
mastergeebo I really like the creativity and the model railroad action this model provides.
Tres belle, cheers from Calgary.
Merci buckets
Very cool! Well done.

+Steve Ciani Yes Steve Jacques was so innovative. Unfortunately he passed away recently and it will be up to his buddies to carry forward the layout.l
Thanks for sharing.
Sue Line RailRoad Your welcome
Great Idea thanks for the vid
cheffer57 I will pass this on. Thanks for watching
Impressive!
Just such a great modeller. He sure will be missed. His wife kept the group going after his passing.
How is the correct movement along the path on the water achieved, including the alignment to the track on land?
could you use a magnet on the dock to ensure the tracks line up every time?
what a great way to add operational interest
Stevy370 I do not think magnets would be precise enough....He eventually is going to use piers to guide it into position.
That is so cool.
Go/Via/orgohome I really like the additional animation of moving objects in a layout. This is a big one.
This is way cool! :-)
TMandN Very cool indeed. Makes me want to build one.
Now that was AWESOME! I love switching and I would have a field day doing that. In the caption it reads: St. Lawrence River. I live in Watertown, NY. About 25-30 south of Canada. Where is your club located? Happy Railroading!!!!
curraheewolf It is a private railroad located in Kanata west of Ottawa. Glad you enjoyed the show.
Great! I do have a few questions. I assume the ferry has not been completed. Will this be a car barge with a tug or a powered ferry? I see a photo attached to the wall. It looks as though it will be the latter.

Who chocked the wheels and very close clearances.
Selective compression at its best
That is incredible! Add some details and paint, and it'll be a masterpiece! Jacques might want to gear it down a bit though; kinda slow, hehe.
+GTE4everyone - Enzo It would be cool, unfortunately Jacques passed away recently. His ops groups still runs trains but the future is unknown at this time.
Oh... I'm so sorry... I hope he had a wonderful life!
+GTE4everyone - Enzo He did indeed and his wife is so generous to let the ops sessions continue. They placed his ashes on a train for one last tour around the layout. His family took turns as engineers for the last run.
Wow. That is moving...
IMHO... the 1st prerequisite for any hobby is a spouse that understands it...
its like double triple kewl...
Indeed
back in 1978,i photoed the chief wawatam.
Cool
Great job it would b nice if this was manufactor by someone

I have seen a lot of great ideas
And this one on my list.
wow.
drewzdrew27 me wow too
The way you load a barge is inside-inside-outside-outside
Seekanddestroy1ful Thanks
No problem when the railroad I work for has a 4 track barge you need to know how to load it
Seekanddestroy1ful The one question I had was ...Did you unload all then load or did you do some unloading then loading to keep the barge mostly full.
CNLVN Or when you say inside do you mean unload then inside then load it and repeat for the outside.
If you start with an empty barge you load inside-inside-outside-outside then unload in reverse unless there wasn't a lot of cars then we would load the middle only
why cant the engine go on the ferry
+Frazer Macaulay The locomotive ferry is a barge with shallow draft and it is difficult to balance so in many situations they prefer to load it with cargo and have train locomotives on each end. Sometimes they even interchange and end up on different railroads.
Maybe the tracks on the ferry are just dead tracks and have no power to work a loco
You're right it's a motorised float, not a car ferry.
Very good
Hey Chris, Really like that moving ferry idea, clean and smooth. Great video.
Bob, Longshadowsmodeltrees.com now in Canada thru Strike Force Hobbies.
You might know of them.
Widi1956 Hi Bob. I will pass on your compliments to Jacques.
