He never chose Nini over Gina. Gina wasn't an "option" for him. Gina pushed him away after she found out that she has to move away again. She "confessed" her feelings to Ricky RIGHT AFTER he got back with Nini. We also know that Ricky is not the type of person who like changes. He always clings to things he is used to. Now don't get wrong. He loved Nini and I also loved them together but his relationship with her is something he was used to. She was a safe choice. With Gina it would be something different. He needs to be ready for changes.
