Also don't discount the valve lash being set a little wide, that'll have a fair bit of effect at idle, the valve opening time will be affected a significant amount by the tappet hitting the cam late. Yes, A series engines aren't the quietest ever but getting the valves set just right is important.
Had I been keeping the car longer I would definitely have gone back and rechecked that, it sold much quicker than I expected so it was a job for the new owner.
Very likely, had I been keeping the car longer and it hadn't sold so quickly after putting it up for sale I would have fitted a new cap and probably electronic ignition too.

It would be well worth cleaning the distributor cap... it may be tracking internally.
