- Want to know how to paint a Klaus' style Background? Here's a tutorial from our Production Designer Marcin Jakubowski actually used for BG Team training during the making of the film! #Klaus now available on #Netflix!
When Jesper distinguishes himself as the postal academy’s worst student, he is stationed on a frozen island above the Arctic Circle, where the feuding locals hardly exchange words let alone letters. Jesper is about to give up when he finds an ally in local teacher Alva, and discovers Klaus, a mysterious carpenter who lives alone in a cabin full of handmade toys. These unlikely friendships return laughter to Smeerensburg, forging a new legacy of generous neighbors, magical lore and stockings hung by the chimney with care. An animated holiday comedy directed by Despicable Me co-creator Sergio Pablos.

the fact that this studio is showing the ins and outs of how they made thier film is amazing.
At this point, I've probably seen almost the entire movie in pencil test format. I love how open the studio is and how they allow the individual artists and animators to take credit for the shots and designs they worked on.
Best animated film of the year & we get comprehensive behind the scenes tutorials??? This is incredible
Really the best of the last many years if it wasnt for into the spider-verse
@@Hubert99999 It was competing against Toy story 4. Spiderverse won best animation the year before. Klause should have won that against toy story, in my book. Still pretty salty about it
Pepper Pan i know. It shoudlve def won against toy story but spiderverse is still better imo
Thanks for share!
Where can i find your brush pack?
whose gonna win?
an expensive 3 years of art class or 34 min blessed art video
I did a 3 year animation course, learnt more in 3 months on the job. And the guys at the studio said they would have hired and trained me even if I didn't have the diploma. so.... save your money people. Unless for some reason you really need a bit of paper, eg: if you want to get visas to work overseas, those certificates and diplomas are often necessary to gain the points needed.
onionface may I ask how you got a job in this studio? I want to work in one one day and would like to know how to get in one day! Thanks and amazing work!
@@mitthrawnuruodo1730 Sure. I walked in and showed them my portfolio, life drawings and comics. They employed animators as freelancers, so training me "on the job" didn't cost them anything. When I started the internet wasn't so popular, so employment happened locally. Now days you have a lot more competition and studios don't have open doors anymore.
onionface thanks!
Cant wait for another project from this studio, they have beaten all of animated movies this year with their first one.
the more I look around the more I find about this inspiring movie, it is a piece of art and all the work behind it is so incredible
16:09 Awesome tip. It's been always there and I never realized. I used to disable everything to pick up the right colour
the film was really great, an absolute masterpiece! Thank you for this tutorial! Also in 19:50 something is mentioned about a brush pack, as a photoshop user I would like to know where I can get this brush pack for practice and education purposes. :)
Bewildr Trees I second that 😊🙏
gumroad.com/florianaupetit i think
I'm an artist but I'm always having trouble with the coloring process. This made me cry tears of joy and the eagerness to learn. Love this movie btw
This is spectacular, and the walk through has a really nice pace to it too. In particular, I was blown away by the background design of this film. Stunning
As an international animation student who doesn’t have many resources , this is incredible , the studio’s respect and appreciation for the craft is really soul warming
I've been using photoshop for years, the amount of knowledge I wasn't aware of that Marcin here casually drops off the cuff with regards to tools, effects and workflow tips has left me astonished.
Thank you for sharing some of the magic behind this movie!
Thanks man very grateful
in the video he mentions a brush pack. anyone know where to get it?
0:56 you can find the action in the art department folder ? where ? :)
This was used to demonstrate to the actual team that developed the backgrounds, they will unlikely release the brush pack to the public. I'm amazed they even released this actually
He explains it here: ua-cam.com/video/dYbF0jTZQOI/v-deo.html
it's also helpful in order to not get a white edge inside your selection.
Noga Ben Dor thanks man
Matt Sanz Art yup it’s pretty cool to see the process .
The BEST animated film i have seen in a LONG time! Klaus was amazing, thank you and thank you for this video! I hope you will create more stunning projects!
Awesome! UNA JOYA!! Would you guys consider selling your Klaus Brushes any time soon? I would definitely pay for that set!
I will pay too!
@@LicoreAlt me too!
Better than a 4 day digital painting workshop, thanks!!
Sergio (and all at SPA) - besides having created a wonderful film that will be enjoyed by many people for years to come , you are enriching the animation community by sharing these informative videos of "how we did it" . Thank you.
is the style guide posted online anywhere? i'd love to read it to see how they came up with the reasoning behind all this stuff
have you found it?
Thank you for sharing this video. Very useful and give nice ideas how to approach creating different effects.
Love this, and love Klaus. This is almost as entertaining as the animation processes I watch from this film, and it blows me away that I can see as much life and character in the backgrounds as the actual characters in the film! So inspiring! 💜
Where can i find the style guide he's talking About at 0:16?

@@thedanioc94 thank you!
I would love to take a class taught by this guy. Loved every minute of this video. Thanks for sharing!
Incredible! Where can we find the bushes brush set?
The team most likely made custom brushes for the movie and are unlikely to release them. You can make your own tree brushes, though!
kchu0403 haha, you’re probably right! The way he phrased things at 19:54 made it sound like it was available for download, but it would make sense if it’s not lol
@@raethestar44 It's because it was used for BG Team training (it's in the description but easy to overlook), so "you will find in our brush pack" and "you can flip" etc are tips and directions for the artists who are trying to mimic the art direction / design - they will likely all share a set of assets like brush packs to make sure that the rendering is uniform throughout the movie.
drunkenmuse oh, that makes sense, thank you!
oh damn it, i wanted that brush set so badly
Hi guys, where can I get a pack of these brushes?
Is there somewhere we can find the art department common folder? :D
WOW this was super helpful and inspiring! I never heard that trick before about adding light as a separate layer and through a mask. I must get in the habit of assigning keys and using lasso tools for blocking more. Incredible work! Thank you so much for taking the time to share this and with such clarity
Nicely done, it’s still a painfully slow process. Which isn’t a criticism but saying a lot of creative judgment is needed to finish a background scene.
I really hate that Toy Story FOUR beat Klaus. You all got ripped by the machine. Truly, best animated film of the year, if not several years. Story is everything but the art to go with makes it perfection.
Amazing! Where can we find this brush pack?
Hi Spa Studios! I admire your creations! In the sense that I love 2D animation, and I really appreciate it, although everyone forgot about it. You painted the cartoon "Klaus" just magically! More beautiful than 3D animation lively and unusual, magical! 2D animation is the future! (By the way, I am also an animator, and I have a dream one day to work with you :) for this dream I do a lot, I hope it comes true :) (I'm just from Russia ...)
Oh, same here, I wish I could work with them... I am from Poland, but I guess Marcin Jakubowski is from Poland?
@@LicoreAlt Wow! I hope one day our dreams will come true! :)
Although it will be hard to fulfill this dream, I still believe in myself;)
And you

@@LicoreAlt At the expense of Marvin I don’t know where he is from
I only love and watch 2d things 3d is something I don't like to see any longer
How does he change the hue/saturation without creating another layer that needs to be clipped? And how doe she 'reload' the lasso selection when he adds the light?
This is amazing!
Can you possibly show is us how you guys make characters?
Awesome movie, awesome painting :D i love every aspect of it
The only thing I'm wonder is that he talks a lot about distorting edges (33:36) and I don't know what he is talking about.
What is he doing exactly and for what purpose?
He's painting on the mask using a grain brush to break up the sharp edges. It adds texture and dimension to the snow
YOOOOOOOOOO that's good. HOLY! This is so amazinggggg!!!
Thank you so much for sharing! and educating!!!
Man... fact I lost your house, James' rafiki, Mr. Pablo mailman, and weird squirell autographs from annecy. Can I get another one?
hi. Where can i found the brushes pack?
wow it's so awesome and beautiful i want to learn more but i don't have drawing tab and other things aaaaaa haha
can you please provide the brushes.
It is amazing true but I dont have the brushes so its pity
This is TOO cool! I especially love how you made what started as just a stamp into a beautiful backlit tree. The way you use these simple tools to enhance the environment is just ughh truly awesome. I'm super inspired!
Very well explained. Thankyou for sharing.
Love these tutorials. How about one (or more) on the CLEAN-UP Animation process ? The line work was very controlled . I am wondering for the clean-up if you used any special tools for manipulating the vector lines in Harmony or was it all just very careful drawing ? Did you use customized brush/pencil tools or the standard set of Harmony brushes and pencils ?
Klaus? Frm the originals??
Thank you so much for being so generous and sharing the knowledge that's taken you guys years to develop. Lots of love and respect from our small studio in India. :)
These behind-the-scenes tutorials are really lovely. Thanks for these!
it could be so interesting to get the unpainted drawing in jpg, so we could try follow the video like a real tutorial !
It's amazing, you know? I watched the video for the workflow, the shortcuts professionals take, absorbing the advice about hard and grainy brushes and painting masks, not colours-and then, a few minutes before the end, I started to feel the chill and became nostalgic, remembering the feel of a snowed-in towns in the mountains, of how early darkness falls in winter. This is what art is about. Thank you!
Thank you for this, I'm currently learning how to paint backgrounds for my paintings and animations. Although I won't try to imitate the Klaus style I'll definitely use the tips and tricks that'll help me with mine.
I just saw the movie today. It was touching and fun. Thanks for your hard work ✨✨
Very nice stuff. Top notch, animation was exceptional. In fact everything, story telling, lighting, creative direction... Dare I say, instant classic. Kudos to the entire team.
How long does this take in real time?
Thanks! Thanks a lot for this amazing film and for the opportunity to understand how you made it! It means a lot for people like me who would love to study and learn from your wonderful works!
Are there more of these available? I'd love to watch any / all of them.
AWESOME thank you so much for the tutorial! I loved every single background in Klaus, it was so beautiful!!
Now I am looking for this brush pack you talking about but I can't find it anywhere. I would like to start using grainy brushes so please if someone has it please tell me where I can find them. Awesome technique !
You won't find the brush pack anywhere, unfortunately. This is an internal training video from SPA studios for their background painting trainees.
where can i have the brush pack please ?
How You made the snow on tree behind the house - amazing!
this is real education ... we need more of this gold
This was gold! Thank you so much for sharing your process, breaking things down was really insightful :)
thank you for sharing the process!!
Thank you so muchhhh!!!! This inspired me!!!
Fucking gooooooooood
Amazing!! where I can find more about how prepare the file for compositing? any video about that? THANKS
The most beautiful animated film since Sleeping Beauty.
This 3D o 2D :v?????
2D
Thank You for Sharing this And I congratulate you not only for Klaus but for creating a pipeline that revolutionize traditional 2D animation to be deeply better than 3D ... wrong choice Disney :p I hope for more projects and Animation movies and serials. And I hope for me to be part of the crew.
May I know where Ican get the brush pack? wanted to have them so badly....
Yes.
This is extremely helpful, so glad I found this channel.
This is great! Thanks for sharing!
this look so hard, but just a thought about how people would do this until the 90's with acrylics and stuff, it kinda looks easier.
hi, your job is exelent - thank you very match!
can you please give me a link on your 'styl guide', when you tell about style of the Klaus?
Bless this studio
Great stuff! Have you considered using solid color layers with masks?
This was super informative! Thank you so much!
Amazing~!! This tutorial is neat and Precise. It helps a lot.
Incredible, I'm so grateful for this tutorial!
Marcin and the SPA Studio! Thank you very much for sharing!
Muchas gracias por compartir. Excelente.
Such a thrill watching this. Thank you for sharing your process.
🤍
other than some parts of the story there is nothing bad you can say abou this movie
I really needed those hue and saturation tips.
Do you know tutorials only for this matter?
you have to paint the light like if you were angry :v
As someone in the industry, I'm so incredibly happy to see you share this!!
no one ask for your brush pack? how we can have your brushes?
This feels like a random tutorial video you search on google and this is what you find.
How do I get their style guide and brushes?
Thank you for share this! It's really helpful♡
Where can we get the brushpack? With the tree brushes? o:
Thanks!
This is amazing, I thought it looked fine halfway through
oh wow this is so helpful and accessible, thank you for sharing!!
