The guys over at BaM Animation mentioned your channel in their latest channel, and I'm really glad they did. Both your art style and the thorough explanations you give during the decision making process have been a delight. Keep up the great work!
This is great! I’ve been watching it over and over to grasp an understanding of what you’re doing. Masking is my enemy! I see the benefits of it certainly. Thanks!
Your videos are so inspiring, I studied animation 10 years ago and since I couldn't get a job in animation I decided to do something else. Since watching your videos a few weeks ago, I've started drawing again even planning on getting a drawing tablet so I can work in my portfolio. Thank you
You graduated in the recession when there were no jobs. Me too I graduated in 2008. I don’t blame you for giving up, I’m glad I could inspire you to draw again. Those years were far more discouraging than most people could imagine. The job market is a lot better now.
I felt like I was 10 years old again, watching cartoons with butter and sugar on toasts.Your drawing feels like home.Good tutorial Andrea, thank you BaM Animation
Great tutorial! I've struggled with backgrounds for years so this really helps. Also, this drawing looks gorgeous. It's crazy how just a few masking layers can really make a background pop!
Came here because of Bam animation, it truly lived up to the expectations, your content is amazing and inspiring, informative and entertaining. Hope to see your channel grow
I love your commentary! It's so adorable. I love the shadow technique. I've always wondered how it was ACTUALLY done. Thank you so much. I look forward to more stuff from you, animation and background design tips. :D
I did the painting in a day. I'm not sure exactly how many hours, maybe 4 or so. Editing the video and doing the voice over takes way more time than the art itself.
I’m less than a year out of art school, trying to learn how to paint backgrounds for tv animation on my own. It´s so hard to keep learning with few access to resources. I just wanted to thank you for putting your process out there, it´s helped immensely. I was so stressed about trying to figure out a process on my own and nothing was going well. This was so clear and helpful. Splitting the line art and color for the foreground middle ground and background seems so obvious in hindsight but I hadn’t thought of organizing things this way and it’s already solved half my issues haha.
You’re welcome, I didn’t learn this process until I started working at Nickelodeon, and I had never heard of anything like it before. It’s crazy how much faster I could work and create a generally better painting than I would with a different process.
This style is so vibrant and focused. Really beautiful. And I really like the highlighting and shadowing technique you use. I'd never thought of that before. It works so well for the cartoony style.
I'd love to see how you'd handle backgrounds in different styles. I'd never thought of using masks in that way to get texture while still being able to edit the base color, would love to see what other useful tricks you have to share :)
My art director on Pig Goat Banana Cricket introduced me to this method and when it clicked in my brain it blew my mind. It's both highly editable and makes your files simple and organized. It works on just about any style with linework and you can also use it for lineless stuff but you have to make the file big enough that the aliasing doesn't show, but I usually approach lineless stuff differently.
Another great video. I like your music choice (it suits you) and the volume doesn't bother me at all. Just keep them coming because these are informative and entertaining.
this helped me a lot, i have been looking for a video that really explained HOW and the process and i finally found it, thank you soo much!!! i really mean it
I didn't learn this process until I got a job at nickelodeon working on an animated tv show. I wanted to share it cause I wished there was a video on it out there when I was learning. I'm glad I could help!
I think you might want to pull the music levels down a bit, because it gets a little bit in the way of your voice, but otherwise, these are extremely high-quality videos. Keep it up, I'm digging this.
Thanks for the feedback. The struggle is real, I'm editing this in premiere and the volume controls are so touchy. I should probably export the sound an do a final pass on it in a sound program.
Loved it. Loved the sketch , loved presentation, loved your voice... But I didn't understand how the perspective became useful. lost job to corona...trying to amp my skills for the next job.
sorry you lost your job to corona :( but amping up skills is always a good course of action though! good luck! Perspective just helps your forms look more solid. It's a foundational skill that will vastly improve the quality of your backgrounds.
Hey, love the videos. What brush are you using? When I use the already installed brushes I don't get smooth fills. When I use the pencil the lines are too pixilated. Any help would be appreciated!
The background needs to be 1920x1080 pixels when it's cropped to its most zoomed in point. If I'm not sure how much I'm going to zoom in I just make it 8000x4500 which is the same ratio but big enough to zoom pretty far and is a number that's easy to remember... only problem is some computers can't handle that size of file. If you are doing an extreme zoom sometimes you need to do a second background that is trace over more zoomed in with extra detail, especially if the lines start looking too thick. I usually do characters whatever size they will appear in the animation.
Having issue with the simple perspective trick. Selecting the middle lines of the star pattern either moves the whole star polygon or it only moves one line...then it crashes photoshop. Don't know what I am doing wrong.
I see you figured it out, but for anyone else: there’s a little gear button with more options on the top toolbar, all the settings can be changed in there.
This video might be old but the technique still works on the current version of photoshop. Generally photoshop has only added features in the new versions.

Very beautiful. I'm going to watch it in x0.25 speed now
I'm in love with your work. That's the kind of painting I've been training to achieve. I wonder how your deep ocean looks like xD.
I think you might want to pull the music levels down a bit, because it gets a little bit in the way of your voice, but otherwise, these are extremely high-quality videos. Keep it up, I'm digging this.

I thought the music volume was fine.
I agree. The video is well-done, but I find the music very annoying.
I like the music, also my english its no perfect so i turn on the subtitles.
yes, good video, music sucks.
Your videos are extremely helpful already! 😫 teach us how to parallax all the things.
Thanks! I plan on doing one on compositing and covering parallaxing there. But I need to make some stuff first to composite!
Thank you so much
Great video and technique. Very simple and easy to understand but music was a bit overkill on my end lol
wow thank you so much
Loved it. Loved the sketch , loved presentation, loved your voice...
But I didn't understand how the perspective became useful.
lost job to corona...trying to amp my skills for the next job.

Wow.. awesome.. but how you animated the whole layers in after effects. You make them in groups or merge them?
loved it :). Ho wmany time did you spend on this piece?
I'm really enjoying your videos, but i was just wondering, what is your setup? are you using like a wacom tablet with your pc?
love it .. i just wanna ask u what this drawing style called ??
Thats beautiful, btw how much time you took to complete?
Just coz that simple perspective tool trick you, my friend, get a like.
very informative super cool thanks so much.
Hey, love the videos. What brush are you using? When I use the already installed brushes I don't get smooth fills. When I use the pencil the lines are too pixilated. Any help would be appreciated!
it's not a special brush. I explain the whole colouring process starting around 3:20 in the video.
download for the brush?:) or the name?
omg thank you so much mam' appreciate this alot
What size are the canvas best for animated short film backgrounds? also when the cahrater is walking what sizes do you do them?
The background needs to be 1920x1080 pixels when it's cropped to its most zoomed in point. If I'm not sure how much I'm going to zoom in I just make it 8000x4500 which is the same ratio but big enough to zoom pretty far and is a number that's easy to remember... only problem is some computers can't handle that size of file. i m ur fan Andrea

Good video thanks you. The background music makes it hard to hear your explanations well
!!! Yay
👍👍
Great, thanks!!! The music though is too loud
The options have changed in the newer versions of PS. Anyone know how to create the star shape with 99% in current version?
Nevermind, I figured it out
I see you figured it out, but for anyone else: there’s a little gear button with more options on the top toolbar, all the settings can be changed in there.
how can i send you my art so you give me some tips i really need tips in my background drawing because i need to improve
Awsome but i am still confused at anti-alias point
When i pain the background it creates white outlinewhih make it worse how to fix it?
Like from Belarus)))
I struggled. Can you make a tutorial for the beginners, please? I tried to slow the video down but still, I couldn't follow the instructions.
Hard to focus on what's being said with music music in background lol
This is 3 years ago................. I came back 3 years later..... Still 2020. Still cant draw "darkness"...
Ei h tablet do you use?
Cool video, but the technic doesn't work anymore... Photoshop doesn't let me select all the points...
This video might be old but the technique still works on the current version of photoshop. Generally photoshop has only added features in the new versions.
Hey Andrea, if you need musik. I recomend Zafu. Google zafumusic. It’s free
