I currently wear a Bauer Re-Akt and it is very comfortable.
I personally don’t trust the Virginia Tech Hockey Helmet ratings because of their bizarre testing features. They test the helmet by swinging a hammer at just one side of the helmet. Probably one side of the helmet would protect better than the other side. Furthermore, they should test it for real world hockey impacts. The ratings aren’t just human enough because the fake human (a dummy) that they are using might have a different head shape than some hockey players. I would use it for a reference guide, but I don’t fully trust them.
The best helmet is the Helmet that tailors to your head. Look up on websites that have the right head profile (round vs oval head shape. You can find that by looking at the top of their head and seeing if it is a round or oval outline.)

Your claim is false. The VT website (linked in the description, would take you 30 seconds to inform yourself) states that the test is NOT just one side of the helmet. They test impacts on ALL SIDES of the helmet. Front, top, side, and back. And it's done at three different energy levels. It's pretty analogous to a shoulder-to-head check or head hitting the glass along the boards.

Great video, always excited to see new ones from you guys. I’ve heard a lot of unfortunate controversy over the Virginia Tech testing so when buying a new helmet I wasn’t purely going off of it, however oddly enough the helmet that fit me like a glove was their number two rated RE-AKT 200. It’s a bit on the heavier side but it’s so comfortable compared to my old entry level CCM bucket. Try on helmets before buying them if you can, all the research I did basically got thrown out the window when I started trying them on. Thanks to your vids I learned about Hockey Ninja and am currently waiting for the titanium visor/cage combo mask to ship out hopefully soon. Cheers and keep up the content! 🍻

The Virginia tech test is simulating a years worth football data. Football head contacts are not the same as hockey contacts. Falls and puck shots and random head contact would be the main factors. Football is constantly head to body or head to head impacts. My son has taken a slapper in head with his Tacks and he came back smiling. He was amazed on how much he did not feel. ...vs just his last 910. If a material can absorb or distribute energy. That's what you are looking for. Unfortunately most helmets can't do both. If you head is going to be moved enough shake you head... concussion.

    • @jsquared1013
      @jsquared1013 3 місяці тому

It's still a valid set of reference points to add into your selection criteria. If it simulates "football style" impacts, then that's going to be more comparable to bad shoulder-to-head or head-to-boards kinds of hits in hockey. Other existing tests account for stick/puck/etc kinds of impacts, so look at both criteria and then test fit. Weigh all three (or more) according to your preference.

disregard the VT helmet test, many manufacturers like developers MIPS have called into question their methodology. They used less than 50 impacts and a single size head mannequin, their impact testing does not relate to something you would experience in a hockey game. Just ignore the VT test and find a helmet that fits your head best and stay away from goon leagues. No helmet will protect from a trash dirty beer league blind side hit.

So here is a 9 month review for my son who has been using a large size. The hyperlite was good when we first bought it. But it's interesting you talk about the front forehead piece. My son is on the ice all year round 4-5 days a week and the front forehead protective piece came off. Also it's light but doesn't feel as protective. The back of the head also fell apart. So the Bauer has some durability issues. Went back to exchange due to durability issues of the hyperlite and picked up the CCM instead.
Only been one two weeks with the CCM but my son likes it much better.
Not sure about your guy doing the review and bitching about his hair getting caught and itch but to each their own I guess. All that to say I got the hyperlite based on your review a year ago and I wish I got the CCM instead. So again to each their own, your guy who reviews may want to use it for more than one skate before making such comments as he did on this video.
I think your guy testing the equipment is not exactly elite level and that's what is lacking about your reviews. He is not elite level and he is not using the equipment at an elite level. So whatever "review" he gives you should be taken with a grain of salt so to speak. You may wan tot think about putting these products through players who are on the ice 5-6 sometimes 7 days a week. Instead of this dude who is seems like a "beer leaguer" at best..........

CCM would no bother making a $500 CAD helmet if they didn't believe in it...as well as have their NHL players wear it. @jsquared1013 3 місяці тому

@@bronson8232 the VT test is very clear and transparent. It is legitimate and it's a good set of data points to consider. It emulates hits to the head (e.g. bad checks or getting your head knocked against the boards) and doesn't really evaluate for pucks/sticks and that sort of thing, so you'd have to look at another "traditional" rating to know how it deals with puck and stick impacts, but there is nothing "delusional" about it other than maybe only considering that one test to the exclusion of others.

But I have not come across place which tests helmets for hockey style impacts. So the best you can do is to see what the testing when the helmets are being developed are. @jsquared1013 I haven't dismissed it out of hand. High energy impacts are only a small part of hockey hits. You have more low energy impacts in the game, but both can cause a concussion. Mips/True helmets looked a five years of hockey games at elite level and said that most impacts that caused or might have caused a concussion were rotational in nature which VT doesn't do a good job of testing against or at least didn't a few years ago. Since I wrote that comment, I haven't looked into any updates to their testing, so maybe they have new methods that I don't know about.

Hey Chris - Barry Miller from the VT Helmet Lab. Very nice video and thanks for the positive references: We'd love to fully explain our Hockey Helmet Testing protocol, how it was derived from real world hockey environment, and concussions risks as many comments below are based on partial information. my contact information is on our webpage. Best to you and a safe hockey season for all.

Shockingly I as a person who sells helmets for Pro Hockey Life in Canada has to combat woefully inadequate Virgina Tech again. First things first. CCM DOES NOT WANT YOU IN THAT FL500!!! Which is V.T. highest rated helmet. I know this cause they told us themselves in a meeting when that helmet was about to come out, they also don't trust V.T. testing methods. V.T. takes football tests and applies them to hockey what has a totally different type of impacts which they don't test against. They have low rated helmets that are created by the University of Ottawa's head trauma department, so if anyone knows how to protect the head it's them. There are to many issues with V.T. to truly make them reliable.

This, also manufacturers have almost certainly been able to make helmets that do better in the VT study not necessarily in real life situations

@@Tweek5470 which is what CCM did there. They made a "5 star" helmet for that study so they could say that they had the "safest" helmet and create a halo affect. What CCM wanted to do was to create a halo affect that said CCM had the safest helmet and to influence you into thinking that CCM has the safest helmets

Good Day Taylor - a colleague sent me to this page so thought I'd reach out and point out a few things. Our Hockey Helmet testing procedures were derived from on-ice head impacts. We went to a hockey rink and conducted tests in order to understand that sport environment. Headforms were impacted to ice and dasher boards based on calculated velocities of real ice hockey players. The risk function (peak linear and rotational head accelerations) for concussions do come from over 2 million helmeted impacts from football players as that is the only real data set available for helmeted head impacts. All of our research is peer reviewed in injury biomechanics, biomedical, and exercise science journals. In general the helmets that better reduce these rapid head accelerations reduce concussion risks. Check out our publications page or this specific paper to fully understand the Hockey Helmet ratings link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10439-015-1278-7 Happy to answer any questions. Barry

I play 3X a week. I have had numerous hard falls backwards, where the back of my helmet has hit the ice very hard. No concussions not even a headache. I wear a CCM 210. Because of the number of head strokes I have had with it, I will be replacing it for the next season to be on the same side. I’ll wear the old one when I’m on the ice coaching as I have little chance then of banging my head on the ice.
The CCM 210 was chosen due to how comfortable it was on my head.
      Another informative video.

Make a list of famous times NHLers had their career ended or missed significant playing time due to concussion. Now go back here onto UA-cam and watch video of those incidents. The OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of those were checks to the head, not puck or stick impacts. Those checks to the head are biomechanically similar to football hits, and are well-emulated by the VT test methodology. VT doesn't just "apply football tests to hockey", they put accelerometers in hundreds of hockey players' helmets (NCAA, high school, and bantam) and aggregated the impact data over the course of a full season.
The companies are the ones behind the pushback, because it's more expensive for them to do extra tests and design around more varied types of impacts. And if CCM "doesn't want you in an FL500" then why the fcuk are they selling it?

Helmets, mouth guards, internal padding, etc. do not prevent concussions. I am not sure why that is such a difficult concept for people to understand. Of course, they are probably better than nothing, but that does not mean they make a significant difference in concussion prevention. People have sustained concussions from being hit in the body -- how could a helmet prevent that? The mechanism for injury for Concussions stems from the movement of the head via the neck. Again, something a helmet can not prevent.

Helmets make a huge difference for concussions if an impact to the head is involved (and most concussions do involve an impact to the head). It's not the "movement of the neck" that matters, its the acceleration of your brain in your skull. All else equal, brain damage would be worse if your neck didn't move. On impact, the helmet distributes force into the padding and around your skull, lessening acceleration your brain experiences. There is a massive difference between smashing your head on the ice with and without a helmet. Mouth guards also help: say you get hit under your jaw, the mouth guard compresses and ultimately reduces the acceleration your brain experiences. These small moments on impact matter a lot.

Do NHL players really care THAT much about their protection? Half of them use their mouthguard as a chew toy. Not to mention all the players that decided not to wear visors before they were mandatory. I'd say most of the equipment they use is comfort based, as long as it's reasonably protective.

Dear Hockey Community: The VT Helmet Lab has updated and rescaled the Hockey Helmet Ratings as well as included some recent helmets (Bauer Hyperlite). There is a Memorandum per the these STAR Rating changes in the Technical Documents. Snow Sport Helmet Ratings have also been released with Rugby headgear in very near future. www.vt.edu/hemet

Thanks for sharing that update. So on the Bauer hyperlite it says it's relatively good for low and high impacts, but poor in comparison on medium impact. They dont explain how that is possible? Seems like a strange result but I don't know enough about physics either 😁

@@kyled9357 Hey Kyle! Those comparison charts when you click on a helmet model are comparing that helmet model to the Average 5 STAR helmet scores. It is a challenge to design a helmet that optimizes protection for the various energy levels. For example: in low energy impact you need a very compliant (soft) padding structure . For a high energy impact you need a stiffer pad that can attenuate that energy and does not "bottom out" or compresses completely. The moderate energy impact would fall between between these scenarios. Many Hockey Helmets have separate layers of padding with various densities in an effort to attenuate the various types of impact energies. So depending on these characteristics helmets can test/rate very differently for each impact energy. In general more padding usually works better to slowly absorb all that energy.
