As a fellow intermediate skier, I tried these years ago and felt the same way. The fun factor was just greater for me. I loved being able to “skate” with them on flat ground and not need poles. The lower top speed didn’t bother me personally, just like I prefer skates not built for top speed when shredding the city.

I am 6 2 and 200 bs with duck feet. I only use skiblades. I have more control and don't end up losing control because I crossed the skis. I also like that I can do a quick turn when someone decides to take a nap in front of me.
I’m not a good skier and I picked up a pair of these to help my kids when they where learning. I could easily get close to the to pick them up. Now I only use snowblades. Super easy to use and I don’t get my skis crossed. They grip great on ice and feel good going fairly fast.
Fastest i have gone on ski blades is 49 mph. I think lack speed people refer to, is them backing off at speeds above 35mph as doesn't feel very stable.

Learned on regular skis then 3rd trip tried blades and that’s all I have used since. That was 25 years ago

I picked some up a couple of years back at a ski trip for like 80 bucks and love them since then, since I'm a shitty skier and I couldn't keep up with my girlfriend with normal skis. The best part: maintenance costs as much as for kids skis.
I have the same ski boards. Occasionally I forget I'm not on skates and almost start doing crossovers (which would end badly).
What brand model are these?
@@jackripper6033 Elan Freeline. Mine are 99cm. If you do a search for them they might look different. I also have the camo pattern but for this year it was changed.

I ski'd Sunshine Village as a Southern teenager with only Rollerblading as prep. With skis way worse than modern. It worked great.
i have head razzle dazzle they are 94cm lenght never before skiing regular skates but those are very nice but i have 15 years of extreme ice skating experience so it was easy to master. Balance, agility, stance are very similar to ice skating. You look like young Lance Henriksen, and even similar voice

I used to take these in the half pipe at blue mountain back in the day. Actually landed a backflip once (am still impressed with myself about that 20 years later 🤣)
I have old school Salomon 99.9s from back in the day 20 years ago. They are in great condition, work great still.
The speed is super fast on groomed (avg 40 mph on 200 ft runs). You got to pump at the apex of your short carve to get the most.
Regarding the dynamic of those vs inline, for me the only the balance, strength transfered. Controls and weight distribution totally different and are about 70% of the experience.

I am returning to snow blades this year ( today in fact), I started on them 20 years ago when my lads were snowboarding.I could do the snowboard park with them. Went back to skiing but I have missed this hill style. I like you love to skate and this is the closest to skating you get on snow. Great video.
Learned on short skis (130-140 cm) and want to give blades a try. My kids and I ice skate a lot and we started skiing last year. It's funny how much skiing transfers to skating.

Are u using the binddings which came with tem, and if you do not mine, which boot size u are running. I am not sure can stock bindings accommodate my 44eu boot (because I am thinking of getting a pair od 50% discount atm)
You never fail to amaze me!
I also use snowblades but mine are a bit longer at 110cm, it makes them more stable while keeping that mobility. At 110 centimeters you can get the same stability on hard snow as skiis but you must be more mindful of keeping your center of gravity in the middle of your blades; If not, you tumble and flip back or face down. Also you need to make sure you keep your blades parallel at high speeds. Another thing about snowblades is that, it is not feasible to skii on soft snow with the smaller sizes. With 110 cm blades you kinda can but it is rather tricky and needs skill. You need to move your center of gravity backward by leaning back in order to move your blades’ front upwards like this: (>> / >>) The upwards inclination allows you to ride on the snow without being submerged. Due to the small surface area you have to keep up your speed while managing your balance. So, yes, blades are tricky on soft snow. But except for that they are awesome. They are very light and comfortable, you can turn very very fast and it is very fun to ride the snow sideways at steep slopes. Your hands are also free which is rather liberating. You can gain velocity by pushing the snow as if you are skating when it is flat and you are about to stop. They also fit inside your trunk :D

alright. so I would consider myself an expert skier*. first of all, you can definitely skate on downhill skis, it's just harder and you need to use the poles to help. I actually grew up doing cross-country skiing, so the skills kinda transfer. *the issue I have with snowblades is the lack of stability.* at least for someone at my level, it limits your top speed a great deal on all terrain as well as your braking and carving power, which makes anywhere that's icy or even groomed much less comfortable than on skis. I'm not someone that goes to the snowpark, but I love taking rollers or hitting big air off sudden drops on the trail (more common in the alps or rockies). that's not happening with snowblades because they're not stable enough to get a safe landing even if your take-off is perfect. this is a serious problem if I'm going anywhere over 40km/h, which is common. finally, on the rough stuff like moguls or in the trees, the snowblaes are fun because they're a little more agile, but again the lack of stability reduces the speed at which you can do _everything_ and a sudden drop followed by a sudden rise (common in the trees) makes you land on your tailbone more often than not.
note: as for those poles, yeah the ones elite skiers smash through in races are much bendier than the one you hit. they have special ones so they don't hurt themselves as much, but of course they still have hand- and shin-guards as well as a special attachment on their helmets to protect their jaws. the normal ones you see on the hill are bamboo or synthetic and are super stiff. hitting them is very much not recommended. I can tell you that from experience.
*though by no means at the level of someone who races, I can do double blacks at Tremblant (icy) or in BC (huge moguls, lots of powder, extremely steep), but I also love cruising at high (giant slalom-sized turns) or medium speed (slalom turns) on the groomed stuff as well as taking on sous-bois (tree skiing). I'm from Montreal and I've been lucky enough to have skied in Quebec, BC and Alberta, as well as in several places in the Alps and even a couple in Scotland. my experience here transfers well to inline skating, as it's made me very comfortable on steep up- and downhills as well as on rough surfaces like cobblestones or streets with lots of cracks. my first love will always be cross-country skiing, even though I'm worse, relatively speaking.

aaahhh. UA-cam is full of examples of skiboarders jumping off stuff and going waaaay faster than most rec skiers will ever want to try. Do you know the original Winter X Games featured skiboards? Yes, longer skis are faster, more stable and have more float. They have their place. That place is not on the feet of most skiers. Because they're also more cumbersome, more dangerous, more expensive, and less fun. This is from a forty+ year sometimes professional skier who has lived at the base of the Rockies and the Alps and who ACTUALLY tried a good pair of skiboards then immediately switched and never looked back.

I am a fair snowboarder. However, I really want to start getting into these. Do you think I would be able to pick them up quickly having never skied before?
I don’t really do tricks or hit the rails. I just enjoy riding I think the control of these is really appealing to me. Also roller bladed a lot as a kid and was pretty good.
What size should I get for size 10 men’s? And what is a good enough brand? Need info. Ski trip in February

Looks cool, but I think I'd rather snowboard, and I suggest your try it. To me, it's a much more Zen feeling, using your hips to groove down the mountain.

They are fun but I Broke my leg on ski blades in France, you maje it look so easy. Sorry they are not popular in Europe , guess because people go a bit crazy and turn into speed crazy riders .
What kind of ski blades did you have? Ski blades can also come with release bindings to reduce the likelihood of a broken leg.

A little advice from a ski (rental ) tech: The reason skis are long is the stability vs speed idea. Short skis offer more control because the obvious being less ski, however you lose the necassary stability for speed, long skis are the oposite. Now Im not saying everyone should be ripping down the hill at 110 mph. That said ski blades are fun on groomers but thats all they're good for, they (and shorter skis in general) dont preform anywhere near as well in literally anything other than groomed runs. Longer skis offer the stability needed for skiing bumps/trees/crud. in other words an appropriate length ski means less energy spent and more fun had
That might all be true for the cheaper relatively older, lesser-designed skiboards like the Elan's he's on. But modern skiboards from places like Revl8 and Summit have much more refined shape and ski about as well as longer skis in most situations. They're stable at speed, have float, dig in and carve nicely. They perform better than long skis in the trees & bumps and can float through the deepest powder. Really.
@@brimstone33 I was interested in skiboards so have watched some videos about them, but tbh never seen one, that would show them to be close to long skis then it comes to carving or being stable at speed, although they can be fast then you are going straight down. Idk about float, but i'm skeptical about that, too

A few things. You’ll never be able to ride these in powder or anything not groomed and don’t lean back in powder ever, and certainly not on snow blades. No tail to hold you up. I rode these once with other instructors at whistler years ago. They are just awful. All you’ll ever do is skid turn down groomed runs. And they look ridiculous. Just stick with skis or snowboards

Different strokes I guess? I get it though, I like shorter skis sometimes, they're small, light and nimble for quick turns and tricks. But this seems a bit over the top.
