A DEER CAMP in America's BIGGEST SWAMP | Hunting Deer with Dogs

- In this video we went to a deer camp in the Atchafalya Basin. The Atchafalaya Basin is America's largest swamp and a national treasure. Deer hunting with dogs is a long-standing tradition that these hunters are proud to be a part of.
This video was funded by the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area. www.atchafalaya.org - Спорт
Gee, thanks for taking me back to my beginning of deer hunting (1965). Since my father died when I was 7, I never was taught much about firearms or deer hunting until I got to hunt with a friend of mine at a deer camp in the Ouachita Mts. in Arkansas. The men at the camp ranged anywhere from their mid 40's to their 80's. I learned a lot about deer hunting through them, and I also learned how to spin tall tales, cuss, play poker, and freeze your rear off without complaining. IT WAS GREAT!
Sounds like a damn good time

Any hunting or fishing camp always seems to be about friendship and food. There are some great memories made and stories told and luckily I can say I have been part of both. The Atchafalaya Basin is definitely a national treasure.
Just need to get you down there with the squirrel dog
@@OutsidetheLevees I don't think my pup would make the trip. I have never had a dog that gets a car sick as she does.
Some of my first deer hunts were with dogs. We didn't have tracking collars for the dogs so often times we hunted deer for 2 hours and dogs for 2 days! I transitioned from a dog hunter to a still hunter then to a Traditional Bowhunter! Bowhunting teaches you so much more about deer since you spend so much more watching deer than shooting deer! Great Times!
Yes but bow hunting it’s very solitary and kind of boring for folks like me lol. But yes I can see why you learn so much about deer doing it. Love hearing about your journey as a hunter. Thanks for watching!
@@OutsidetheLevees I do love the camp fellowship and having the kids participate!
WOW!!!! What memories this video brings back... a huge THANK YOU Jared for sharing a LA tradition with everyone!!!!
yes indeed. always working hard for my subscribers
I think it's the freedom of the swamp. You can just relax and be yourself. No judgement!! Everyone looks after ya. Makes sure you got a plate, a cold beer, a warm place to sleep. You'll want for nothing. Just good clean fun with great Americans!!
You nailed
It brother
Couldn’t have said it better
That's how I started deer hunting back in the 60s as a young boy. Loved it
Thanks for watching!
Good one Jared!
A non hunter will never understand “the hunt”. Your friend summed it up best, he doesn’t need to kill a deer, he enjoys listening to his dogs.Watching a retriever or pointer work is a beautiful thing to see!
Well said my friend. Thank you so much for the support
Brings back memories. I was born and raise in South Louisiana. Still live there but now I hunt on land I own in Mississippi but I sure cherish my days of hunting the swamps.
Thats awesome. Thanks for watching
For me, it was the Panama Hunting club, which is now primarily the Maurepas Wildlife Managements area. Great Video
That's awesome. Good ole days
Where our club hunted is mostly Maurepas WMA as well. I still hunt it, but Ida really tore it up bad. I went scouting last October and it was bad. 80% of the trees that aren't Cypress were downed by the storm. I didn't even try to hunt it the last 2 seasons. I'm gonna go back out soon just to check it out for next season.
Maureps is a lot nastier than the basin. It takes special people to hunt it.
I love it all about family and friends and making sure the young ones are there to keep the tradition rolling along that’s for taking us along
Amen brother. Thanks for watching
I live in Oregon but the people are the same when they enjoy the true American pastime of hunting and family Thanks for sharing
I love that. Thanks for watching g
Yes sir, love the sound of the hound Old school for sure!! remember those days well!!!❤
Amen Nate. Nothing like it.
I grew up hunting deer with hounds in Northeast Mississippi. It’s a long standing way to hunt in the Deep South. Have not dog hunted in several years, but its still very active here. I enjoy setting in my tree stand and hear a pack chasing one in the distance.
Got to run dogs with an Uncle in Leaksville, Ms as a kid. Them hounds baying thru the pines stays with ya your whole life…
Well said
My brother had the Walkers running the hills in Redwood, Mississippi in Grandmammy bottom! What memories! The excitement of of the hounds! The blood gets to pumping! The sound of the hounds have gone quiet now.
First deer hunt I ever went on in the ‘50’s was in the river swamps North of Mobile. They used dogs and I missed a really big buck. I got a good shot but it was a shot gun only club hunt. Needless to say my Dad’s Browning Auto 5 and 00 buck did not get ‘er done.
Those boys will remember those hunts all their lives!😊
That’s beautiful memories. Wish I could have been there to see it
Brings back lots of memories. I hunted the basin and all around it.
We did man drives. I got my first deer on a drive.
Awesome video. I hunted deer with dogs in North Carolina years ago. What an experience. I'd love to do it again.
I’d love to hunt the Carolinas
@@OutsidetheLevees do you guys allow non-residents at the club?
Looks like great fun. I've only seen the Atchafalaya from the I-10 causeway. I stopped at a rest stop where they had a visitor center telling all about the swamp and the construction of the interstate through it. There was a really pretty young woman in there who was a naturalist or something with the State and was redoing and up keeping the displays. Free awesome Community coffee there as well. I spent close to an hour there. I have dogged deer before though. Got invited to the oldest deer club in Alabama called Dollarhide. One morning they held drives with dogs. Was not sure I was going to like it...or even approve! But man it was super exciting and extremely interesting. Man, deer running away from the approach of the dogs....deer running towards the dogs trying to get through the drivers...and deer doing the stealth approach. Rules were no does and bucks of six points or better. I guess I saw an over six pointer slink by who had three points up but I couldn't see the other side and a lot of deer there don't have the brow tines. He slunk by quick and then just disappeared into thin air like a savvy buck will do. Would love to hunt that way again. Cost me 93 dollars though...you see I'd only hunted bird with a plug in my pump 12ga....never deer...but the guy who invited me said you didn't have to have a plug in for deer and had me take it out and load 5 rounds. Well I forgot to put it back in and went dove hunting in Georgia in September almost a year later. I loaded two and chambered one and then put the third one in the tube. Checked to make sure the youth 1100 20ga I'd borrowed for my son had a plug but never checked mine because I'd only ever hunted birds and it was always plugged. A female Fed ranger ticketed me after I think the male ranger was going to just warn me. Then the female walked off and the guy said...you can continue hunting and just cut a stick off that bush you are sitting next to and use it for a plug. I told him I knew that and could have done it...and likely would have done it...if I'd remembered it wasn't in there, during the almost thirty minutes while I watched you guys checking the end and far side of the field. I've been so religiously aboveboard when it comes to following the regs that it kind of pissed me off!
That’s amazing man. Wish I could have been there. Thanks for watching!
Good job everyone !!! Appreciate y'all for sharing . C u next week 🤠
Thanks for watching
Fantastic video Jared! You hit deer camp perfectly. Brought back some great old memories
Thank you so much!
Great vid. A lot of us grew up hunting this way…thanks for sharing
Virginia dog hunter here. Awesome video of how deer camp should be! Keep them runnin!!!
Thanks! Will do!
Some of my best memories as a kid were from deer camp in east Tx out by Caddo Lake with my dad, uncles, cousins and grandpa.
Love the tradition...hang on to it!
Man I miss this! Awesome video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video love seeing you show the heritage! But I grew up where dogs are not allowed to run deer so I personally still don't agree with it. But it's your heritage and up bringing and I still like the video and like to learn about different cultures
I respect that brother. Thanks for watching. God bless.
Another great video thanks for sharing again 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Thanks for a weekend at Hunting Camp!
Looks like a good time 😊,
JO JO IN VT 💞💨❄️⛄
Yes indeed.
Good friends, family, fun, deer is just a bonus, enjoyed it guys.
You got that right!
Back when I was a boy hunting with dogs is all we knew. Great video. It sure brought back great memories.
Amen brother
wow what a amazing time that would be!! Thank you for sharing this
I have lived long enough to realize that I never really fully appreciated what I had when I had it. What you are getting to experience is more valuable than money and more important than power. Friendship, brotherhood and good food. Thank you GOD for all your blessings.
Most of us don’t brother. Thanks for the reminder
Nothing like a deer camp. I bet there is some good squirrel hunting and fishing in that area. Great video, Thanks
Def some good fishing. Not sure about the squirrels. Thanks for watching.
Good friends, good hunt and good times. Life don't come any better than that. That's the good life. God bless.
amen
Good video. Showing the old way. Beautiful setting.
Amen to that. A perfect place
That was some great looking food. Love seeing dogs work!
The best!
Awesome deer camp!! 🦌 👍🏻
Thank you!
Awesome video, it bought back many memories of hunting with my dad at the hunting camp. He loved to rabbit hunt with dogs and when I hear hunting dogs 'running' after their game, it is like music to my ears. The Black and Tan dog was doing his thing and pushing those deer, he deserved that pork chop.
Amen to that. Thanks for watching.
Man I'm in my early 30s. I haven't heard a horn blown like that in 20 + yrs. Gave me goose bumps and brought back many many memories.
Yeah man it's a dying art for sure
@Outside the Levees nothin beat the sound, of some hounds singing that sweet swamp music.
Great video! Learned a lot.
Thank you so much for watching
Man, I sure miss hearing the hounds on a scent! Those were some great times with the New Sarpy Deer Club! We had 3,000 acres in the Maurepas Swamp. 2,000 of the acres became a Management Area around 2001 or so, and the last 1,000 acres we lost the lease to a couple of lawyers in 2005.
Amen brother. Keeping the tradition alive
Again nothing better than hanging out with ya mates, Cheers from North Queensland Australia. Where we peel prawns. Great video Thanks
Thanks for watching mate!
Lots of fun and friends and family. Good times and Good Eating!
Amen to that.
Wow that's a lot of bunk beds in da camp........shrimp stew with eggs looked REAL GOOD
Oh yeah. It's a fun bunch of folks. Thanks for watching.
All I can say is, great video!!
Yes indeed!
Great video, I have never dog hunted before but it looks fun.
It's a damn good time/
These are some really well done and interesting videos you are producing here.
Thank you brother. I work hard on them. God bless.
This is awesome. Good stuff!
Dude I was just thinking about you yesterday
Let’s get together soon
Great video I really enjoyed that!
Thank you so much
I've watched this twice I really enjoy it, it reminds me of deer camp in Northern, Maine. I hope you make another derr camp video this year.
That's living the life would love to try that looks like fun. Looked like that area would be some good crawfishing all up in their.
yeah I think when the water gets right they catch. Thanks for watching. God bless.
Great video! No place like the deer camp.
Well said
Awesome camp
Definitely. Thanks for watching
Great video!!! Well done!! We run dogs about an hour East of there!
That’s awesome man. Hope y’all had a good year
Awesome video man, I grew up hunting with dogs over on the north shore. We didn’t set foot in a deer stand until we moved to Texas. Memories hunting with my Dad and my Uncles that I will no doubt see clearly for the rest of my life!
That's beautiful memories man. God bless.
I'm from the Northshore and grew up hunting with dogs. Great memories!!
@@OutsidetheLevees yes sir, CB radios and dogs boxes in Toyota 4x4 pickups on p-78 buckshot mudders haha ahhh The unmistakable roar of those tires on pavement. I still use Dads old Remington 270 pump with the beaver tail fore end.
@@tigercat73 we hunted east of Abita off the Talisheek highway on the bird farm.

Appreciate you watching T
Love it !!
Heck yeah!
Banger!
Thanks my dude. This was a fun one

Wow!! No wonder y’all are so skinny 🤣😂!!! Wish I could experience it too!!
Dogs are great help to hunters!
Yes indeed
Good living here 👍🏿
It sure is
This looks soooo friggin fun!!! I can see why it's been done for decades!! I went on my first dog hunt this year here in central Florida. It's so dang exciting!!
Man I want to deer hunt down in Florida one day
@@OutsidetheLevees and I wanna hunt Louisiana, so let's make it happen lol. I have a good friend that does a pretty successful podcast here in Florida. Y'all should link up. Really enjoy your channel brother!! Absolute quality!!
I'm in Panhandle. I use airedales and a wolf hound. I hunt bears, cougars, coons and hogs too! Where do you hunt and what kinda dogs? Jimmy was my husband and passed February.
@@jamesconner8374 first of all I'm so sorry for your loss😥. I dog hunted in Ocala national forest. I don't own dogs myself my buddy does and has dog hunted for 40 years.
Very interesting techniques, a lot different from me walking into my Ohio woods, picking a spot and waiting. Awesome video.
Yeah man it's a fun way to hunt for sure. Thanks for watching.
We run dogs in eastern NC. I grew up doing it and hope it never goes away. Nothing like it.
Amen to that
That's pretty cool. I'd love to bring a truck load down there and experience it 1 time. It's way different from the way we do it here in NC.
I miss being in the lease. I hunted every one of those stand lines. Brought back some good memories. Killed my first deer a 3 point buck while hunting there. Russel drove the dogs and the deer to me. Great times. Blood bath and all!
That’s amazing
Deer camps are fading I plan on having one with my boys as long as I can
Amen. Hope y’all enjoy your camp
i only wish this one was a longer video, but can't let the camera and editing get in the way of an important hunt like that.
Thanks brother. I try to do 14-22 min videos for the most part. I like them to move quickly because people's attention span is pretty short. God bless and thanks for watching
I’ve hunted all over and killed allot of deer but running dogs in kisatchie in north Louisiana was by farrrr my favorite memories. I’ll never forget those old men dad and the sounds of those dogs.
Well said. Wish I could have been there
Russell blowing that horn. Get um cuz
It was awesome!
Man I love that cabin I want to build one over in my north pasture only I want a 2 story cabin with a walk out on balcony for overseeing my pasture in
Dude it was so cool. Hope you get one!
@@OutsidetheLevees thank you
I'm 71 yo and loved hearing the dogs run when growing up and hunting in Arkansas and the Mississippi delta on both sides of the river in Mississippi. I also never have to kill another deer because it's about fellowship and teaching the younger ones the value of what they are experiencing. Do you by any chance take on any new members? Gotta ask. LOL
Thank you for sharing those beautiful memories. I am sure they are always looking for new hunters.
This is how we do it too on the Pascagoula River in Mississippi. We also have a houseboat for our deer camp. Man Id like to see more of these. My pawpaw started our club back in the early 60s. He and my daddy both passed but we carrying on the tradition for as long as they keep letting us.
I’d love to talk about it. Shoot me an email outsidethelevees@gmail.com
Hello great video. Love watching your videos. Keep them awesome videos coming. Im getting married in July this year could i get a shout out on your next video
I definitely will. Thank you so much for the ongoing support.
@@OutsidetheLevees your welcome
I live in Warren Arkansas, a great place to deer, hog, rabbit, and racoon hunting.. I really like this video, but please wash the meat before cooking it. You have no idea of the hands and care of the cutting machines to trust not rinsing the meat before preparing....The only meat you can't rinse is ground meat..Thanks again for this great video
Thanks for the tip and for watching. God bless
Jared great video! Please, please, please give us some more videos of the dog hunting. I grew up hunting in the basin in Butte La Rose on what they call the Island and hunted with dogs from 1983 until 1998 and I miss it terribly. Nobody has these videos of dog hunting in the basin. I would love to get back into a hunting club that runs dogs. You would not by any chance be looking for members?
Brother I am not a member so I can’t say for sure. But yes I would agree that we need more dog hunting videos. I will be prepared next year.
I don’t necessarily agree with deer hunting with dogs but nonetheless I think it’s awesome you made a video showing all parts
All good brother thanks for watching
Hound hunting is a part of all of our history. Embrace it
Well said my friend
@Outside the Levees where I'm from we run them outlaw hounds. It's a heritage we fight to keep alive, likely the ties from our old south ancestry
Sure do miss those days in East Texas. They stopped our heritage.
Damn sorry to hear that. Thanks for watching
Is there alot of squirrels id like to come down and squirrel hunt guys id go opposite of you all I'm in western North Carolina some flat land would be nice this is awsome guys
Not too many squirrels that we saw
You guys are Hunting in DC ??? Thats the biggest swamp i know of
Lol. Man I’d say a few things but they’d prob run me off UA-cam lol
Oh mamma, a 250 on that flatboat must get it cookin'
It's a beast for sure
One of the main things I miss about moving north and commercialization of hunting. My kids literally have no idea how it used to be. Now unless you hunt overcrowded public, know someone, or have $$$ you are shite out of luck. The "family" isn't there any more. It's sad.
Gotta make the best out of it
Good times and brings back good memories but….bro that chicken wing needed to stay on the fire a little longer. Pink is for beef.
Thanks for watching. It was plenty cooked. Google myoglobin and pink chicken
What’s up brother. Surgery day finely is here. Talk soon bro
Hell yeah man sending good thoughts your way
I’m a girl but I love hunting with my dad and run them dog in Louisiana where I am from
That’s awesome. Thanks so much for watching
Warning no deer were harmed in the making of this video.?.😂 looked like a fun deer camp though.
yeah lot of does were jumped this weekend. One buck jumped early and got out. Thanks for watching.
The videos are getting evern better I liked the story's they told us
Thank you so much for saying that. I’m working hard for y’all
You guys ever encountered a rou garou ?
Them Shelly's still hunt out there
Not sure
@@OutsidetheLevees I'm pretty sure they out there be safe have fun thanks for sharing
Cool we're the hogs great 👍 place for hogs.
Yep
I have a question, isn't there alligators?
Dogs running around could they run into one?
Gators are pretty docile with the cold water temps.
When the temps are below 60, the gators sort of go dormant, just like the snakes do. But let the sun come out and you have a 70 degree day, you may see a few of them. They don't eat very much when it's cold, their metabolism slows WAY down. They basically hibernate, they will bury themselves in mud underwater until it warms up a bit.
@@wilschober3848 thanks for the info! Appreciate it. I am really glad I don't have to worry about Gators up here. Maybe a angry raccoon
Southern tradition running hounds
Ready for the season already!
Is this at Camp Irene?
I don’t think so. I haven’t heard of that
Like to see a coon hunting video and a squirrel hunting video
Coming soon I promise
