i think Cheryl Waters is one of a kind interviewer . she just hits all the good question all the time. and that was one hell of an emotional set by Amanda
I only got "back" to Amanda about four weeks ago when I saw her in an hour-long interview with Brian W. Foster, and then I saw that she was performing pretty close to where I live and immediately got the ticket. I expected some good music and interesting, wise words. What I DIDN'T expect was a genuine, thoroughly honest soul striptease that connected to me on a level that I normally hide deep, deeeeeeeeeeep down, away from myself and everybody else. It was the second time I really felt not joy, but hurt during a concert, and it was one of the best experiences of my entire life because it was so damn cathartic. I won't say this will be the same for every single person, and I am quite sure some people even hate what Amanda does. But I personally cherish what she does: Put everything and more into her art and taking you to dark places where people usually don't wanna go, but it's okay now because somebody is with you. Beautiful. And as a bonus SHE'S DAMN FUCKIN' FUNNY! :)
The way Amanda plays her instrument, it really deserves its full name of pianoforte. Incredibly dynamic performance, such a welcome relief from a world awash with overly quantised and compressed commodity music.
About "Drowning in the sound". Dear, Amanda, what can I say? So good that almost hurts inside. Like a powerful emotional moment that kept us disconnected from the world outside! Cheers from the country that was once all happiness!
I think I'll be buying There Will Be No Intermission because of this video, which surprises me. I've loved your writing, you as a person (what I know of you, & you make yourself known), & your lyrics since the last millennia, but loving your music has come like someone who was in an arranged marriage about thirty years ago & has now fallen in love with the person they married.
I'm so grateful for this album, because I know that next time someone important in my life dies I know what to listen to to make me feel better and have some catharsis
I went through over half a dozen thoughts attempting to express what Amanda Palmer's sharing does to me. None of them are adequate. She's such a powerful sharer of emotive expression that you can't help but to be it by what she shares. I wouldn't have it any other way.
I used to dislike Amanda a lot, but I grew and so did my opinions, and now I see that she is just a really genuine person living out her genuine life and that is very touching and beautiful. Also her speaking voice is a delight in this video, I almost prefer it to the actual songs oops ♥
I love this woman. I’ve been going to her shows in SF since the early Dresden Dolls days. I saw this tour first row at The Warfield. She’s incredibly talented. It just kills me. Drowning in Sound is my favorite.
I've been a fan of Ms Fucking Palmer for years, as well as this KEXP series. Tech production up to snuff, check, Amanda doing something different than in her various collaborations over the years, check. Comparison to Tiny Desk.... uhh, hard to do with words. What I never noticed before was that KEXP's studio piano was a Baldwin. I have one from the 1960's, that my mother really wanted for herself, but justified with two kids needing music lessons. And they remain examples of quality economy cost points. I ended up buying a Seiko chromatic tuner when Android apps hadn't yet advanced, but hardware electronics advanced. I learned that there was way more art to isolating sets of 2 or 3 strings, or hearing if a wire had crystallized metallurgy and didn't carry the same overtones as others in the set, than just being able to get notes on perfect pitch more easily than with tuning forks and octave relationships. By then the piano industry collapsed, and while I have two friends with a large shop who do cosmetic and action rebuilds on Steinways, Baldwin was sold off to Yamaha. I'd imagine in Seattle humidity is more like Japan, but Yamaha staff had painful learning experiences as to how much humidity varies around the US, as to dry regions, wet regions, and regions of huge annual variation. The Baldwin experience taught Yamaha's staff that there were elements of global wood and cast iron and drawn steel instrument making arts, they'd not yet learned. I'd guess KEXP likely was gifted such a piano by someone aging out and downsizing, or moving, and recognized how that model in excellent condition is better for artists than a higher end brand in need of restoration. Just as in Amanda's lyrics different snippets pop out over time, in all the KEXP shows I've watched over some years, that connection to personal experience as well as international tech and economics intertwined with musical arts, didn't grab my attention until this show.
I watch and/or listen to every performance of this song I can find. I've been a fan since the early Dresden Dolls days, and this is, hands down, my favorite Amanda Palmer song yet.
I fucking love the story prior to Drowning In The Sound--Amanda Palmer is just so wonderful and perfect---Thank you KEXP for ALWAYS choosing the best of the best
15,000 people giving @ $3/month? Wow!! That's 45g per month, amazing! Over half a million per year, Amanda can do her thing AND help others with that kind of dough coming in, what a wonderful opportunity!
@divina6 It's THEIR disposable income not yours. I'd like to see a receipt of all the charities and non-profits you've donated to since you're the ultimate on morality.
@divina6 It's easy to judge where funds go. But, the people donating on Patreon aren't the ones with the ridiculous amounts of money. They're not the ones who could fix the problems, and still have more than 80% of the population. I think you should keep that in mind. The people of small means are not the ones who need to fix these problems.

Hi Cheryl! Another great production, thank you. YOU are the Terri Gross of music, always quality and compelling and the music is great too!!! Love this and you!
Amazing to listen to this now years later, before she got stuck in New Zealand because of COVID, then to come home to so many abortion bans, and everything else. Wow.
actually this is song was the first one - been listening to her since 2009 - that instantly made me think of Tori. also Sigur Ros and Moloko ( because of the instrumentation in the record version )
I love Amanda. Since live Dresden dolls. But capitalism is why you have the freedom to make your art baby girl. This stuff doesn't happen in China. But bless your young soul. Generous Patreon does it again! Keep supporting the raw artists people. So visceral!!!
It is political, when you sing it with a PMS and your neighbor is a polish woman in reproductive age, who might have to make a choice one day and will have to travel elsewhere for it.
horrible horrible music , no tempo at all off pitch voice. P.S. Her "Aye" shrieks are just horrible , dont even wanna go to lyrics , thumbsdown from me
As a musician, I would disagree with what you said from a technical perspective. Intentional imprecision is a well known approach to making music, especially in this era of quantized beats and autotuned vocals. If it's just a style that doesn't work for you, I get that.
Totally agree! This woman is what's wrong with the current time we live in . Can't stand her arrogance, getting her nose in politics, talking about her sexuality endlessly, and she is very unattractive.

Aran Goyoaga i think she’s a shaman
i think Cheryl Waters is one of a kind interviewer . she just hits all the good question all the time. and that was one hell of an emotional set by Amanda
anonyless yeah she seems lovely . She feels it . That response “ yes just take a deep breath “ or there abouts.. she gets it
wow Drowning in the Sound has me crying.
Cheryl Waters is sweet.
Still remember when Amanda was a member of Regina Spektor's fan forum and would promote her band Dresden Dolls on there. That was like 15 years ago.
I saw Dresden Dolls live several times. :D
I miss Dresden Dolls. She made a post recently about possibly doing another Dresden Dolls music project. It made me so happy.
@@vanadium789 Their wikipedia's page says something new comes out this year
@@vanadium789 They 'announced' that project at their 2018 gig. I really hope they get to it. o_o
The way Amanda plays her instrument, it really deserves its full name of pianoforte. Incredibly dynamic performance, such a welcome relief from a world awash with overly quantised and compressed commodity music.
Cold Animal agreed, this is genius work
fuck yes it is.
Amanda Palmera is so brilliant! ❤ Her art is just getting better and better every year.
Amanda is my favorite artist in any area because she is so honest and sensitive and brave. And of course so goddanm talanted

Drowning in sound : the voice is her pain
The piano is her anger . Perfect
I bought tickets for her show in Portland a couple years ago, and ended up not being able to go. Still on my bucket list of performers to see live!
True blue and a top notch artist. I like her style and her concept of being a musician.
Amanda Palmer is a national treasure.

Awesome..why have I not heard of her before?.. but I'm so grateful I have now..thanks Amanda
When she sang into the piano to have the strings sympathetically vibrate I got chills
Thanks Amanda Palmer. I love you and even though we haven't crossed paths in person, you've helped me so much in my life. Thanks 🤗
Why does she make me cry? Love.
Listening to Drowning in the Sound. For the 1st time. It brought tears. Simply from your emotion, Amanda! BRILLIANT! thx for this interview, KEXP!
first time listener to her music, and i likes.

Amanda Palmer is devastatingly good. tears and cheers.. tears and cheers

LYRICS
DROWNING IN THE SOUND
You worship the sun and you're aching for change
But you keep starving your heart
You used to have sisters
You don't anymore
You worship the sun
But you keep feeding the dark
And I'm out in the yard
With my son and my daughter
And the sky is all black and I think we should start running...
Running from the water
And everybody's yelling
Yelling that they're coming
But I don't see a single soul
They're all so busy yelling
Not one of them is hearing
The hissing from the bottom of the boat
I got some feelings up my sleeve
I got a compass in my arm
I got a needle in my heart
It's gonna tell us where we are
South by south west
Two miles from town
I can't get out
I can't look down
If you can hear
If you're around
I'm over here
I'm over here
I'm watching everyone I love
Drowning in the sound
You worship the sun
But the moon's in the way
So get your armaments out
She's always looking for trouble
She's gonna get what's been coming to her
She's switching the tides and we can't have that shit around
The television they're blaring out a warning:
That our natural state is drowning
That our natural state is burning
And you're trying to help
And you're clicking for change
And you're calling it out
And you're adding your name
And you're marching for peace
But you're lynching the bitch
That got up in your face
How else they gonna to take it seriously?
South by south west
Two miles from town
I can't get out
I can't look down
If you can hear
If you're around
I'm over here
I'm over here
I'm watching
Everyone I love
Drowning in the sound
And your body is a temple
And the temple is a prison
And the prison's overcrowded
And the inmates know it's flooding
And the body politic is getting sicker by the minute
And the media's not fake
It's just very
Inconvenient
Do you ever feel like this should be officially the end?
And that you should be the one to do the ending but you can't?
And do you ever feel that everyone is slowly letting go
Do you ever feel that... that incredibly alone?
And they're saying not to panic
And it's like a broken record
As if anybody knows what that is
And they're saying that we'll manage
It's the hottest one on record
And they're saying that that's just the way it is
Now I can taste it coming
I can taste it with my tongue
And my children are so heavy
But I pick them up and run
And I know I'll have to swim soon
When the water gets too high
I'll keep on holding them above me
I'll keep on holding them and crying
South by south west
Two miles from town
I can't get out
I can't look down
If you can hear
If you're around
I'm over here
I'm over here
I'm watching
Everyone I love
Everyone I love
Everyone on earth
Drowning in the sound
You worship the sun and you're aching for change
But you keep starving your heart
You used to have sisters
You don't anymore
You worship the sun
But you keep feeding the dark
VOICEMAIL FOR JILL
Jill it's Amanda just waving
From London
I know that you're
Going tomorrow,
The hardest decision
And I've been on the side
Of the phone for a month
And I know you're in hell and
You know that I know what you're feeling
Life's such a bitch, isn't it?
When you have a baby,
They throw you a party
And then when you die
They get together for a cry
But no one's gonna
Celebrate you
No one's gonna bring
You cake
And no one's gonna
Shower you with flowers
The doctor won't
Congratulate you
No one on that
Pavement's gonna
Shout at you that
Your heart also matters
I'm not sure that you'll
Get this in time
I don't know if you're
Checking your voicemail at all
But in case it's the morning
And you're off at the green line
And walking through Copley
I want you to stop for a second,
I want you to listen
You don't need to offer
The right explanation
You don't need to beg for r
Rdemption or ask for forgiveness
And you don't need a
Court room inside of your head
Where you're acting as judge
And accused and defendant and witness
It's a strange grief but it's grief
Look at all the women in the street
You know the statistics, Jill
Even though they may not help
Isn't it amazing
How we can never tell
Who is in an identical hell
No one's gonna celebrate you
No one's gonna bring you cake
And no one's gonna
Shower you with flowers
The doctor won't congratulate you
No one on that pavement's gonna
Shout at you that your heart also matters
No one's gonna compliment you
No one's gonna nod their head
And wink in league with
What you are pursuing
No one's gonna tie surprise balloons
Onto your desk at work
And no one's gonna
Ask you how you're doing
But I'll be back in
Boston by next Thursday
Why don't I come over?
I can bring some friends
If you want us to come
We can bring you cake
And we can bring you flowers
We can bring you wine
And we can talk for hours
Ukulele by request
We'll throw you the best
Abortion shower

Everyone's reaching to put on a seatbelt
But this kind of ride comes without them
I want you to think of me sitting and singing beside you
I wish we could meet all the people behind us in line
The climb to the crest is less frightening with someone to clutch you
But isn't it nice when we're all afraid at the same time
And it's just a ride
It's just a ride
And you've got the choice to get off anytime that you like
It's just a ride
It's just a ride
The alternative is nothingness
We might as well give it a try
Everyone's terrified that they'll be justified by the collapse that will happen
Everyone's placing their bets just in case
The whole thing's a profound disappointment
Everyone's trying to stay on the side where the water's just boiling more slowly
Frogs in a pot, well that's one thing I've got
At least some of the frogs in here know me
I want you to think of me sitting and singing beside you
The chain pulls us up and we know that we're all gonna dive
The blur and the noise of the screaming can blind and distract you
But isn't it nice when we all can scream at the same time
And it's just a ride
It's just a ride
And you've got the choice to get off anytime that you like
It's just a ride
It's just a ride
The alternative's nothingness
Might as well give it a try
And as we all go down
And as we all go round
And as we pitch from side to side
Everything is gonna be alright
Everyone's getting real scared to come out because coming out's going down badly
Feel the city breaking and everybody's shaking
And I just want someone to hold me
Some are too scared to let go of their children
And some are too scared now to have them
Suicide, homicide, genocide, man, that's a fuck-ton of sides you can choose from
I want you to think of me sitting and singing beside you
I wish we could meet all the people who got left behind
The ride is so loud it can make you think nobody's listening
But isn't it nice when we all can cry at the same time
And it's just a ride
It's just a ride
And you've got the choice to get off anytime that you like
It's just a ride
It's just a ride
The alternative's nothingness
Might as well give it a try
And as we all go down
And as we all go round
And as we switch from side to side
Everything is gonna be just fine
Everyone you love is gonna die
Hopefully, this song will come remind you
That's it's just a ride
It's just a ride
From the sister you miss
To the father you don't want to write
It's just a ride
It's just a ride
From the lover you loved to the one that you're frightened to find
It's just a ride
It's just a ride
From the baby you lost to the one that you're growing inside
Come out darling
And don't you cry
It's just a ride
Great radio station, great artist, great music. I am indebted to you.
Everyone's too scared to open their eyes up
But everyone's too scared to close them
Everyone's frightened they don't know what's coming
But everyone's frightened of knowing
Everyone's reading the rules of engagement
And everyone's starting to doubt them
Everyone's reaching to put on a seatbelt
But this kind of ride comes without them
[Pre-Chorus]
I want you to think of me sitting and singing beside you
I wish we could meet all the people behind us in line
The climb to the crest is less frightening with someone to clutch you
But isn't it nice when we're all afraid at the same time?
[Chorus]
And it's just a ride
It's just a ride
And you've got the choice to get off anytime that you like
It's just a ride
It's just a ride
The alternative is nothingness
We might as well give it a try
[Verse 2]
Everyone's terrified that they'll be justified by the collapse that will happen

Hi Cheryl! Another great production, thank you. YOU are the Terri Gross of music, always quality and compelling and the music is great too!!! Love this and you!
She is gorgeous
This year I was supposed to watch her live in Boston, but COVID happened. I really hope to see her live at least once in my life.
Thank you for this. I love you, Amanda.
utterly spellbinding
KEXP thank you from Australia.

And yes I am going to contribute to a million of the views on here. CHILLS
This video made me sub on patreon for her.

and beautifull as fuck
This is fucking awesome! I've been waiting (somewhat patiently) for this since Amanda posted on Instigram. So happy to see it now!
absolutely incredible...
No one on the street is gonna shout at you that your heart also matters...
...but it does.
BRILLIANCE !!
So powerful
Oh! i love her sooo much!
Man that song was cool , the Sound
Drowning in sound here is way better than the album version.
Brilliant
She's great. and correct.
Te amo Amanda, te amoooo!
AMANDAAAA!!!!!!
She is simply gorgeous inside and outside!
Amazing to listen to this now years later, before she got stuck in New Zealand because of COVID, then to come home to so many abortion bans, and everything else. Wow.
la amo a esta señora
First time hearing her, reminds me of Tori Amos. Magical, magnificent.
actually this is song was the first one - been listening to her since 2009 - that instantly made me think of Tori. also Sigur Ros and Moloko ( because of the instrumentation in the record version )
Oh that was so good..
6:37 for music
Powerful and sweet
"They won't play this song on the radio"
;)
She's simply amazing
5:15 am, listening to this and crying my fucking guts out.
I love Amanda. Since live Dresden dolls. But capitalism is why you have the freedom to make your art baby girl. This stuff doesn't happen in China. But bless your young soul. Generous Patreon does it again! Keep supporting the raw artists people. So visceral!!!
I could look and listen to her down turned mouth all day . Gorgeous
Damn this is beautiful ❤️
Have she and Tori Amos ever collaborate!?! She's kinda like pj Harvey and Tori mixed together
Well, that was all bloody moving. :'-I
AMNDA FCKNG PLMR. SH'S ACE.
Hell yeah
No one is gonna bring you cake... :(
Very good ;)
Yo I'll say as a teen make I digged the Dresden dolls
How dangerous it would be to fall in love with her.
you don't always have the choice to get off the ride, tho. Not really.
12:25 my eardrums fucking exploded
6:48
Amanda Palmer, Tori Amos is taken
Tori Amos. All I hear is Tori Amos...
Well she loves Tori :D
It is political, when you sing it with a PMS and your neighbor is a polish woman in reproductive age, who might have to make a choice one day and will have to travel elsewhere for it.
How is this a performance when it's all interview?
selw0nk because I do believe she played a number of songs .
It's all performance. Not simply playing an instrument, but creating vibrations.
horrible horrible music , no tempo at all off pitch voice. P.S. Her "Aye" shrieks are just horrible , dont even wanna go to lyrics , thumbsdown from me
???? Is this a judgement?
@@davidherz9968 only a personal opinion , wont be listening to this singer again. Why are you asking?
As a musician, I would disagree with what you said from a technical perspective. Intentional imprecision is a well known approach to making music, especially in this era of quantized beats and autotuned vocals. If it's just a style that doesn't work for you, I get that.
Totally agree! This woman is what's wrong with the current time we live in . Can't stand her arrogance, getting her nose in politics, talking about her sexuality endlessly, and she is very unattractive.
@@canissum as a musician, I disagree with you . Her tone and the piano are on different universes
