I recommend starting with the "First 12". There are a lot of them out there, so you can find the occasional deal. Plus, it gives you the key figures, which is a good starting point. Also, check flea markets and yard sales. While vintage Star Wars figures don't last long at those places, if you get there first thing in the morning, there are usually some great finds.
g'day there, just got a question about the first 12 i understand not all 1977 figures are first 12 what are the differences...what makes a first 12 different from other 1977 figures??
@@travismcmillan1568 the first 12 all have a date stamp on them if 1977. The other figures from the first film are stamped 1978. The first 12 includes the main characters, Luke, Vader, Leia, Han, etc. They are always highly sought after.
@@travismcmillan1568 not only what the other guy said you also get the main characters to build a collection around. It’s easier to buy figures and know which ones to get around a main character than it’d be if you got a figure for like Lobot
Watching this makes me sad as I have finished my vintage SW figures collection ☹️ however when I think of how much it would cost to complete the collection today I feel happy again 😁 I’m on to collecting other vintage SW stuff now like games books & puzzles so it never really finishes 👍🏻
If you want to start collecting carded figures, some relatively inexpensive, but fun ones to start with in my experience are Rancor Keeper, General Madine, Ree Yees, Chief Chirpa, B-Wing pilot, and AT-ST Driver.
Yes, and some main characters look better on Return Of The Jedi cards rather than the Star Wars cards IMHO. And they're much cheaper. Like Farmboy Luke, or Vader (check out the Mexican carded version for a cheaper one and they usually have better bubbles).
Great video!! I especially like the part about building a budget and studying the line I’ve been collecting for 38 years and I still can’t remember all the variations and what not. One tip I have is don’t be afraid to buy lots (groups) of figures on eBay you may only be looking for one figure out of 10 but if it’s in your budget you could get a good saving overall and be ahead of the game the next time a good trade comes up. Also to this day I still find decent figures in thrift and antique shops as well as flea markets(also the occasional garage sale).
I’m 19 years old, and I didn’t grew up with these vintage toys, rather with the super articulated and highly detailed Clone Wars stuff. Still, I really like the look of the simple vintage aesthetic of these old toys.
Except the first half dozen cards or so, I have kept every vintage cardback I bought. I started keeping them because they showed the entire line on the backs---great source of info! And since the pics of the vehicles and playsets varied, I decided it was best to keep every cardback. I wish I still had my very first cardbacks.... that initial purchase of 12-back Luke, Artoo, and Threepio. Oh well.
This information is the best and most mature approach. These are some really great tips. I wish I knew this when I started collecting over 20 years ago.
Great advice. I collected modern sw until I got back it gi joe 8 years ago. One thing I did was I'd buy a "grail" a year. One year I'd buy a steelbrigade the next a terror drome and the next the USS Flagg. I'd buy regular figures and vehicles throughout the year but always tried to buy one top end item a year.
Great video my friend, you make lot's of great point's. There is so much in this hobby that it would take a long time to go through it all. If you have any question's feel free to ask. As you will find choosing a focus is a good thing, as there are many branches on this tree. You have the basic loose and carded, then there are baggie, foreign, bootleg and the list goes on. My main focus is baggie and Lil Lady (Mexican) that's just my figure's. One thing that will come up is repo item's, myself I have no issue with them as I make custom figure's as well. If you do get them as place holders the big thing is drill a hole in the handle then there is no question it's fake. When buying read the full description as seller's will put a repo weapon at time's with the figure. If you see sale's for weapon lot's don't panic and think they have to be fake, there is a reason you see lot's of weapon's, it has to deal with the whole Kenner Care's thing. In short if you lost a weapon you would send a letter to Kenner and instead of getting only the item needed you would get a small box of like 25 of them, I did that as a kid. There isn't much I can think off that wasn't mentioned in the video, the biggest thing is if you have a question ask. like we learned in the Army the only stupid question is the one not asked. I have been collecting for year's, I even have my modified C-3P0 plus a few other's from my childhood. Collecting and hunting for the one's you want is a blast but like a great Jedi once said "once you start down the collecting path, forever will it dominate your destiny. Consume you, it will" sorry couldn't resist a modified Yoda quote.
I like the Kellerman book the most, but I still have yet to find a truly great book for collecting vintage Star Wars figures that lists all the variations, international variations (like the removable hood Jawa), COO variations, which weapons variations go with which COO variations, etc. I don't need to read about what the character did in the film. Sorry, Mark Bellomo. I need to know collecting details. For example, maybe put in a part about how to identify fake weapons, capes, and stickers.
Really good video advise for starting collecting ! It should be helpful for anyone who start into it. And for sure don't forget to have fun, it is the key to enjoy collecting Star Wars toys. Always remember the Gooney bird: It's Kenner, it's fun !
My advice is to go for it slowly. I made the mistake of going too fast at the beginning. I bought like 10 at a time. If you instead collect at a leisurely pace, you get more times you can long for a new figure. May the force be with you - always!
Hey junk Man. First I wanna tell you how much I enjoy your videos. They have come in handy for knowledge and a good laugh many times. I have been collecting Star Wars for many years. My collection is kind of all over the place. After watching your video here. I decided to make the different original 13 mail away sets my first focus as sort of a collection with in a collection. However my lack of knowledge of the different line release dates is making it difficult to figure out which line I would use to complete the 2005 version of the mail away set to mimic the original 13 figures. Any help with this would be great. Thank you.
I have a chance to buy a Luck Skywalker in the box with one noticeable feature of his hair being darker than normal. The other is a lose Luke Skywalker with the funky light saber and slight behind the arm he’s hold his lightsaber with. Which should I go for??
Very helpful advice, I have my OG stuff from when I was a kid. Recently started trying to fill in the ones I never had. I was surprised to see the $ amounts for some of these figures. Boba Fett will apparently have to wait for a while to save that budget amount...
Im collecting vintage obscure items. Today i got a 1977 chewbacca necklace . Also a xwing pendant. Official release from 20th century Fox. Its all shiny! Like never worn: )
My one piece of advice would be to collect because you love Star Wars, NOT as an investment. If Hasbro keeps going with their Retro collection, then we will start to see some significant drops in vintage toy values. So, this might be the worst time to try gettig into buying vintage MOCs. Unless you are just buying for nostalgia purposes or because you love the character (in which case money is generally no object).
I always give that advice to every collector of anything. Selling a collection costs you a heartbreak and it will bring in *much less* than you "invested".
From France ! Bonjour Junkman ! Really, i like your Wise and smart advices, especially targeted ( if so ) to young collectors….you are the buddy we all would like to have ! I am 53 and still collecting...time is running...Star Wars toys are ( unfortunetely ) uninteresting for this today's generation...collecting Star Wars's vintage figures or Playsets or Vessels...an old guy pleasure ?
I'm just starting out as well. I'm looking for high grade carded stuff, mint loose complete and no repros. Also, my budget is $10, can anyone help me out? Kidding aside, great tip video Junkman. I love vintage SW but I don't think I'll ever fully collect it. Way too much cool stuff and I already dont have space for the stuff I do have.
loved the video. will be helpful to many collectors. wish i had used your advice. i was a ruthless careless collector. i knew what i wanted..did not waiver, spent whatever i had to no matter the price even if i couldnt afford it. heard and suffered the wifes wrath many times and had to barter to score a place in the house to display my "mistress collectibles " lol. years of frustration, lost money from items not as promised ,lost auctions, and paying far to much for something only to decide i did not need it in my collection anyway or deciding i should never have gotten rid of it and paid triple to get it back!!!!!!!! ah the joy of collecting. its really an insanity . a true relationship filled with alot of time...money spent for the cause and wasted emotion. was it worth it? depends on the person. i can tell you that when i go to my over 10,000 dollar man cave (and that end money spent result is very wrong probably double over the years) it brings me joy and peace throughout the years to enter a room of my childhood everyday. not to mention its the centerpiece of every conversation when anyone visits the house. truly impressive and i hope you all enjoy what you create. but like the junkman says...dont forget the fun. for me i will never know which was more gratifying ,the thrill of the hunt...or the capture .the struggle is real lol. enjoy!!!! may the force be with you.
also...if you are going to spend a small fortune on figures....you need to "DISPLAY" them! if you are going to waste money to keep items in cardboard boxes you become a hoarder. so ....when you display your stuff you "limit" your collection to the space you have and it forces you to collect only what you really want . also...spend the cash to display and protect properly..you will not regret it.get a custom case built. there are plenty of people on the web. or to display vehicles and ships try detolf glass cabinets from ikea..very inexpensive way and looks great!
I’m lucky that we’re I live, there is a collectible store nearby. The people there don’t really seem to know the value of there Star Wars stuff, I just picked up Dengar, Palpatine, and the Dew-Back for $30 total.
I'm a bargin hunter, I found a woman selling 28 figures for $7 some beaters but had a vintage IG-88 and a Lando! Thrift shops and Goodwill finds are great too.
I really would love to look into getting at least the first 12 and some vehicles! It'd be awesome to get an early bird package butttt I dunno how much I wanna spend yet lol
Great advice Junkman, but I do have one question. What is a good book that tells you about the different variants of figures, and the different types. For example when I see sellers on ebay, they will tell you that the figure is from Hong Kong.
Great video. Thank you for doing this one. Even though I've been collecting since 1997, I still consider myself a beginner. I have that Kenner collectng guide (77-98) that you recommended and an old one signed by Steve Sansweet himself thanks to my dealer. I honestly have thought of joining fb JUST for collecting, but I'm very leery of fb, that goes against everything I stand for. I don't want it to steel my soul. :) I hate computers and I hate people. :) haha For now I'm limited to my personal dealer's stuff and ebay. I'll think about it, though ..
I'm more of an anything goes collector, but I don't have any vintage stuff on card. I'd rather have them loose I think, but I'm down to the last 17 I think, minus a couple of them like Gen Lando, the Ewoks, and Anakin. So the money figures really, and a lot of weapons/accessories are missing of course. Good video man!
Unfortunately, with everyone getting figures graded, there are fewer and fewer loose weapons available. Soon the weapons will cost more than the figures. In some cases, they already do.
I really wish this was out when first started collecting. The one about don't try and get everything really helps in my experience 😂. Anyways great video Junkman 👍
My tip would be always buy the best condition you can afford. If you can afford a mint condition figure over one half the price that is beat up do it. A quality collection you can be proud of is so much better.
Most of my original trilogy figures i grew up with I've spent from £1-£23 pounds on figure pids even a pair of nice figures for about £23 I also have option A-C for bids and one to buy if they get hot or out bidded and don't know till it's finished got some carded figures won on bids £6-£25 the most i spent on the last 17 figure £70 with out a staff amnaman played the waiting game for him to drop low enough bought 5 figures for £18 were £20 no weapons in a bundle buy.
Leave the last 17 until last unless you happen to find them cheap in a charity shop, flea market or similar discount shop. Try and buy complete as you can pay silly money for a weapon but pay only slightly more for same weapon and figure. Try and buy from Facebook groups as eBay prices are getting silly of late and always pay goods and services in PayPal to protect yourself.
Conventions, can be a gold mine for vintage toys! Don't buy the from the dealers as they will charge the moon for these (there are exceptions). One of the tricks I use is look in junk boxes you can find loose figures in there then look for parts (guns and such) and boom you can get complete figures and it hasn't cost the earth.
I'm hoping I'll just get some nice folks respond to this? My gut says its probably not true but here goes..I've recently starting collecting and have ordered from various places. I'm noticing many but not all of the bubbles are coming unsealed at the bottom. Is this normal? I had someone I bought from say they are never sealed and don't quite believe it. They even went as far to say some others put out from I believe late 70s and 80s were the same? Truth or not? Thanks so much!
if not taking care if the bubble will pop off over time. unlikely they were never sealed but should have glue marks, if so then it was sealed at one time
Have the regular 84 now! 2 years later! FYI collect how and what u want You don't have to listen to the nerdo gatekeepers they are not Kenner Afficianatos!! Jusr sayin!
Paul Harrison from JediTempleArchives.com and Steve Sansweet from Ranchero Obi Wan (and a few others) actually updated that book recently Both are great books Oh and Tommarts price guide is a really nice book for vintage Kenner figures too R.I.P Tom Tumbusch.
Funny story how i started collecting vintage toys i was in a thrift store and just passed by the toys area and saw a jawa figure from 1977 and i got him for a dollar.
My advice would be collect for yourself, not for the community. That's where the book comes in handy. Look through it and see what strikes you. Don't try to collect what other people have, condition, complete runs, prototypes, just because they're getting positive feedback. Once you turn off your computer its just you and your collection and your money spent.
When I started collecting my plan was to get the original 12 loose complete I still don’t have the original 12 and I got A lot of Star Wars stuff it seems like your focus changes over time shiny things distract you all the time 😂😂😂😂
The funny thing is. The old school figures look like shit compared to the new ones now. Lol. I just like the box art. I have two ROTJ figures in card. They look like great condition. Darth Vader and the Tie fighter pilot 1983. I sold all my loose figures in 2008. I regret it but most were beat up and we’re mostly good for parts. I actually kept a lot of the new released ones they look way better.
My tip: don't buy loose figure without *ALL* the accessories. You'll be sorry later. Those loose accessories are hard to find and sellers ask serious dough for it. Oh, and another tip: stop collecting if you live in Europe, just enjoy what you already have. It's just too darn expensive because "surface rate" shipping from the US don't exist anymore. And forget 'bout collectors fairs: they used to be great, not so anymore. Unless you're a role player, that is. Then you can dress up as Slave Leia. Hmmmmm, maybe that Facebook tip from Junkman will help...

Great advice Junkman, but I do have one question. What is a good book that tells you about the different variants of figures, and the different types. For example when I see sellers on ebay, they will tell you that the figure is from Hong Kong.
Best is to your The Imperial Gunner website over a book. For that
I like to collect ungraded and then submit to AFA or CAS. It's a big pain in the ass but I'm hoping it eventually pays off
Great video! Does that book you mentioned show the variant versions of the figures?

Most of the last 17 figures are brutal to one's budget. I saved those for last when I was re-collecting again.

What do you store your figures in? I see the clear box but can't find any. Great video!
It was made for screws and nuts and stuff. Home Depot types stores should have it
need that book!
Great video
You should make this a regular series on your channel
If it doesn’t well I’ll do a part 2
Yeah if it does you could do different ones like for younger kids like 13 like myself
good video, very helpful
Do you have a list of what the common figures are?
Nope but it’s mostly non main cast
I think I want to collect those books.
Great tips👍👍
I'm hoping I'll just get some nice folks respond to this? My gut says its probably not true but here goes..I've recently starting collecting and have ordered from various places. I'm noticing many but not all of the bubbles are coming unsealed at the bottom. Is this normal? I had someone I bought from say they are never sealed and don't quite believe it. They even went as far to say some others put out from I believe late 70s and 80s were the same? Truth or not? Thanks so much!
if not taking care if the bubble will pop off over time. unlikely they were never sealed but should have glue marks, if so then it was sealed at one time
I Started with the 40 I had as a KID!! 10 down 30 to GO!!!
Have the regular 84 now! 2 years later! FYI collect how and what u want You don't have to listen to the nerdo gatekeepers they are not Kenner Afficianatos!! Jusr sayin!
Thanks this is so helpful!!!
Paul Harrison from JediTempleArchives.com and Steve Sansweet from Ranchero Obi Wan (and a few others) actually updated that book recently
Both are great books
Oh and Tommarts price guide is a really nice book for vintage Kenner figures too
R.I.P Tom Tumbusch.
Funny story how i started collecting vintage toys i was in a thrift store and just passed by the toys area and saw a jawa figure from 1977 and i got him for a dollar.
Hell, where can I get that Darth Vader dollar bill, I collect what I like, probably never sell, nice video Mr. Junkman, thank you very much!
Not sure. Found it on google
@@ThatJunkman ok, thank you Sir!
A tip from me....you can never have enough storm troopers get as many as you can
I havs a lose one got it at wallmart
Most Facebook groups are assholes when you want to ask the estimated value of your vitage figure, actually many of them forbid that
My advice would be collect for yourself, not for the community. That's where the book comes in handy. Look through it and see what strikes you. Don't try to collect what other people have, condition, complete runs, prototypes, just because they're getting positive feedback. Once you turn off your computer its just you and your collection and your money spent.
When I started collecting my plan was to get the original 12 loose complete I still don’t have the original 12 and I got A lot of Star Wars stuff it seems like your focus changes over time shiny things distract you all the time 😂😂😂😂
Ungraded all the way.
Hmmmmm, maybe that Facebook tip from Junkman will help...
what is this "buuck" you speak of?
Redundant, much?
I sold all my toys in 2000....🤦🏻♂️.
Unplaed with
Lol the book guide itself is like $500.
Anyone in this comment section know where I can get.....lol jk
Why does this video sound like scolding you. Chill out man, its a SW action figure video. Its supposed to be FUN
?????
"fasebuuck"? good lord, man. speak some form of English.
I see you never learned about manners as a kid, huh?
@@KardboardKenny If you have to tell people it's a joke, it's not very funny. Keep trying, kid.
@Trooper KLE-828 If that's your idea of comedy, bad or otherwise, you have my sympathy. It just sounded like a an asshole being a dick...twice.
@@RansomeStoddard its such a shame you're so fucking stupid.
@@RansomeStoddard WTF is your problem? you might wanna get help for your emotional issues. if a bad joke triggers you that much, please get off of the internet.
