What about the rod holders on the sides? You mentioned your mainly doing this for a canopy so how did you install the rod holders not having access to side gunnel to install backing to rod holder?

Like that you used a " jig" great idea! When you start you hole drilling, run the bit in reverse to get it started, it won't torque some much!!
Could have also drilled the screw holes and use them to fasten and hold the template.
