How To Thru-Hike the Appalachian Trail Without Hitchhiking | Shuttle & Transportation options I used

- I always wondered how thru-hikers got around on the Appalachian Trail. Like how easy was it to find a ride to and from town to resupply? I learned a lot on my thru-hike in 2021, and now I want to share all the methods I used to get around that didn't involve sticking out your thumb.

I hiked the AT without hitchiking, walked in and out of every town. No rides. Took some careful planning of resupply options that were closer to trail but I enjoyed the extra challenge
What was the farthest you had to walk?
Once again, this is another of your "post trail" videos that I personally found EXTREMELY helpful. As I plan my first attempt next year, one of my biggest concerns is transportation to town for hotels and resupplies. I'm definitely saving this video as a future reference for myself. I really appreciate you sharing your experience/knowledge. It's gold for me LOL. Thank you Taylor.
It must be a great feeling knowing so many people love you and care about you and wanted to help you on your through hike...❤️❤️❤️
I ❤️your videos now that you're off trail. You have more time to develop the content and post production is crisper. And the length is perfect ( not too short and not too long). Very good Taylor. Oh, I also appreciated you posting each and every day while on trail ( I know that was tough).
Planning a thru-hike in 2023 and I am also hesitant to hitchhike. Great info and looking forward to more informative videos for my planning.
Video idea: Ranking all 14 states from favorite to least favorite?
Your connections were great! True 6-degrees of separation. Mother's uncle's sister's best friend's brother-in-law.... So fun!
wow, what a great video. unique content that isnt the same old stuff. very helpful!
Excellent topic. Thanks for taking the time to let us know all of these tips.
Hey Taylor! Great video! This is super helpful as I am trying to organize transportation to and from towns and hostiles for my attempt as I am going to need to do a lot of resupply boxes due to dietary needs. Love the new shirt but where’s the “you’re a false summit” and stache’ merch!!! Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well. #giveashit

I found the "don't count on Uber or Lift" really good information. I would definitely expect those resources useful. I now know to not rely on them. Was the cell service good most of the time?
In Vermont there is public transit available from towns near the trail. In Bennington there is the SEVT MOOver 13 bus route in the morning & Green Mountain Express Emerald Line in the evening. From the city of Rutland there is MVRTD The Bus' Rutland-Killington Commuter bus. All local & commuter buses in Vermont are fare free right now because of the COVID 19 pandemic. The bus routes I mentioned will take you to the nearby trailheads
The yellow deli doesn’t offer shuttles back to trail because its apparently a branch of a larger old school ideal cult. They don’t want people to go back to trail cause that means they leave. That’s also why they have men’s and woman’s sleeping rooms separate. It’s an interesting place that’s for sure
I can corroborate the tip that Uber is not a go-to along the trail. I was section hiking near Pen-Mar earlier this year and ran into a couple who were trying to get into town because one of them had injured a knee. The non-injured person hiked on down to the nearest road, saying he was going to try to call an Uber. No dice, even though we were not that far out from a town. He ended up just getting help from a passing car/good Samaritan who give them a ride.
What was the average cost of a shuttle? I loved following along on your journey, thank you for all you do!!
Some of the best experiences was off trail was hitching. I got offers for kayaking , free showers and laundry even overnight stays at homes and or dinner. Alot of the locals know the area and are like guided tours when they drive you around.
Super helpful as always 😀
Thanks Taylor. Great info.
As much as this is a useful video, I feel like the main point is: Be famous and people will drive you around! That's kinda like hitching. EDIT: This was a joke. I love your videos!
nah brah that’s not it
That is most definitely not the main point. Everything I talked about can be used if you're not "famous"
Sorry, I guess the lack of a smiley face had this come off mean instead of humorous. It was a joke!
This was a great idea, Taylor. Very helpful. Thanks!
I'm scared to put my thumb up too. It just doesn't feel right. I don't look cool doing it. Like watching someone smoke a cigarette who doesn't smoke...awkward!
What does "within walking distance" mean to a thru hiker? 🤔
This
Thank you
Hi Taylor! This was an awesome informational video. Im deathly afraid of hitchhiking and I'm a decent sized guy, so I feel you there. Awesome shirt btw!
~Alex
Great job Taylor! Make sure to check out Nahamsha gifts in Meredith! Just went and got the most 🔥 NH hoodie and some other crazy cool stuff!!
I'm a 53 year old man that has hiked to the mailbox and back.... I have the exact same fear and I was wondering if it could be done without the hitchhiking.
I used Lyft from North Station to my motel and it took at least 5 drivers switch off's until one actually picked me up. John from MI
Good information! Thank you!
Good to know. Do like hitchhiking
.🦋❤
Taylor, I wouldn't take hiking advice from a Vermonter. It's flat there. Ask someone from NH or the Adirondacks. Hi Kyle!
Im a past thru hiker, you're wrong. The Green Mountains of Vermont are far from flat. They may not be as drastic as the White's of NH but still not flat.
@@jakepalmer6084, I was teasing my neighbors. I'm in the ADKS. Vermont's awesome. It's all good.
@@freeheel748 Excuse me, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed sometimes...lol
@@jakepalmer6084, Yeah well neither is Kyle. : ) #campchair trending Nice to meet you.
@@freeheel748 Nice to meet you, have a good evening!
Hikers welcome is 0.3 off the trail in NH
Great information!
Thank you for this!
Thanks!
Watched all your AT videos, they were great, thanks for doing them! Had a question about getting shuttles, what is the price range for them?
I’ve watched too many crime shows to want to hitch hike. Glad to know it can be done without that.
Great info, thanks for sharing your knowledge. What sizes are available for the shirt?
Our town in NC, Franklin has great hiker transport options, but I have no idea about anything north of Virginia. Scary.
Curious for those who do hitchhike if certain areas are easier to rides than other. Talking to a thru hiker that I gave a ride to near the ore hill section of the AT, they mentioned once they hit the northeast rides were tough to get.
Hitching is awesome. She just too good for it or something. Don't pay it any mind. Hitching is free and fun and easy anywhere along the trail.
Smart not hitch-hiking. I agree!
Did you consider B&B's? I ask as my aunt runs one in GA near the trail and offers shuttle service to/from the trail (and probably into town to resupply) I'm assuming other B&B's along the trail may do the same.
Doc, which B&B is it?

Miss ya
What was the typical cost of a hostel and taxi service?
I tried to use uber as a section hiker to shuttle to a start point and hike back to the car but I couldn’t get a driver any of the times I tried.
I hitched back when I was a little kid. My brother and I (ages 12 and 8 or so) would stand 10 feet away from the bus stop and hitch. If we caught a ride (to the beach/boardwalk) it meant we could save the 15 cent bus fare and have more spending money. We'd be standing there in cut off jeans, bare feet with towels around our necks hitching! If no ride, we'd take the bus. Circa 1973.
❤
On the trail did you have any encounters with dangerous wildlife?
Nope. Just a couple moose in Maine, but they weren't being dangerous
Why are they called hostiles I mean the word hostile doesn't sound very inviting
had some difficulties with taxis in the late 1990s. dropping me off at the wrong trailheads. taxis can be ignorant about the trail
I hitch hiked... Led to a 96 hour nightmare
Didn't you over plan your through hike" Didn't you overuse your cell phone and the internet? Would you consider just going on a hike and winging it?
huh? I dont think i "overplanned" or "overused internet" im happy with how it went.
@@TaylortheNahamshaHiker Oh, okay!
Good morning
@CGull, It's about time! My day is looking up.
Good morning
@CGull, Only if I can use your numbers! Lol!
I love hostels. I've met the coolest people and they're cheap.
You mention your "parents" a number of times, but I don't recall ever seeing your dad. Am I missing soething or is he camera shy?
Your videos are great and inspired me to start hiking and looking for adventures.
My mom came 8 times and I think my dad visited twice. No reason he wasn't on camera, I don't really like to film others if they aren't used to it
A complete hiking video on how not to walk.
When you are walking over 2180 miles, adding step doesn't make sense.
First step have lots of money
Only between 4 or 5 grand minimum. I did it for even less.
Great information. Thanks
