  • I spent SO long deciding what gear to take on my 2021 Appalachian Trail thru-hike, and I'm pretty proud with how well everything performed! While I did make a bunch of gear swaps during my hike, there are quite a few pieces of gear that made the whole journey from Georgia to Maine. In this video, I'll share those gear MVP's.

Hi Taylor. I thoroughly enjoyed watching your and Cody's journey last year and your content. I've been planning my first A.T. Thru for the last year and a half and your videos were always inspiring / encouraging so thank you for the work you did in making them. The post trail gear videos are like gold to us that are prepping, as you know. I just started a YT channel to vlog my Thru and my gear videos always seem to get the most views. If you're ever dealing with insomnia or bored, please give me a watch and if you have any critiques or advice on my gear choices or thought processes that you'd like to share, I'd be forever grateful. I'm leaving March 20th NOBO. Thanks again and congratulations again on your successful Thru!!!

A lot of solid choices here, Taylor. The Visp and the EE puffy on my bucket list. I have the Hilltop food bag and I really like it. The Hyper Mountain Light Pack is a great pack, but wish it had load lifters. And I also have the EE bag, only different model and its the 20 degree bag, for me. And I also have Toaks spoon, long handled spoon. And camp shoes are definitely good to idea to relieve pressure from your feet. And then putting on warm, comfy socks are definitely the best.
I have done a lot of the shorter trails, on the East Coast and aspire to hike the AT, when I can save enough money.

Hey Taylor! Great video as always. Pretty amazing you kept your spoon the whole trek. I lost 2 spoons last year! One of them before I even got to use it! I now keep a gas station plastic spoon in my emergency kit as back up 😂 For AT hikers I am currently watching Scott Benerofe, he is sobo and started last month! I’ve never watched a sobo AT trek nor a full blown winter trek, and Scott is an epic dude so it really caught my attention. For CDT hikers I am following Darwin. Again, never watched a sobo CDT hike so it’s cool to watch especially from Darwin’s lens. His production style is one of my favs. For the PCT I will be following Jupiter, Kelly Hays and Kyle and Flossy. Jupiter is another hiker who’s style just speaks to my soul. His last series on his sobo IAT trek was stellar! I am hoping to find a few more long distance and short distance hikers to watch as I enjoy watching (or listening) to videos as I hike myself. I have plans for a bunch of trips this season so I’m going to need a bunch of content to watch! A lot of my miles will be up in NH so maybe I’ll finally be able to stop by the store! Are there any items that you had the whole trek that you wouldn’t bring on one again or that like your food bag need to replace before you are comfortable trusting it for a long hike?🙏Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well.

have your hiking buddy carry an extra tent stake for you. That way, when you lose one, you can script your hiking buddy giving you one. @@AlongATrail Good idea to tag your equipment. Dixie Mills lost her poles on Mt K in 2015 I think. She set them down and then they were gone. It was her first thru hike. I think the Wendigos got em. I'll be glad to send an extra umbrella or two if you need one. . . .for critical equipment, remember the SEAL adage, one is none, two is one, and three is where you want to be. I would keep extras so they can be overnighted to you via FedEx or USPS envelope. Test out your gear by using it. My Frog Toggs lasted about a week before they fell apart. You might find you want a mix or different tent stakes, depending upon the terrain (rock vs sand). If you have extra cordage, you can use rocks, trees, other hikers, and the occasional bare in lieu of a tent stake.

A thru-hike is the entire length of a long trail. For the Appalachian Trail, the terminus points are in Georgia and Maine, so an AT thru-hike is over 2000 miles and takes several months. There are shorter trails like The Long Trail which is the entire length of Vermont and takes about a month.

I have that same Swiss Army Knife. I also like the fact that it has the integrated nail clipper so you don't have to carry separate clippers. The only thing I don't like about it is that I have wide big toes and big feet and I wish the blades weren't curved but were straight. An orthopedist told me that cutting your toenails straight across is the best way to prevent ingrown toenails, which you definitely don't want to get on the trail; it's very painful!

Great info video Taylor, thank you! I am a "weekender" backpacker but am preparing for a 10-day this summer. Most any piece of gear that works for 2k miles has gotta be good for 100 miles...you know, within cost reasons. A "vlogger" question I've had for a long time and this video is a perfect example showing it....how do you locate the small snippets of video of a particular subject? Is there a way other than just a really good memory? :) Cheers!

  • @GaerHampton
    @GaerHampton 2 роки тому

I've been really impressed with my Injinji toe liner socks. When I first saw them on a few folks' videos, I thought that there was no way I'd be able to tolerate wearing something like that. I was sure that the individual toes would drive me nuts. But after continuing to hear how great they were, I bought a pair, used them, and loved them! Right after I pull them on, that's the last time I'm aware that there is something between my toes. They are very comfortable to wear. I even bought a second pair before I headed off to Colorado for my backpacking and peak bagging trip last fall. I also love my Dirty Girl trail runner gaiters. It drives me nuts how many little bits and pieces wind up in my shoes when I'm not wearing my gaiters. [That said, Dirty Girl gaiters aren't designed for off trail use (or really brushy trail use) they will get holes poked/ripped in them if you get too rough with them.]
I have both of those tripods.... The little one I've had since 2004, and the big one I bought two years ago I carry the big one now just because I think that its more useful/easier to use. But yes, the little one is lighter, takes up less space, and does work pretty well for a smart phone. I originally used it with an old school Nikon film SLR......which really was a bit too heavy for the little guy. I'd defiantly recommend the larger tripod for DSLR use.

Thanks for the video Taylor! This is super helpful as I do my final review of my gear for this year! Of course I have to plug my channel for hikers to watch this year 😉. But a few others I’m looking forward to watching are Trailhead Justin, Scott Benerofe of course, Trekking Along, and a handful of others!! I’ve followed a lot this year and prob won’t be able to watch most of them until the fall when I’m off trail.

    Hey Taylor!
I may have missed it, but I want to know how you handled the “other frustrations” or “personal issues” on the trail. We are trying to explain that everything is manageable to our teenager even tho it seems difficult. Did you use cups, discs, or ?? Do you have any advice?

'The nuts and bolts of today build tomorrow'. The corollary is, most people are nuts so you have to be the glue or bolts that holds things together.
'Do what you can, with what you've got, where you are.' Although this quote is widely attributed to Theodore Roosevelt, he credits it, in his Autobiography, Chapter IX, to Squire Bill Widener of Widener's Valley, Virginia. TR has a lot of really great quotes.

Good point on your 10 deg quilt. I have a Katabatic 15 deg and they put so much down in it, I have trouble squashing it into my pack. I opted to use a 14L compression sack and stick that with my clothes, booties, pillow, etc. and it squashes down to a little bigger than a softball. It does add 5.3 oz. I use a Zpacks wallet but the longer version. They sell a shorter version that is maybe 4" long. I got the one that is 7 3/4" x 4" and it's made out of Cuban fiber with a waterproof zipper. I really like it and it can hold cash without folder it, ID, Cr Cards, Smokey Permit, etc. I'm looking into the Coros Apex Pro vs. Garmin vs. Apple watch. I have a Fitbit Blaze now and it holds a charge for about 5 days. I might just stick with that until it stops working. Good idea on the lip gloss containers. I used Nalgene containers from REI but they weigh much more. I may switch them out. John from MI

first, I am a bushcrafter and not a thru hiker. I am more likely to be breaking a trail than hiking a groomed trail, so I have a slightly different opinion than, say, Taylor, Dixie, or Daisy. That said, the current thinking is to trade out the nalgene for lighter smart water bottles. 2) I always keep my field equipment separate from my EDC gear, knowing I will break/shred/destroy my field equipment one day. Don't take anything you are emotionally attached to. 3) I like the lip gloss containers; I use tiny scientific borosilicate specimen vials for salt, pepper, paprika, and sugar/sweetner. Same thing as packets but the vials are absolutely water proof (and heavy too). I am going to try concentrated hot sauce, etc., with those. 4) Taylor has a good point about a back up power supply.

@@rembrandtshadows Ahhh, the Nalgene containers I'm using are 1 oz and 2 oz sizes but I think I'll switch out to the lip gloss containers. to save weight I need to test those before using on a long hike though. I assume she did and they worked fine so that's what I'm hoping. For water, I do use Smart Water Bottles (they also work well with my backpacker bidet). Nalgene water bottles weigh too much. I have watched Taylor, Dixie and Daisy and all are good sources of info! I was carrying a 26,000 mAh brick but I'm switching to two Nitecore 10,000 mAh bricks that weigh much less. Also, Anker makes a Fast Charger (45 Watt USB-C + 3 USB ports) and weighs a little less than my old wall charger that plugs into a wall outlet and uses a standard plug. I bought a 1 foot cord with a plug for it. The standard wall chargers with ports on them tend to take up too much space and can be hard to plug in at hostels but the standard plug usually fits in the outlet with the other chargers there. Hi Taylor, I really appreciate all your videos. I am about to leave for the trail in a few weeks. Something I cannot find any information on- when it comes to replacing shoes, did you mail yourself new ones? order online and get them sent places, or did you find that outfitters had enough?

I ordered my shoes on Amazon. Usually just sent them to my parents house because they visited me on trail every few weeks. But cody ordered his shoes online to different towns post offices so that's an option too

Thank you for your help! I really appreciate it. I've been watching a few of your videos a day as I approach my departure March 2nd. I showed my mom a part of one of your videos and she said we look like we could be cousins. Long brown hair, freckles, dimples haha. So I guess you have some long lost "cousins" here in California. Thanks for sharing. I am still deliberating whether I am going to do videos along the way.

I'm currently training for a thru-hike and long day-hikes, I run a channel called "Kentucky Uncharted" and I have a lot of hiking videos including state parks. Almost 2 weeks ago on a Monday I hiked 4.6 miles within 1 hour and 50 minutes and I keep a field journal with my notes, maps, elevation, art, and coordinates. I plan on hiking through eastern Kentucky this spring and summer and I use Gaia Maps on my iPhone which I now have the premium version with offline maps.
