When I was 16 I went on a date with a Lady who was a 10/10. We had nothing in common. so the lesson I learnt was that its better to date a woman who has a compatible personality regardless of their look. Looks aren't everything.
I would tell this guy that just like you would want (attractive) women to see you/notice you/love you beyond your ("ugly") looks, (attractive) women -or any woman for that matter - would want you to notice them/see them/love them beyond their (good or average) looks. See people with your heart and not with your eyes.
