Hi, we had a chance to sit down with the creator of the SteamWorld series, Brjann Sigurgeirsson to chat about what the Nintendo 3DS closure means to him since the first SteamWorld game, SteamWorld Tower Defense is only available on DSiWare. He's very honest with how he's feeling about it all, and fingers crossed we'll see this game again someday. As always, thanks for watching and we'll see you later!

To think this shows just how many dev teams themselves will even lose access to content they've made, its such a surreal scenario for what is an art form.
I feel like it’s on them for not having their own backup or something
@@halami2149 I'm sure they have backups of the code and could rebuild it, but without dev kits (it sounds like they had to return them) how do they get it onto a 3ds to actually play it?
@@1337pianoman Most of the time, that's exactly the problem. Almost none of the studios/developers are forward thinking enough to save the whole dev environment, which includes not only source code, but also assets, tools (self-made or 3rd party) and server code (in case of a multiplayer game) in order to be able to recreate a complete version of the game. Let alone the fact that, as you said, they had to return the devkits so even if they preserved 100% of the project in all of its forms, it would still be almost impossible to have it working, at least in the intended hardware that in this case is 3DS.
@@1337pianoman i mean they could rework it with melonds probably. i mean with the source code you can port it to any platform. they could just run it in a dsi emulator that allows for commercial use honestly although almost no one has done that for ports to modern systems cuz of the issues with duel screens. but you actually cant legally do that for dsi roms cuz theres no reverse engineered dsi bios for aspects of the hardware.
@@gamagama69 Probably more has to do with copyright and license holding.
This is why game preservation is so important
It’s why I’m so glad something like H-shop exists. A downloadable database of everything this console had to offer.
@@DJGlaceon991 yes, everyone who has a 3DS, please hack it. After the eShop closes, there's no other way to get these games. Nintendo will not lose money. It's okay to do so.
And that’s one of the issues I have with cloud gaming cuz once those servers shut down that’s it

This is why people have to mod their system because companies like Nintendo doesn't offer a way to access the eshop library.
I'll forever be grateful that this month, I learned how to mod both my 3DS/Wii U. (Saved myself so much money. Many games from Wii U are on Switch. And I have a few of them, but glad I got to play those that I would never consider buying, and playing it some Wii U, only to find out you know what? I'm considering buying the switch version in the future. (Captain Toad, Lego City (the wii U version loads super slow...Want to find out if the switch version loads better, A.C. III looks werid...maybe the Switch version looks better. See...even if I got these games for free, it didn't stop me from wanting to purchase the Switch version of these games.) Also I already had R.E. Revelations on 3DS and Switch. And wanted to try the Wii U....only to find out that the Wii U version doesn't have the awesome gyro controls like in 3DS/Switch...so...Revelations on Wii U kinda sucks if you were expecting gyro/motion controls.
(I will also note that I'm sure I could mod my Switch, but I won't due to my belief of "Wait until a 3DS/Wii U senerio." But the time that even happens, I would have already purchased legitimately the top games that I wanted anyway, I would just find ways to get the kinds of games that I gave a second thought for free...so...yeah.
@@makotonarukami7468 you can only mod if it’s a first Gen switch. And do it now…there are other reasons to do it besides free games. Themes, running retro games, save back up. It’s actually not a console mod but a SD card inject. The system firmware isn’t changed like 3ds or Wii u
Are save states good to use tho? Any issues losing data?
they also modded them cause they didn't wanna pay anything, lets be honest
more like Nintendo doesn’t want to get paid if you ask me 🤷🏻
Oh man the background music is giving me the feels😢
Steamworld Dig is among my favorite 3DS games ever.
I appreciate that you took the time to talk to game creators about this. There’s a lot of talking heads on this platform, but you guys always provide an interesting angle.
Rest in Peace. We're all in mourning. Please keep street pass alive. Let 3ds never die.
Street pass is local so it can’t die unless every 3ds ever made suddenly stopped working
I guess I should translate myself by saying everyone street pass all the time, at the very least conventions. Each person individually do their part so collectively the overall streetpass experience can stay active.
@@thepaper888 ah, I understand. I feel like conventions right now are the only place to get street passes really.
Sadly, even there maybe very little.
I take my 3DS everywhere.
I just bought SWD2 on the final sale, and thought about what to do with the remaining funds. Then I noticed that SWD would take me down to exactly 0.02 left so I got that too.
I've bought dozens and dozens of titles off the Wii U and 3DS eShop over the years, and yet I'm more glad than ever that I modded my systems. So many DSiWare games, eShop exclusives, other titles that are just gonna disappear. Along with it is any method of transferring your old Pokemon up to the modern Pokemon games. Something which was just taken for granted, considering there are still ways to transfer Pokemon from the OG Red and Blue up to the 3DS era.
Its annoying that Nintendo will close down both eshop for WiiU/3DS.
good thing you can play online games still
@@CrazeReactsOfficial Mario kart 3D online will stay up and running?
I really hope this is the last time and the Nintendo Switch Online will last indefinitely.
@@questworldmatrix I'd say in about 8 years that will be close to shutting down too.
Have closed down*
The worst part about it is that the 3DS and Wii U aren't even losing online play. They're specifically removing the digital library from those platforms and calling it a day. I'm sure there's a way Nintendo could've merged the three eShops onto one storefront online (you know, like they've already done) and called it good, but no
True
Why would they, though? That would cost them money instead of saving it. Barely anybody has been purchasing Wii U or 3DS games in the last six years anyway, so why continue to deal with the licensing, payment processing etc.
@@Christopher-md7tf Yea sony was about to shut down the ps3 and psp store lol. It makes sense.
@@louisinese The difference is that once the fans expressed their dissent with the idea of closing the PS3 store, Sony kept the store open. Microsoft hasn't even tried shutting down the Xbox Live store on Xbox 360. Nintendo said they were shutting it down, acknowledged fan outcry about game preservation (before taking that part down), then basically told people to subscribe to NSO if they want to play old games that they've sold and resold time and again except you don't own them anymore
@@Christopher-md7tf Nintendo is a multi-billion dollar mega corporation and the Nintendo 3DS was a pretty big success on its own. Yes, there's a lot of fees and stuff in keeping games on the eShop, but it's other companies paying Nintendo to keep the games on the eShop, not the other way around. With the Wii U and 3DS still being online compatible since they use the Nintendo Network along with the Switch (except the Wii U and 3DS have free online), you basically have no reason to shut off their eShops since all that does is prevent people from legitimately buying and trying these games should they ever feel the need to do so
I've been researching via a bunch of articles and video and didn't even know about this game until this video, rushed to the 3DS and secured it! thanks for the heads up.
This is why I'm not a huge fan of the digital only game stuff, because once it's gone it's gone. That's why it's very important the video game preservation to preserve those games and for the future generation being able to play it those games or heck some hidden gems otherwise we just can't show it to them. Sure the modding scene is doing a great job, but I'm very disappointed that there's no official way to play those game after they shut down those services at least on consoles and handhelds. On PC is a lot easier.
if you have the game, you can play it lol
The only trouble is physical 3ds flash cartridges expire too, they're only rated for 20-30 years. It's Micro SD cards versus Flash Chips. The real thing is that you can't trade/resell digital games on the second hand market to allow more people to experience them. Maybe there should be a legally required official way to extract it to a sold empty cartridge so you can trade it with other people
@@superxnatrl1941 and if you don't have it you can still install it by modding your console. Legally gray, but Nintendo kinda forces your hand if you still want to play these games.
Physical doesn't last forever either.
and then the only way to buy them is buying a 2nd hand system that happens to have it preloaded for the price of a brand new BMW and HOPE it isnt a scam.. per game
I'm so glad you both got to talk with a game developer and got to see a little inside on how they feel about the whole shut down of the WiiU/3DS eshop!
I also loved the reaction he got when you brought the idea of porting a collection to the Switch, would love more games being brought to the Switch!💖
I had quite a few 3DS games codes from various Humble Bundles that I never "claimed" and surprisingly I managed to collect about all but 1. The game Rhythm Thief I think it was, which is unfortunate. I got Steam World Dig, though I own it on various other platforms, and now I'll need to give it a go on my 3DS.
I didn't even know about SteamWorld Tower Defense until I watched an episode of Did You Know Gaming? that mentioned it. I downloaded it, and I loved it. Now that it will be impossible for the foreseeable future to find the game for sale, it's a relief to know I have it.
(*By the way, I have heard that even among the development team, Brjann is the only one who has beaten the final stage of SteamWorld Tower Defense. How did he do it?! I've tried, and I've never succeeded! I want to know! AAAGH!)
The music made me double check that my 3DS was closed and still downloading all the things in sleep mode, lol.
Play your Wii U and 3ds! Hi all! If you love the Wii U and 3ds please PLAY them daily or at least weekly because your play data is still given to Nintendo. If we all play our systems regularly Nintendo will at least know how much this wonderful community of ours loves the Wii U and 3ds. This is one great thing we can all do easily to support the systems we love! Spread this message to as many people as you can so our big happy Wii U and 3ds family has fun forever! We all were and are a part of something special. Thank you all! :)
I got all that I could over the last year, mostly rpgs, all the Pokémon everything. Sadly couldn't get all the dlc. I have all the steamworld games, except this dsi one. I would love it though soooo much.
We have to figure out a better way going forward. I'm thinking the biggest issue with these eshops is not really servers, but it cost alot of money to run POS systems and maintenance to make sure somebody doesn't breach and steal a bunch of peoples credit card info. But we need some sort of digital library or some alternative that would make it easy for games to just exist. There will always be somebody at some point who will want to buy a game and its just crazy to have these games just not accessible anymore because of cost vs profit.
It already exists, though. Google [game name] +rom, lol. Also, profit was the entire reason the store existed in the first place, so it's only natural that a lack of profit leads to its closure.
Nintendo needs to look at Steam. Here is an eshop that has been around for TWENTY YEARS. So they need to take what they made with Switch, and keep it. They can improve it, add to it etc… but what I’ve purchase on this shop… it NEEDS to move over to the next platform too. I think most Nintendo fans are over buying the same games over and over, and I’m sure as hell not getting on board with getting drip fed the same mediocre games over the course of more than half a decade.
@@jeremysart YES. This is _EXACTLY_ what Nintendo should look into. It'd be easy money and it'd be great for us because PC doesn't suffer from console generation issues. They could even put a lot of their games on mobile. This would also solve a lot of piracy issues.
I discovered this series recently on the eShop (I know I’m late, but I just recently got a 3DS that can access the eShop). The universe is really interesting. I can see how much love was put to release these amazing games. There’s absolute gems such like Steamworld Heist that I will never forget. I’m so happy to see that so much care was put into matching the essence of the 3DS console by including what makes it unique in the games : the support for 3D display and touch controls (Steamworld : Tower defence). All of it was done for the most important console ever to me : the 3DS. I am so happy to be able to support the series by downloading the entire 3DS eShop lineup with the DLCs and be able to support at the same time the creators. I am proud to say that these games will live forever on my system!
Wish I got Steamworld Tower Defense. Should've shown some final support to the creators of that game because they deserve it. They made some very classic indie games and this could have been a hidden gem in their catalog. But I did get SWD1 and SWH on Wii U, Switch, and 3DS and SWD2 on 3DS and Switch, so at least I can say that! Haha! Incidentally SWD2 is one of the greatest 2D platformers I have ever played.
This was such an interesting discussion between a developer and two ex Nintendo employees. I would never promote piracy of course. On the other hand, game preservation and archiving is a completely valid discussion to have, especially when the big companies really aren’t doing much about it. It’s a shame that there’ll no longer be an official way to support the developer in order to play his game, which is essentially being ripped away from consumer’s hands
Thank you for being someone who doesn’t support piracy. So many just homebrew people out there.
@@kinggoddavid5104 Homebrew does what Nintendon't
@@dataroaming7512 amen 😂😂😂
@kinggoddavid5014 Preservation IS piracy. Software is not preserved unless the rights holders (or anyone else) CANNOT take it down.
Opposing piracy while supporting preservation is an oxymoron.
@@KopperNeoman yea blah blah game preservation, I agree game preservation would be nice but nothing last for ever is what it is
Nintendo should've just left them up for sale forever, paying through the eShop website like Steam games. It's such a shame. It's wild but I'd argue they should've kept it up at least another decade to 5 years. Especially with all the money they are raking in from paid subscription NSO. I feel like they have a responsibility to take care of old consoles for everyone that purchased them, even if they are less popular. Them closing it down now is way, way too soon.
Moving on allows them to move forward, I do agree they should be preserved
@@liljes34 I would argue there's nothing stopping them from moving forward they could just leave the service up hire a few extra people for maintenance and have it run off of software fees and likely still be way more than profitable.
Not to mention other companies like Nvidia support even ancient pieces of hardware more than a decade old with driver updates and software improvements. While not an entirely fair comparison Windows PCs still run basically any game/software no matter how old. Steam still sells basically every single game ever added to it in the last few decades and the games still have online cloud support saves, voice chat better than discord, miiverse style communities, safe mod workshops, custom artwork, and even recieve updates all for 100% free while offering a service a hundred times better than NSO. I just want Nintendo to do better when I know they can
I hope the Steam Deck pushes Nintendo to be better and more pro consumer/accessibility on their next console. And I hope their massive multi-billion dollar investment in online pays off when it starts to show it's results in a few years when they inevitably release a new platform
@@willwunsche6940 it costs money to keep these things running, it’s time to move on. The Wii U failed anyways.
Just leaving old console storefronts up forever just doesn't work financially. It makes sense to close them. However, Nintendo should consider a storefront that doesn't suffer from console generation issues... Steam. At least for their old games. Every console exclusive _should_ end up on Steam.
A Steamworld collection would be great & thank you for putting your games on sale at the end sir
Really sad that the 3ds eshop will now be closed!! I got some of the free stuff as well as a couple of themes of in case they close that too. I also have the 3 3ds Style Boutique Games and I really love the 3rd one the most (maybe because of the new game+ feature) and its so sad that these games and the story of seasons trio of towns (another game I love and it got me into the harvest moon and story of seasons games in the first place) will become super rare now all because they're not on switch so far. Also, I know that Nintendo revealed Fashion Dreamers in the Nintendo direct, but it's not the same as the style boutique games I know and love.😭💗
Thank you!! I just managed to squeeze this game into my 3ds and just barely managing to buy it before the store closed... I had totally forgotten about it.😅
I just bought it as a last minute add to my 3ds library!!! I like tower defense games a lot and did not know about it until now.
Steam World was one of the first games I made sure to get before 3DS eShop closed today.
Great interview! I also liked his interview on NVC. Also I loaded up my Wii U eshop as soon as I clicked this video and was confused for a second why my Wii u was coming out of my speakers 😂 thanks bgm.
Dsi ware games were my favorite indie games.
There was something so simple about them. Like games at their purest form. No live service. No micro transactions. Just game.
Many DSi games at their core were essentially just that, indie games just live by that rule even to this day in a world of online games shutting down and kids blowing their parent’s credit card on lootboxes while they were popularly online
Was able to save money through modding the 3ds and got the two steamworld games on it. They’re both really great. My favorite one was the first one
Today is truly a sad day for art and media preservation.
1:21 good on Krysta for the suggestion!! 👏👏
Is this part of a larger interview I missed? Or was this a short interview from GDC or something?
Dont let those digital games get lost in obscurity. Bring out a switch physical compilation celebrating these great games.
Please!
And also put them on PC because the Switch's storefront will also be shut down eventually and that collection would probably be expensive and inaccessible in the future. PC is so much more future-proof than consoles could ever hope to be.
I have all the Steam World games even the DSiware one and I am happy to have them, they are great.
Considering that I bought Steamworld Dig three times and Heist/Dig 2 two times each they can hopefully forgive me when I one day get Tower Defense over alternative channels.
I bought all 3 Steam World 3DS games twice.
Edit: also bought Steam World Tower Defense once.
When the wii shop and dsi shop went away, most of the stuff were still available to purchase on the Wii U and 3DS eShop, so it wasn't a big deal. But now even the Wii U and 3DS eShop are going away. I get that nintendo is a business and that businesses are all about money, but still decisions like these really just makes me upset at Nintendo. Really makes you think about when they eventually pull the plug on the Switch eShop, a console that has a huge install base and a console where digital games are more common more than ever, will we, the fans, be able to do anything to change their minds?
Don't worry. The DSi libary and 3DS e-shop library are among the most well-preserved digital platforms in history. SteamWorld Tower Defense won't be forgotten.
Coincidentally I just downloaded the 3DS game right before the eShop was down for maintenance.
they were down for maintenance for a bit but they're back up for a few more hours if you still have more to buy!
@@sapnupua5 Oh I wish I could buy more, but paying the bills for the month killed the rest of my spending.

Steam world was surprisingly one of my favorite games of all time
They are fun games got dig 1 and 2 and heist on 3ds also have them on switch too
Creators in these situations need to be taking a serious look at working with the homebrew community
Doesn’t seem like the smartest thing to do considering Nintendo doesn’t exactly like them too much.

They're on Steam.
Now, since I highly doubt they will add DS or 3DS games on Nintendo switch online we’re gonna have do something about Nintendo never want us to do but we have to do it now…. emulating!!! oh no, very scary.
Nintendo honestly just helped the scalpers skyrocket prices on their physical games. Professor Layton vs Phoenix wright and Game and Wario are both disgustingly expensive. Now with the eShop gone, and if anyone was unlcuky enough to not be able to pick them up before the shop closed. Have fun forking over 200+ dollars... or emulate.
Im glad I got it on the DSi ware, I also got dig on 3ds, then heist and dig2 on switch, I have only played dig 1 a of now, though I am really interested in the series!
Dillon was the first game I was physically unable to play because I was left-handed.
Just downloaded Steamworld Dig 2 before the closing. Should be cool looking on 3DS.
This goes to show that making everything backwards/forwards compatible, starting this gen with the Switch Eshop; would not only benefit the players, but also the devs. I would think with Nvida; Nintendo should have this figure out by now. No online subscription on online streaming solution; just permanent forward compatibility on par with what Steam does; should be the baseline.
Steam world tower defense is such a good game. Even though its difficulty is extremely frustrating at times, i was Never able to beat the last few stages
I haven't known that the steamworld has a tower defense like gameplay. Been playing the steamworld game released on nintendo switch and this is a cool info. Also sad in a bit because, valid points were made and a game like this would be lost and would be a myth.
That’s the good thing about the internet allowing such experiences to be easily documented by so many also with the same experience, especially if they weren’t thinking about it prior.

They COULD port these games to Switch but It's such a different console...
great reminder!
i just bought it!
Over the past week or two, I already picked up a couple of digital only eShop games I'd been curious about but never tried out.
Then, last night, I ended up just putting 200 SEK (around $/€20) and went browsing for a while to pick up as many cheap and interesting games as possible within that budget.
With a heavy preference for games with female protagonists, I ended up with Mighty Switch Force 1+2, Liberation Maiden, Gabrielle's Ghostly Groove 3D, and Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove. (I've only partially played Shovel Knight before through Steam library sharing.)
I suppose I COULD have picked up SteamWorld Dig 2 for a third platform, but to be honest the 2nd copy was an accident due to poor memory to begin with. 😅
I honestly didn't care that much about the eShop closing down (it's not like the games aren't still very easy to access and the consoles very easy to hack), but I did make some last-minute purchases yesterday and it was just weird to think that I would never be going on the 3DS and Wii U eShops again after all this time.
Great game det. From my city Gothenburg in Sweden.
Should bring the game to steam. You can still play games from years ago on there.
This is an awesome video!
I saw this 20 hours too late... I would love to have this ❤ 😅 I honestly thought steamworld dig was the first
Every game should get a physical version. Even if they only make 100 copies and sell it for $100 a piece.
Thanks for reminding me to buy this. I would have been annoyed to miss this one.
This is crazy I bought this game (steam World 1) for $1.99 cause i had $2 left over
How long has it been since there was only one active eShop?
Damn thi video hit a soft spot on all of them. Well it is cool they branched off and made something out of this.
I bought steam world dig 2 on my 3DS and steam.
nah, fuck those games that didn’t get discounted in these last weeks
thanks god i bought this game last year
Oh my god let the guy talk! 😂
I love playing it on my 3ds ♥
Let’s all ride the high seas to save the day.
All those games are all still available. The devs don’t get a cut, but if you want to support them just buy one of their games on other platforms.
Not SteamWorld Tower Defense
I wouldn't have an issue with the E-Shop closing if the games were adapted to the Nintendo Switch like Nintendo did with pass consoles, but not, all lost. I brought the game I most wanted while I had the time.
Nintendo doesn't do this because they have to reformat games single generation. Imagine how much work it'd be to reformat every single old game every generation.
I wish they'd just put them on Steam because PC doesn't suffer from this issue. It takes a _VERY_ long time before a game doesn't work on modern PC hardware, and even then, there are probably workarounds. This would also mean that you don't have to repurchase your games every single time you buy new hardware.
This has to be the dumbest thing Nintendo has ever done.
They should release it in the future if they feel like they want to
It really is a loss to lose access to things like this, but I wasn't entirely clear on his reasoning for not bringing it to switch or pc or something. Steamworld td isn't exactly the most complex game from a dev perspective, so porting it to a more evergreen platform for the sake of preservation seems like the best choice with minimal work, no?
Most of the Steamworld games are on other platforms. Yes, it is sad, but you have plenty of access to them
I modded my 3ds and Wii U so now I can get any game I want
His game has been on the eshop for 13 years! Don’t you think by now anyone remotely interested in this game could have gotten it already?
Anyone who might be interested now after watching this video literally can't buy it anymore, unless they happen to track down an old console that already has it installed. "Doesn't everyone who's interested already have it" is a _horrible_ argument/justification for games effectively becoming lost media.
@@TheAbsol7448 Thats not Nintendo problem, it is the developers! They created a piece of software and they essentially forgot about it. They could have released that game on mobile or other consoles as it is or as a remaster or a compilation or whatever they wanted, they chose to do nothing. That why they are in this predicament in the first place!
I'd say put the game on Steam, since that store has been open for decades.
very unfortunate that no one can buy one of the first games they made
They should port it.
Seeing a Nintendo Switch ad before and after this video just made me more mad at Nintendo

Do a physical run with LRG please !
LRG is trash
Imagine the public discourse when Nintendo announces the Switch eShop closure
The DSi game shown here is the only Steamworld title that is not available on Switch, and it isnt even that popular.
I dont think its a matter of having time to port it to another platform, its a matter of will it be worth the investment for the projected sales. The guy just doesnt want to spell it out, but he pretty much said it. They have other priorities.
Nintendo has been pushing hard on NSO and expansion as the current legit way to play older Nintendo platforms (and Genesis) games. One day some of the DSiWare titles will be available on similar services, although which 3rd party ones will make the list is anyones guess.
Who knows maybe they will even bring back WiiWare at some point.
Im disapointed with this decision. The beauty of buying a second hand retro console in a flea market and have games for it would have been great.
That isn't a good option for most people. At some point, owning a bunch of consoles starts to become very convenient and a lot of those old games are _ABSURDLY_ expensive. It's a good option to have, but it shouldn't be the only option. These games should also be on PC, which doesn't suffer from console generation issues.
I think the Eshop was way better for gamers than NSO ever was. NSO does not let you outright own any game. Paying off the service is never ending, We can never finish off paying SNES games? That is CRAZY. The cost of Virtual Console games were $10… for ONE PURCHASE. People would rather rent a game than own Earthbound forevor. I want to be able to play Link to the Past forevor! Why would you want to pay for a service that once you stop paying for you loose Earthbound, Link to the Past.
Can you guys do a Nuzlocke tho
If the creator thinks is upsetting could they just port on switch?
Man, I'm really glad these two broke away from Nintendo while they could
