Decommissioning Port Talbot’s Coke Ovens

- The last ever coke to be made in the UK was ‘pushed’ from Tata Steel’s Morfa Coke Ovens in Port Talbot on 20 March 2024.
Decommissioning work on the coke ovens battery and associated by-products plant started immediately and has been moving at some pace over the past two months, with work continuing through the rest of the year. And while 80% of the decommissioning work on the battery has been completed, there is still much to do on the by-products plant.
Production Managers Cori Davies and Matthew Frey explain the work involved. - Наука та технологія
Such a shame that we are deindustrialising to a point we are heavily reliant even for stuff of national strategic importance, however pleased to see a replacement is in plan, I wonder if it will compare?
Uk going backwards but quick to demolish everything related to heavy industries.
Same done with power stations. This country sold down the river for the last 40 years
Absolute disgrace all them people being made redundant. And now having to import from India or China
Hi Paul, we’ve always imported raw materials such as iron ore from all over the world, and we will be importing steel substrates from Tata Steel in the Netherlands and India during the transition period. As soon as our electric arc furnace is up and running, we’ll be less reliant on other countries and recycling UK scrap.
If you honestly believe that's this is good for Wales you are a traitor and don't belong in the UK
@@TataSteelUK MMMM ! Think of this, if you can cope with steel made in India and Netherlands during transition........... why spend millions in the UK to build up a new plant , a plant that may not be able to compete with Chinese / Indian wage rates. I smell a rat. Its like knocking down a house to build a new one, but you already have a home elsewhere and don't need a new home. There is a lot of pride in Port talbot works, but that means nothing to a steel producer if its losing money.
The whole of europe and the US is exporting jobs to the far east.Soon we will have lovely clean air and green fields but no work or money.we will be living on the streets if this madness doesnt stop.....theres no future in greening everything.
Our lovely leaders got given lovely stacks of cash to look after them for moving it as it was upsetting foriegn completion as they couldn't compete fairly and nearly forgot they cuddle the stacks every night before bed.
Hi Paul, while the transition from blast furnace steelmaking to electric arc furnace technology does mean fewer people are required, this is also an opportunity to rebuild Port Talbot and the surround areas as a green hub. Many companies have registered interest in investing in the area and using our green steel once the transition is complete. This will lead to skilled jobs for the region.
I'm an ex chemical engineer. UK is a service economy (moving money) rather than industrial (making money). Our entire CO2 budget is less than some countries' annual increase. Our steelmaking is more efficient, safer, and cleaner. We'll never see industry like this again. Its why I'm an ex engineer, too hard to find work in the UK. I went into research and that dried up as we were seen as having the skills of the "bad old days"; funding moved to removing industry. I now work in an office. But i will never stop thinking like an engineer, a heavy burden when i see what is happening.
Tragic for Port Talbot and the UK
I can’t believe TATA steel has made a video about this…this isn’t something to be celebrated.ffs
The transition from blast furnace to electric arc furnace technology is a very important milestone. This is capturing history as it happens rather than celebrating.
@@TataSteelUK How many jobs directly and indirectly are being lost due to this change?
It is estimated approximately 2,500 jobs will be affected in the short term, with the ambition of maximising voluntary redundancies. But once the transformation is complete there is the potential for thousands of skilled jobs to return to the area through initiatives such as the Celtic Freeport. Find out more at www.greensteelfuture.com
Freeports have minimalnpositive effect. Freeporting is a statem where importers, our fireign trade rivals, can delay paying import tax until the point of sale. This aids the cashflow of foreign rival businesses. It is in no way the unilateral great benefit projected. Once again the political classes lie and manipulate.
As I understand it this means losing the ability to make new steel. Is this correct? That's a staggering national strategic capability to throw away.
Apparently a delegation from Port Talbot visited Scunthorpe, to see how they where decomissioning their Coke Ovens.
This is nothing to be proud of Tata Steel. nThis has cost billions over the years, now you shut it down. Over 3000 direct jobs gone and you don't give a toss. What is your next project to asset strip? Now this country does not make steel anymore. Shameful.
Not blaming TATA, not blaming Corus, not blaming British Steel, complete blaming Tory government. Once werld leaders, now not even competing. If you dont use it, you lose it. Construction, maintenance, research and development, knowledge will be mostly lost. Need special steel for anything Nuclear, Armed forces etc etc, you must hope to he able to procuur it somewhere, at extra cost and time.
You will own nothing and be happy.
Cheers for the vid, though, sad times.
What happened with the new BOS vessel? Has that been stopped?
There is currently a reline to extend the life of one of the vessels as we plan to make steel until September. Following that, there will be no need for BOS vessels in our future steelmaking operations.
@@TataSteelUK so have install of the new vessel been abandoned and you only have 1 vessel now? Because there was no follow up to the vessel replacement video.
Following the announcement, it didn't make business sense to invest in brand new BOS vessel. We have extended the life of both vessels with relines and will continue to use them until the closure of the heavy end.
@@TataSteelUK ahh! Thats fair enough! Did wonder!
All that gov overreach still exist even after the death of an industrial plant.
Makes you wonder how a company like Tata Steel can turn a profit.
:(
Iets buy everything from china 🤦♂️
