  • In recognition of your desire to learn more about the cities in England, we want to talk about Bradford. We will be talking about the city of Bradford rather than the metropolitan borough of Bradford. We are sure you already knew we are not talking about the Bradford in Ontario Canada, the one in New Zealand, and definitely not the one in Sierra Leone, Africa, and not one of many Bradfords in the US. As you take your mind back to England, please steer clear of Cornwall’s Bradford, the one in Devon, or that of Manchester. Then you can comprehend what we have to say about the city of West Yorkshire. In subdivision in the West Yorkshire Built-up Area, it’s second in size only to Leeds.
    Bradford Before Now
During the middle ages, what is now known as Bradford was a small town centered on Kirkgate, Westgate, and Ivegate. A fulling mill was mentioned in 1316 where all the manor corn was milled. Then King Edward IV allowed the observance of two annual fairs. From the moment he granted this, the town began to prosper. During the reign of Henry VIII, Bradford has grown to exceed Leeds as a manufacturing center. Bradford continued to grow, albeit slowly over the next two centuries as the wool trade increased in prominence.
The Civil War had its mark on the city. Bradford was garrisoned for the Parliamentarians. Royalist forces from Leeds launched an unsuccessful attack on the city in 1642. Of course, the effect of war brought a decline in the industry. But prosperity began to return in 1689 after the accession of William III and Mary II. However, it was the launch of manufacturing in the 18th century that marked the beginning of the town's development.
To appreciate the big role played by Industrial Revolution, Bradford was just a small rural market town of 6,393 people then. Only a handful of local cottages and farms were involved in wool spinning and cloth weaving. But by 1841, the population of Bradford has grown to 34,560. Bradford grew as an international center of textile manufacture and was known as the home of wool workers. Therefore, during the Industrial Revolution, it was a boomtown amongst the earliest industrialized settlements. This explains the city’s designations, the “wool capital of the world,” “Woolopolis,” and “Wool City.”
As textile manufacturing grew, Bradford took advantage of the area's access to coal, iron ore, and soft water to grow its manufacturing base. This led to an explosion in population and stimulated a civic investment. Many Victorian architectures are still listed, including the grand Italianate City Hall. In 1847, Bradford became a municipal borough, and in 1897, go its charter as a city. However, the 1974 local government reform reduced Bradford's city limits.
    Bradford’s Culture
Let us talk about the city’s culture. Bradford has a rich heritage in film and TV productions. Several of these have been shot and produced there. Besides, it’s prominent in the culture of music and cuisine in addition to museums and art galleries. There’s more to all these.
    Museums and art galleries
Prominent among the museums and art galleries in Bradford is the National Science and Media Museum which celebrates cinema and movies. This museum which is the most visited museum outside London was previously known as the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television). Bradford Industrial Museum, established in 1974 is also there at Moorside Mills, where Bradford’s industrial past significant achievements including textiles, printing, and spinning mills in Eccleshill are explained. We have to mention also Bolling Hall, Cartwright Hall in Lister Park, Bradford Museums & Galleries, and Impression Galleries among others. I live in Leeds and work in Bradford, one of the more notable aspects of Bradford is the shocking standard of driving you will see if visiting by car, I drive in most days and it's like a live action version of Wacky Races.

I live here in Bradford and I hate it with a passion! There is nothing here but hills and crime and it has fell behind as the rest of the uk has evolved.
Anybody wanting to visit, I suggest literally anywhere else in the uk.

I was born and brought up in this city and lived most of my life there. It don't think it is any better or worse than most other such cities. I'm not ashamed of the place but I'm not exactly proud of it either. You forgot to mention Black Lace. Bradford is mentioned in the Domesday Book so the history goes back a bit further. The standard of driving (uninsured drivers are a problem) and the condition of the roads are as terrible as ever.

Bradford is not a nice place for young women.
Cat calling, leering, staring and harassment is something that happened to me and my friends a lot. Men in Bradford more than any other place I have lived or visited in kinda feel entitled to women, partciularly women like me. Its a serious problem.

Don't be so pedantic! It's due to the immigrants who were invited by the government, after the 2nd world war, that helped build Bradford and other industrial cities. Whilst your grandparents refused to take on "dirty" jobs, the immigrant community did those grafting jobs in the mills. Please educate yourself and stop being a silly girl.
