This movie is pretty good for that coming of age genre, but it's just not my cup of tea. I see the art, I get the Wes Anderson signatures and vibes, but the story is a bit too juvenile for my taste... Next up, Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou!

    Sam is an awesome character.
At first glance you think of him as the typical “adorkable loser” like in many other movies and tv shows.
Yeah sure he’s short, wears glasses, is intelligent, and an outcast. But he’s also confident, tough, mature, can talk to girls, smokes a pipe, and holds a freakin’ gun.
If that’s not a broken stereotype, I don’t know what is!

  • @JoeFF85

In regards to the beach scene with the kiss... I think a lot of films would shy away from this because many filmmakers wouldn’t have been able to depict intimacy without also sexualizing things. Susie and Sam has an intimate moment there, and discussed mature themes without getting profanely sexualized

It came off so sweet. His characters all have this feeling to me, child and adult alike, as if we're watching young kids play pretend together. They deliver lines that sound like a child's idea of what a dramatic adult would say. Its almost like we're watching one of Max's plays from Rushmore.

My favorite is Fantastic Mr. Fox because it combines Wes Anderson's style, Roahl Dahl's story and stop motion animation

Yeah, as much as I love almost all of Wes' films, I really love 'Fantastic Mr. Fox', and also liked 'Isle of Dogs' a lot. Being a big fan of stop motion, seeing Wes' style created with stop motion is magic. And I love how the actors didn't just go to a studio to do the voice work. They went out in fields and ran and acted out the scenes (be sure to watch the BTS videos on this after you've seen the movies). As for Wes' live action work, I've started calling him the whimsical Stanley Kubrick. Their camera framing and use of symmetry are really similar, but Wes definitely has more joy in most of his films.

Moonrise Kingdom is hands down my favorite Wes Anderson film and one of my favorite films of all time. I saw it in theaters with my boyfriend at the time and the ending made me sob because I realized I was in love with my best friend. Not long after my boyfriend and I broke up, my best friend and I got together, and now we’ve been married for almost 6 years and I couldn’t be happier. We were met with a lot of adversity at the beginning of our courtship and Suzy’s line, “We’re in love, we just want to be together. What’s wrong with that?” was far too relatable. My Husband is my Sam and I’m his Suzy and our ultimate dream is to escape into the wilderness together forever.

I would say that THIS is my favorite Wes Anderson film, and for a very personal reason: most of the music is by my favorite composer Benjamin Britten, and I never expected to hear his wonderful music used to score a movie! We heard bits of his songs, a piece for string orchestra, choruses from two of his operas... and a central point in the story was his opera for community performance in a church, Noah's Flood. Just masterfully used, and Anderson has said that Britten's music inspired much of the movie. It makes me very happy.

this is the most adorable film about adolescence I have ever seen. We thought we knew so much at this age. Adulthood is not fun at all , what we didn't know was how fleeting this experience can be. It goes by fast and it goes by unobtrusively. Be a child while you are a child as long as it is mindfully appropriate. Being an adult sucks but it is what we got now

Wes Anderson was still growing into his own with his first two films: Bottle Rocket and Rushmore. Both are great but have beem overshadowed by his later more stylized films, but they shouldn't be ignored. It's hard to pick a favorite of his because each one deals with different subjects.

My favorite frame/shot from the movie I think are the long zoom outs like on the title card and through the stained glass window in the church. After Grand Budapest Hotel and Moonrise Kingdom my next two favorites that I’ve seen are The Royal Tenenbaums and Fantastic Mr. Fox but one of my favorite things about Wes Anderson is that much like Tarantino if you ask anybody to order the movies and it will be different which I think is a real testament to their consistency.

God, I love his movies so much! They work on so many levels, but the most brilliant thing about his work is the fact that despite (or because of?) its highly artificial look and feel, the detachment and stiffness of the characters and even the unnatural dialogue, it manages to hit you way deeper than the usually less subtle in-your-face approach of other filmmakers.
I think the 'dollhouse' image you keep mentioning is a rather spot-on observation; another reviewer likened the movies to children‘s pop-up books coming alive... So I suppose, that at least sort of explains their magic: We feel like a kid again, watching another kid perform a story with characters in a dollhouse... or reading a vividly illustrated book that looks like it’s made for children but is actually aimed at adults.

James, thank you so much for not just your reaction and your wonderful commentary. This film has been a secret delight of mine since its release. It is entirely sweet, beautiful, quirky and nostalgic in a way that is difficult to articulate. I'm not a formal student of the cinema but somehow this movie makes me want to watch "Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison" and "Father Goose". I don't know why. Oh my, I just flashed on how much I absolutely believe Bob Mitchum is, I think, one of the most underrated actors of all time. He deserves a place in the pantheon of cinema gods. The funny thing is, he considered acting to be a job he was fairly good at, enjoyed doing then went home and actually led a fairly sedate life despite all the lurid stories about him. I have always admired his indifference to fame. He never understood it. He thought hero worship belonged to the people that made a real difference: parents, doctors, engineers, clergy, teachers, military, fireman, police men and those who work the truly less than glamorous jobs that are vital to a functioning society. Drat! I have done it again and have digressed egregiously from your heartfelt reaction. Bravo to you sir for your fine review and apologies from myself.

James - loving your content. Wes Anderson is one of my favorite directions, and I think you'd like his earlier work as well. The Royal Tenanbaums is my favorite of his films, I'd love to see what you think of it. Keep up the awesome work!

Personal Wes Anderson favorites are: 1) Bottle Rocket, it’s his first and most unpolished and raw. Feels like a student film, but you can see the style he’s known for begin to develop. And 2) Life Aquatic, mostly because it was the first I ever saw of his, but also I love the Mediterranean vibe/colors/locations and the music is just perfect.

Ah, the glorious music of Benjamin Britten. never have I heard his music used so sympathetically. .... the opera that the children are performing in "Noye's Fludde" . Britten used mediaeval text for his music ... the beautiful song for boy's choir at the end, is one of his "Songs For Friday Afternoon".
It also takes childhood infatuations seriously, which, to the kids themselves, it certainly is.
Many A-list actors would kill, even for a cameo, in an Anderson film. They keep coming back for more.

Rushmore is his second film and it isn't at the same style as his films are now. Yet it is my favorite one and it not only launched the career of Jason Schwartzman but it also brought Bill Murray's serious acting talent to a new light. I would recommend having a look into that one.

Love this movie so much!! And all of his films, since the beginning 20 years ago. Very hard to pick just one favorite so here's a couple I love the most. Check them out if you haven't already and get the chance (Two of them you've already reviewed): The Royal Tennenbaums, Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Rushmore. Don't think he's ever made a "bad" film though. Style to spare especially in the way his films are shot, tons of quirky originality, unique sensibility, great wit and excellent & surprising screenwriting, terrific casting and excellent performances are quintessential Wes Anderson; its what he's known for and he always delivers. You have to check out Rushmore next. Very early film of his and the one that really showcased his extraordinary talent and originality to the world for the first time. Jason Schwartzman and Bill Murray just knock it out of the park.

my favorite is Fantastic Mr. Fox, because it was made with stop motion AND the actors actually went into different locations to provide the voice of the characters (I remember seeing George Clooney rolling on the ground while dubbing the character).

Well, my favorite Wes Anderson is this one. As for why, it just feels like every WA element executed perfectly - the quirkiness, the intricate story, the layered characters. It succeeds on creating a mood, it includes humor and darkness and magical realism and many, many left turns. At the same time, I appreciate the fact that it's not frantic - there are a lot of long, quiet moments where the story is allowed to breathe and pull you in. Or, short answer: when you perfectly balance everything Wes Anderson can do you get Moonrise Kingdom. :)

I mentioned in your Grand Budapest Hotel video that my two favorite Wes Anderson films are The Darjeeling Limited and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, with an honorable mention of The Royal Tenenbaums. I'll explain why here. For The Darjeeling Limited it's all about the characters. The three main characters remind me SO much of myself and my brothers. It also has a wonderful story built around those characters. As far as The Life Aquatic goes, that movie hits in such an emotional way I just can't really explain it. The world is also beautiful in The Life Aquatic. The Royal Tenenbaums... Well, that was the first Wes Anderson movie I watched. My older brother sat me down to watch it and I immediately expected to be completely uninterested in it. I was 13. I couldn't have been more wrong. It's another one that hits on so many emotions. I feel like Wes Anderson is one of the few people that has the ability to directly express thought and emotion through film. It's just a gift he has.

Alright mate, recently discovered your channel and instantly subscribed. I love the variety of films you’re doing reactions for, I saw in your Grand Budapest Hotel video you mentioned you’d like to see Wes Anderson’s storyboards. I’m not too sure if you are aware of the company Criterion, they release films on DVD & Blu-Ray with the best picture and audio quality possible but they are really in a league of their own with special features. If you get the Criterion of Moonrise Kingdom, it shows you the storyboard animated. It’s quite remarkable to see Wes envisioned everything in his head and how things didn’t just happen by chance but is meticulously thought out and planned.

This is my favorite, just the 60s aesthetic mixed with the Boy Scout troop, I can’t get enough. The number one factor of Wes Henderson movies is that the character seem to know precisely what they’re doing to the highest proficiency. Even the sets suggest that the world is orderly and rich. It’s like he took a kids pop-up book and made it into a film. example the fact that there actually is a school bus bus stop alcove in front of the main house is pretty bizarre. Only someone who overthink everyone’s needs and wants could have made this movie.

If you haven't seen it already, it would be nice if you reacted to Shoplifters (2018) by Hirokazu Koreeda.
It's a Japanese film about a family of outcasts who do odd jobs to make ends meet. As someone that seldom cries in movies, this one made me bawl my eyes out and is one of my favorite of the 2010s.
    Also, great video.

The end commentary about love shows total understanding of what Wes Anderson was trying to convey. Sam and Suzy have a deeper love than shown in most romantic comedies or erotic thrillers. Their more intimate moments on the beach may have engendered some controversy, but they aren't being sexualised - in fact, Suzy has a line to her mother that describes their relationship best: "We're in love, we just want to be together," and that is borne out by the later scenes (especially the closing scene) in which they are happy just spending time in each others' company. So, what happens between them at the centre of the story is more of an awakening of feelings - erotic ones, yes, but also purely emotional ones, understanding, freedom, maturity, sensitivity to each other amidst lives that have been senseless and devoid of love from those close to them. It's also worth noting that their love is fresh and meaningful, while that of the adults is dysfunctional and stale. Much of the soundtrack uses music by Benjamin Britten; his song "O Waly Waly" isn't included, but it contains the words "Love's a jewel while it is new, but when love is old it growth cold" - this movie bears that out amazingly well. And perhaps that's where it triggers nostalgia, even for things we might not have been through ourselves: we all miss being young, feeling young, enjoying the simple things that made us happy when we were young. This movie lays them out in front of us and lets us see and feel them. It's so sad when it's over.
