What the Luftwaffe did to Portsmouth was iniquitous, but it was nothing like as wicked as what Portsmouth City Council have perpetrated over the years! The Council was known to be, and for all I know, still is, the most corrupt of its kind in the UK. North End was a prosperous and civilised part of the city in the 1950s. The architecture was agreeable, and I well remember Belmont's and Will Brown's, McIlroy's and The Chocolate King on the corner. There was a fabulously stocked hardware store, lovely shoeshops, an art shop and TWO bookshops! All gone long since. They say, 'never go back'. They're right.
Thanks for the memories. I’ve not been back for many years, but what you have shown is the most REVOLTING , same as same as brick buildings that have replaced proper architecture, or just filled in space. Such a shame, and SO unattractive.
What happened to Commercial Road? My late grandparents ran a grocers down there in the 60s called Shop N Save and I spent many an evening there stock taking & shelf filling, they used to live down St Davids Road
Video should be called "How to ruin an entire shopping area when Portsmouth City Council have anything to do with it". I remember so vividly being taken to North End as a kid by my mum on the bus from Cosham. Looking at it now it breaks my heart at what those council idiots have done. Like Fratton it's going downhill so fast I doubt if English will be the spoken language in 25 years time?
I moved away from North End in 2021, don't miss the place one bit. And yeah looking at the old photos it makes me sad how neglected the place has become.
Great pictures. Does anybody have any pics of the Gaumont when it was a thriving cinema. I remember Saturday morning picture club and walking down the long entrance to the ticket booth.

Regent when I went there.
How things move so quick, the first 'now' image already changed as the brick building is now a glass Lidl store.
Yep,the now is most unappealing
The place used to have character. Not anymore, it looks awful now! The whole place needs some attention!
