When it comes to pure flamenco, Sabicas still has the edge over Paco and any other player. That being said, Paco took technique and versatility within the flamenco genre to the max.
Sabicas will always be considered the greatest flamenco guitarist who ever lived....Paco de Lucia had a greater technique, but Sabicas had what Chopin had over Liszt as a composer: an ability to compose flamenco guitar music that was fully developed and extremely poetic....
I met Sabicas on several occasions, and enjoyed talking to him. He encouraged me a great deal. To me, his technique was the cleanest of any guitarist. Playing solo flamenco guitar is not like playing for a dancer. His playing was outstanding for either form.
@gary morris ..but none of them are sabicas so whats your point your making. no one took sabicas legacy there very diffrent artists that play flamenco.
@gary morris-- I am 73 years old and started playing flamenco guitar at age 15....My teachers were the great Mario Escudero and Professor Juan de la Mata who was best friends with Sabicas, as was Mario......My career was put to an end at age 49 when I developed a hand condition known as "focal dystonia," which causes your playing hand to cramp up whenever you begin to play......You left out Grisha Goryachev as one of the present day great flamenco guitar players, who I consider the greatest Paco de Lucia interpreter with a technique almost equal to Paco's....However, without Ramon Montoya, Carlos Montoya, Mario Escudero and Sabicas, the present flamenco guitarists would be without their example as to what constitutes pure flamenco guitar music......It is like being a classical pianist without the music of Chopin and Liszt...You would be hard pressed to find classical music to play that was as emotional and complex and exciting....Sabicas is to us old players just that. Without his compositions to play, one would be left with mediocre and under developed flamenco guitar music until Paco de Lucia came to the attention of the flamenco world....I was able to play Sabicas' music, but Paco's music demands a flawless technique to play, which Grisha Goryachev seems to have no difficulty in playing.......
Sabicas easily always had the best and my favorite seguiriyas
¡Gran Maestro!
