You then see a drop down for selection filter. Next along is the selection scope. To pick geometry outside of the sketch you need to select the appropriate option here, choose 'Entire Assembly' or 'Within Work Part Only'. Dialog memory will save this setting as you continue. Consider familiarizing yourself with the NX UI as it is consistent across NX

Change the setting of selection scope from active sketch to work part or entire assembly depending on your requirements
