Now, I made a little change today - I've oriented my mobile antenna differently because I opened the hatchback on my car. This got me thinking: could this change affect my SWR? With the help of an SWR meter and even the radio's built-in SWR meter, we can figure out if the antenna is resonating as it should.

Its radio, it's never a guarantee. I've got a buddy in SD and we try once a week to connect, sometimes it works.. neither of us use big beams or amps.. barefoot and wires.. 73.

Do you ever use wstjx or js8call with your 857d? I tried for the first time the other day, and had luck receiving, but no luck transmitting. I use the digirig to interface with the pc. I tried your suggested settings for digital, but I'm wondering where I'm going wrong.

I have, and had some luck. There can be many things go wrong with it. For me it had a lot to do with how loud the audio was coming out to the computer and also the settings on wstjx. I have the same setup, Digirig, best interface you can get.

I’m using the car Antenna , and right next to my car. But you might be right.
