It's nice to hear mistakes. I think when I record myself I want too much perfection. sometimes your finger mutes a note a little early, and after realising I never noticed it listening to this song a million times it's making wonder if I need to relax when listening to my own guitar playing on solo.
The track will never be heard with the guitar solo'd. Well, not unless you're the guitarist of RHCP. So, whatever sounds good in the mix, IS good. Trust your ears.

@@danwhythough I have that problem as well. It's useful to sometimes listen to the individual tracks. But instead of solo:ing a channel, a great tip is to put a 6dB gain on the channel of interest instead so that you hear it clearly but don't completely mute all other channels. :)
That was fun to just jam on the bass to. For me it helped get into the head of the song, to see the relationship up close between the guitar and bass elements. For the chorus I was really taken away with how it opens up, I appreciate chord recognition/relation a lot better now. Something I will work on in my own writing. I think it was Picasso who said it took him 10 years to learn to paint like a master and a lifetime to paint like a child. I think it’s the same here, the missed or dull notes are all rhythm based to keep up with Flea and Chad. A teacher would wince at the imperfections but a master would appreciate the self expression.
Even after jumpin, blasting and wrecking shit to that song for 18 YEARS i still can't listen to this guitar track without nodding and making the "Stank Face" 😖 And when you add the other elements (the rest of the band) it's just straight up too magical song. It was hard for me in the beggining but I've got it fine now. Just keep practising with the muting of the strings. Try to avoid playing the first two strings at all, that way even if they're not completely muted you still won't hear them. But yeah, practice. It's so fun once you've got it.

I have fairly large hands so maybe the technique is a lot harder to most people but still I'm sure more people are motivated by the flaws as someone they look up too isnt always perfect and gives them motivation as you don't gotta be the most technically proficient guitar player to be a amazing guitarist
Jimi Hendrix did all of Frusciante's techniques first and better. So did Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page, and John Mayer, cause Hendrix is the man.

When you hear him by himself you can hear how his guitar playing isn't as good as someone like Prince or Jimi Hendrix. You can hear each individual note if he hits a wrong one. And that's what I love about John Frusciante.
Playing clean and playing good aren't the same thing. John's messy Playing is clearly a stylistic choice. It's part of what makes rhcp songs funky and special
Yeah, this particular way of playing in the verses, strumming most or all of the strings while only letting one sound at a time, is really messy and hard to pull off at all cleanly. It's a passionate percussive shambles, and I love it! But he can shred with some of the best, he's actually incredibly technically skilled, he just has decided to play this way cuz its more musical and interesting.
Do this with most guitar tracks on that were recorded on tape and I'm sure you'll find the same thing. We like to think of a piece of music as finished or clean or perfect when it has been on the radio a million times, but breaking down tracks like this will reveal so much. That's what makes rock so good. Its human.

It's not about it getting buried in mixing, he probably did it live in one take to capture the groove instead of it sounding too stiff and robotic.
